Volume 1 Chapter 1 — Sparks in the Quiet Countryside

Return of the Drift King 1 of 6

The afternoon rain poured over the corrugated tin roof of Walker’s Garage, filling the quiet Oak Ridge countryside with a steady, soothing rhythm. Inside the wide, dust-speckled bay, the air smelled rich of aged motor oil, ozone, and fresh pine needles from the surrounding mountain forest.

Chase Walker stood beneath the raised chassis of a vintage agricultural tractor, his tall frame clad in a worn denim work shirt with the sleeves rolled past his forearms. His calloused fingers moved with effortless precision, adjusting a complex fuel-injection valve without looking. To the local farmers who frequented the shop, Chase was simply a quiet, polite mechanic who had moved to Oak Ridge five years ago, keeping his past locked behind a calm, enigmatic smile.

None of them knew that behind those dark, steady eyes lay the instincts of the legendary “Drift King”—the youngest racing driver in history to dominate the European and Asian underground circuits before vanishing without a trace.

Suddenly, a deep, rhythmic thrum echoed from the narrow country road. It was not the clatter of a local pickup truck, but the sophisticated, twin-turbo V12 hum of a ultra-luxury vehicle.

A midnight-black Maybach coasted into the gravel driveway, its high-sheen paint gleaming despite the heavy downpour. Smoke rose gently from beneath the front hood as the engine sputtered once and died.

Chase wiped his oil-stained hands on a dark shop rag and stepped toward the open bay doors.

The rear passenger door swung open. A valet umbrella snapped open first, followed by a woman stepping onto the wet gravel. She wore an impeccably tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her dark hair styled in sharp, elegant waves around a face of striking, regal beauty.

It was Elena Vane.

Chase froze for a fraction of a second, his grip tightening imperceptibly on the rag. It had been five long years since he had last seen his estranged wife—the CEO of Vane Dynamics and one of the most powerful women in Apex Metropolis.

Elena looked around the rustic repair shop, her crystalline gaze eventually settling on Chase. For a brief moment, surprise flickered in her eyes, quickly replaced by her signature executive composure.

“Chase,” Elena said smoothly, her voice crisp and melodious against the patter of the rain. “I didn’t expect to find you here.”

“And I didn’t expect a Maybach to break down in Oak Ridge, Elena,” Chase replied calmly, his voice low and steady. “What brings the head of Vane Dynamics fifty miles outside the city?”

Beside Elena, a young male assistant in a sharp suit checked his smartwatch nervously. “Miss Vane, we only have three hours before the emergency board meeting with Cross Motors. If Victor Cross buys out the regional logistics shares while we’re stranded…”

Elena raised a slender hand, silencing the assistant. She turned back to Chase. “The cooling line fractured on the mountain pass. Can you fix it?”

Chase walked over to the steaming vehicle, popping the hood latch. His sharp eyes scanned the high-tech engine bay, immediately identifying the custom carbon-composite bypass line that had failed.

“It’s a custom prototype bypass,” Chase observed, pulling a tool tray over. “Most mechanics in City A would need three days to source the part.”

“And you?” Elena asked, watching him closely.

Chase picked up a high-grade titanium fitting and a heavy-duty silicone pressure hose. “Give me fifteen minutes.”

As Chase went to work, his movements were a masterclass in mechanical execution. Every twist of the wrench was smooth, exact, and impossibly fast. Elena watched in silent amazement. She had known Chase as her quiet, distant husband during their brief marriage before his sudden disappearance, but she had never witnessed him in his element.

“You haven’t changed, Chase,” Elena murmured softly as he secured the final bolt. “Still quiet. Still keeping secrets.”

Chase looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “Neither have the wolves chasing you, Elena. I hear Victor Cross is trying to take your father’s company.”

Elena’s jaw tightened slightly. “Vane Dynamics will not fall to a thug like Victor.”

“Victor isn’t just a corporate predator,” Chase said, wiping his hands clean and handing her the keys. “He runs the Midnight Drift League. If he’s targeting your company, he won’t stop at boardrooms.”

Elena stared at him, startled by his sudden insight into Apex Metropolis’s underground world. Before she could ask, Chase closed the hood with a solid thud.

“Your car is ready, Elena,” Chase said gently. “Don’t let them push you around.”

Elena took the keys, her fingers lingering against his warm palm for a brief, electric moment. “Thank you, Chase.”

As the Maybach glided out of the driveway and disappeared down the winding mountain road, Chase turned back to the dark corner of his garage. He pulled aside a heavy canvas tarpaulin, revealing the gleaming matte-black chassis of a twin-turbo GT coupe—a machine he hadn’t driven in five years.

“It’s time,” Chase whispered to the silent room.
