Chapter 6: The Sovereign Coronation and The Horizon’s Threat

Pregnant with the Dragon Lord’s Last Heir 6 of 6

The private sanctum of King Kael Drakon was a sanctuary of profound quiet, a stark contrast to the impending chaos beyond the citadel walls. Heated black marble floors radiated a soothing warmth, and the heavy silver-fox furs draped over velvet couches caught the gentle light of the hearth fire. Layla Thorne sat upon the settee, dressed in a simple silver silk shift. Beside her, nestled in a padded nest of crimson dragon-scales, Prince Aeris slept soundly. The tiny golden hatchling let out soft, rhythmic purrs, blowing perfectly formed golden smoke rings that dissipated against the dark wooden beams of the ceiling.

Kael knelt on one knee before Layla. He had stripped away his heavy battle-plate, wearing only loose linen trousers and a soft tunic. In his massive, battle-hardened hands, he held a small porcelain jar of golden dragon-salve. The contrast was striking—the terrifying sovereign warrior applying the fragrant, warm ointment to Layla’s frostbitten fingers with a reverence bordering on religious devotion.

He gently pushed back the sleeve of her gown, his thumb tracing the faded burn mark on her shoulder. He leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the healed skin. “The memory of your touch,” Kael murmured, his voice thick with unshielded emotion, “was the only anchor I had. For ten months, the Pyro-Blight dragged me toward madness. But I remembered the starlight. I remembered you.”

Layla’s hand lifted, her fingers brushing the faint golden scales along his strong jawline. “I was terrified,” she confessed softly, her eyes meeting his. “In the slums, holding a dragon’s egg… I didn’t know if the King of Ignis would kill me for daring to claim his child, or if the nobles would hunt me down. I didn’t know if you would accept a mortal mother.”

Kael closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. “I vow before the First Flame,” he swore, his words a binding oath in the quiet room. “As long as breath remains in my lungs, neither you nor Aeris will ever know cold, hunger, or fear again. You are my world, Layla.”

A heavy, respectful knock on the oak door broke the tender silence. High Priest Vane’s voice carried through the wood. “My King, My Queen. The nobility and the clan chiefs have assembled. The coronation awaits.”

Kael opened his eyes, the fierce sovereign returning. He stood, effortlessly lifting Layla to her feet. With practiced care, he settled Prince Aeris into a woven gold-silk sling against Layla’s chest. “It is time they swear true fealty,” Kael said.

Moments later, the colossal bronze doors of the Great Throne Room swung open. The blast of molten bronze trumpets heralded their arrival. The room was breathtaking—vaulted arches of black volcanic glass soared overhead, draped with hundred-foot banners of the Golden Dawnfang. Thousands of floating lumen-lanterns cast a brilliant, warm glow over the assembled high lords and priestesses.

Layla strode beside Kael down the scarlet carpet. She wore a majestic gown of midnight velvet, lined with star-gold thread that shimmered with every step. Prince Aeris rested comfortably against her chest, a living jewel of immense power. The nobles parted, bowing deeply in synchronized reverence.

At the high altar, Vane approached, carrying a velvet cushion. Resting upon it was the Diadem of Embers—an ancient crown forged of star-gold and burning heart-rubies.

Kael took the heavy crown in his hands. He turned to Layla, his expression one of profound pride. Before the entire ruling aristocracy, he gently lowered the Diadem onto her midnight hair. Instantly, the rubies flared, resonating with her latent starlight aura. A halo of dawn-light washed over her face, radiant and undeniable.

Kael drew his greatsword, driving the tip into the obsidian floor with a resounding crash. “I declare Layla Thorne the consecrated Sovereign Dragon Queen of Ignis!” he roared, his voice echoing to the rafters. “Co-Ruler of the Realm, and Mother of the Dragon Clan!”

Led by Vane and the surviving loyalist nobles, every high lord, general, and soldier in the room dropped to one knee. The synchronized clatter of armor was thunderous. Layla lifted her chin, her voice carrying clear and strong. “Together, we will build a kingdom where no child suffers in the cold, and no shadow can extinguish our flame.”

The celebration spilled out onto the Grand Imperial Balcony high above the caldera of Mount Pyre. Tens of thousands of citizens—dragonkin and mortals alike—waved lanterns and lit bonfires across the city plazas. Golden sparks floated upward into the twilight sky like ascending fireflies.

Kael stood beside Layla on the balcony, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. She leaned against his side, exhausted but deeply content. The kingdom was united. Their child was safe.

But as the cheers echoed below, a subtle, unnatural vibration rattled the stone balustrade.

Prince Aeris suddenly perked his ears, letting out a sharp, cautious hiss.

Layla followed the hatchling’s gaze. Far past the northern mountains, the twilight sky was shifting. The familiar stars were blotted out by a sickly, creeping violet aurora. A pulse of necrotic frost ripped through the distant air, a silent shockwave that made the very atmosphere feel brittle.

Kael’s golden eyes narrowed into slits. The dragon-veins beneath the earth trembled with a cold, sickening dread. “The miracle of the golden heir,” Kael whispered, his jaw clenched tight. “It didn’t just save us. It acted as a beacon. The ancient ones in the Void have awakened to the threat.”

Layla reached out, covering Kael’s hand on the railing. Her starlight aura flared, intertwining with his dawn-fire, creating a localized barrier of sheer, unbreakable light.

A sudden gust of wind swept over the balcony. A single flake of violet, frozen ash drifted down from the sky. It landed directly on Kael’s star-iron vambrace. The metal hissed as the ash melted into a patch of corrosive black frost.

King Kael and Queen Layla stood side by side under the burning dragon banners, their eyes fixed on the expanding shadow in the north. The crown was secured, but the true war for survival had just begun.
