Chapter 3: The Crimson Interrogation

Pregnant with the Dragon Lord’s Last Heir 3 of 6

Deep within the subterranean dungeons of the Obsidian Citadel, the air was thick with the metallic tang of blood and the oppressive heat of magma vents. Chains rattled against enchanted black iron walls. Lady Seraphina was suspended by her wrists, her once-immaculate crimson silks torn and stained with soot. Her platinum braids hung in matted clumps over her face. She breathed in ragged gasps, her arrogant defiance stripped away, leaving only raw, shivering terror. Beside her, Duke Varian slumped against the far wall, his jaw bruised and his armor stripped, a pathetic shadow of his former aristocratic glory.

The heavy iron door groaned open. King Kael Drakon stepped into the cell. He wore no crown, only standard battle-leathers and a dark cloak, but his presence swallowed the scant light in the room. His golden eyes were devoid of mercy. Behind him stood High Priest Vane and Layla Thorne. Layla was no longer the soot-stained outcast; she wore a simple but elegant midnight-blue gown, her demeanor calm and unyielding.

Kael stepped closer to Seraphina. He did not shout. He did not draw a weapon. He merely let his draconic aura bleed into the room—a crushing, physical weight that made it impossible for Seraphina to draw a full breath.

“The sulfurous egg,” Kael said, his voice a low, lethal hum that vibrated in the prisoner’s bones. “Who engineered the forgery? And how did you know the exact resonance of the First Flame?”

Seraphina spat blood onto the floor, a hysterical, broken laugh escaping her lips. “You think… you think a mortal whore can save your cursed bloodline? Ignis belongs to the noble houses. We are the true dragons!”

Kael’s hand shot out, wrapping around her throat. He didn’t squeeze; the terrifying heat of his skin was enough. The faint golden scales on his wrist flared with contained fury. “Aristocratic pride will not save you from the pyre, Seraphina. Speak the truth, or I will let the magma vents peel the flesh from your bones.”

Varian groaned from the corner, his voice cracking. “It was the Alchemists of the Iron Province! They… they promised us the egg would fool the Hearth! They said the Pyro-Blight was killing you, that the throne would be empty within the year!”

Kael released Seraphina, turning his piercing gaze onto the Duke. “The Iron Province has been abandoned for a century. Who orchestrated the contact?”

Before Varian could answer, a sickening, wet cough wracked Seraphina’s body. She convulsed violently against the chains. Black, necrotic veins suddenly spider-webbed up her neck, pulsing with an unnatural violet light. Her crimson eyes rolled back, dissolving into a milky, void-like emptiness.

“They… they are already here,” Seraphina choked out, her voice dropping an octave into a guttural, demonic double-tone. “The frozen dark. The void consumes the flame.”

High Priest Vane stepped forward, his opalescent eyes widening in horror. He raised the Staff of the First Flame, chanting a warding spell, but it was too late. Seraphina’s body seized one final time before going limp, the black veins receding rapidly into her flesh. She was dead.

Kael cursed, stepping back as a wave of unnatural cold swept through the dungeon, momentarily freezing the condensation on the iron bars. Layla crossed her arms, rubbing her shoulders against the sudden chill.

“Necromancy,” Vane whispered, his grip tightening on his staff. “A silence-hex bound to her soul. Whoever supplied the false egg ensured she could never reveal their true identity.”

Kael’s jaw clenched, his mind racing. The Iron Province. The dark alchemists. A silence-hex powerful enough to kill a highborn dragon. This was no mere political coup by greedy nobles. This was an orchestrated infiltration.

Layla stepped up beside Kael, her clear eyes analyzing the dead woman. “They wanted to place a sleeper agent on the throne,” she said quietly. “If Seraphina had been crowned Co-Regent, whoever controls that dark magic would have controlled the kingdom.”

Kael looked at Layla, a surge of respect cutting through his dark thoughts. Her mind was as sharp as dragon-steel. “And by bringing the true heir, you destroyed a plan decades in the making. They will not stop here.”

“Then we must find them first,” Layla replied without hesitation.

Kael turned back to the trembling Duke Varian. The man was weeping silently, terrified of the corpse hanging beside him. Kael drew his hunting dagger, pressing the flat of the blade against Varian’s cheek.

“You have one chance to keep your head attached to your shoulders, Varian,” Kael growled. “Where in the Iron Province did the exchange happen?”

“The… the Whispering Gorge,” Varian stammered, tears streaming down his bruised face. “An abandoned mining outpost. But we never saw their faces! They wore masks of black frost!”

Kael withdrew the blade, sheathing it with a sharp click. “Lock him in the deepest cell. Double the guard.” Kael turned to Layla and Vane. “The political crisis is averted, but the true war has just begun. We ride for the Whispering Gorge at dawn.”

Layla nodded, the starlight aura around her pulsing with quiet resolve. The shadows in the dungeon seemed to retreat as they walked out, leaving the cold, dead husk of treason behind.
