Chapter 2: The Starlight Revelation

Pregnant with the Dragon Lord’s Last Heir 2 of 6

The air in the High Dragon Temple froze, taut as a drawn bowstring. Layla Thorne stood motionless under the vaulted ceiling, the deadly dragon-steel spears leveled just inches from her throat. The heat of the golden egg against her chest was her only anchor. Surrounding her, the armored enforcers of House Varian tightened their grips, their eyes flashing with hostile intent. From the high dais, King Kael Drakon descended. His heavy armored boots struck the obsidian floor with the slow, terrifying rhythm of a war drum.

Kael’s golden eyes burned through the shadows, fixed entirely on Layla. The suffocating agony in his chest vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, protective resonance. He stopped before the enforcers, his towering draconic presence radiating a localized wave of crushing sovereign pressure. “Lower your weapons,” Kael commanded. The words were quiet, but they carried a kinetic force that rattled the nearest pillars.

Duke Varian stepped forward, his face flushed with panicked defiance. “My King, this mortal is a common thief! She brings a cursed illusion to mock our sacred rites. The guards must strike her down before—”

Kael did not even look at the Duke. His gauntleted hand lashed out, gripping the shaft of the closest spear. With a sickening crunch of metal, he snapped the six-foot dragon-steel weapon in half, tossing the broken pieces onto the stone. The enforcers stumbled back, their aggressive stance crumbling into stark terror.

“Any man who raises a blade against her,” Kael rumbled, his voice dripping with lethal intent, “will burn before they can draw their next breath.”

Kael stepped past the trembling guards, stopping a hand’s breadth from Layla. He looked down at her soot-stained face. The harsh temple lighting illuminated the exhaustion in her eyes, the bruises on her knuckles, and the sheer, unyielding defiance in her posture. Slowly, Kael removed his star-iron gauntlet, tossing it aside. His bare hand, marked by faint golden scales, reached out. He didn’t touch the egg; his fingers gently brushed the soot from Layla’s cheek.

“You,” Kael whispered, the word laced with two hundred years of desperate longing and ten months of maddening grief. “You came back.”

Layla met his gaze, her heart pounding against her ribs. The golden egg between them pulsed, emitting a warm, rhythmic chime that echoed Kael’s heartbeat. “I didn’t come for a crown, Your Grace,” she said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “I came because our child needs his father.”

A collective gasp echoed from the tiered galleries. The nobility murmured in chaotic disbelief. From the altar, Lady Seraphina’s face contorted into an ugly, desperate snarl. “Lies! Vile, filthy lies!” she shrieked, scrambling down the steps. She pointed furiously at the golden egg. “That is parlor magic! A hedge-witch’s trick meant to usurp my rightful place. I carry the true bloodline!”

High Priest Vane stepped forward, the Staff of the First Flame striking the stone floor with a commanding boom. “Then let the First Flame decide,” Vane declared, his opalescent bronze eyes locking onto Layla. “Step forward, mortal. Approach the Hearth of Eternity.”

Layla drew a deep breath. She stepped past the broken spears and the seething Seraphina, walking deliberately toward the central altar. The nobles leaned over the balconies, their breaths held in suspense. Kael walked beside her, an imposing shield of dark iron and coiled fury.

Reaching the sunken circular pit, Layla looked down at the dead, cold stones of the Hearth. The jagged runes, still tainted by the sulfurous residue of Seraphina’s fake egg, looked menacing. Slowly, Layla unwrapped the coarse burlap entirely, revealing the full, unblemished glory of the golden vessel. She reached out, carefully resting the egg on the central pedestal.

For a heartbeat, the temple was dead silent.

Then, the golden egg ignited.

A shockwave of pure, blinding solar light erupted from the altar. The jagged runes around the rim flared not with fire, but with a brilliant, liquid starlight. The light cascaded down the stone canals, vaporizing the toxic sulfur in an instant. The entire temple was bathed in a warm, resonant glow that smelled of dawn and blooming jasmine. The crystal-chimes grew louder, a cosmic harmony that vibrated through the very souls of every dragonkin present.

The golden shell began to fracture. A fine network of glowing cracks spread across the surface, emitting rays of intense sunlight. The nobles in the galleries fell to their knees, their draconic instincts overwhelming their political allegiances. The aura of the true royal heir was undeniable.

Seraphina stumbled back, clutching her head as the harmonic frequency pierced her ears. “No… no, it’s impossible!” she stammered, her arrogant facade melting into raw, pathetic terror. Duke Varian grabbed her arm, his face pale as ash, violently dragging her toward the heavy bronze doors.

“Guards,” Kael said, his voice cold as the void. “Seize them.”

Before Varian and Seraphina could take three steps, a dozen royal sentries surrounded them, driving them to the floor in a clatter of armor and frantic screams. Kael turned his back on the traitors, his attention entirely consumed by the altar.

The golden egg shattered. A tiny, flawless dragon hatchling, scales gleaming like freshly minted gold, tumbled onto the stone. The infant shook off the remaining shell fragments, unfurling delicate, translucent wings. It let out a high-pitched, melodic chirp, blowing a tiny ring of golden smoke.

Layla fell to her knees, tears cutting clean paths through the soot on her face. Kael knelt beside her. He reached out, his massive hands trembling, and gently scooped the hatchling from the altar. The baby dragon nuzzled against Kael’s thumb, purring fiercely.

Kael looked at Layla, a single tear escaping his golden eyes. He pressed his forehead against hers. “My Queen,” he whispered, a vow that reverberated into eternity.

As the royal sentries dragged the screaming Seraphina away, Kael stood, holding the golden heir high for the court to see. The temple erupted into deafening roars of absolute fealty.
