Chapter 5: The War Council and The Starlight Ward

Pregnant with the Dragon Lord’s Last Heir 5 of 6

The Great Map Room of the Obsidian Citadel was bathed in the harsh, tactical light of enchanted lumen-crystals. Spread across the massive black marble table was a topographical map of Ignis and the desolate northern borders. Dozens of high lords, generals, and clan chiefs stood around the table, their faces grim, their armor clinking restlessly. King Kael Drakon stood at the head of the table, his presence dominating the room. Beside him, Layla Thorne reviewed the translated pages of the alchemist’s ledger they had recovered from the Whispering Gorge.

“The Frost Horrors are not a myth,” Kael stated, his voice a commanding rumble that silenced the murmuring council. “For a thousand years, we believed they were locked in the Void. The ledger proves otherwise. The dark alchemists were their mortal heralds, preparing our realm for a vanguard assault.”

General Varo, a scarred veteran of the southern border wars, slammed his fist onto the table. “They strike from the shadows with poison and trickery! We march the entire Royal Army north. We burn the Iron Province to bedrock and glass every cavern they hide in!”

“A frontal assault into unknown territory against an enemy that wields necrotic magic is suicide, General,” Layla interjected calmly, her melodic voice cutting through the aggressive posturing. She stepped forward, placing a crystal marker on the northern mountain pass. “The ledger details their troop movements. They thrive on the cold, drawing power from the corrupted ley lines. If you march an army into their domain without magical shielding, your men will freeze from the inside out before they draw a single sword.”

Varo scoffed, crossing his massive arms. “And what does a mortal woman know of draconic warfare? We rely on our fire, not cowardice.”

Kael’s eyes flashed with instantaneous fury. The temperature in the room spiked ten degrees. “You speak to your Queen, Varo. Another tone like that, and I will remove your tongue.”

Varo paled, quickly bowing his head. “My apologies, Your Grace. My Queen.”

Layla didn’t flinch. She met Varo’s gaze evenly. “You rely on fire, General, but the alchemists engineered a dampening field. The sulfurous compounds they use can suffocate draconic flame. Your greatest weapon will be neutralized. We need a different approach.”

High Priest Vane leaned over the map, stroking his braided beard. “Queen Layla is correct. The corruption in the north is unnatural. To combat it, we need a counter-resonance. A ward of pure, uncorrupted magic.”

Layla touched the faint burn mark on her shoulder, feeling the phantom warmth of her starlight aura. “During the attack in the gorge, the necrotic magic didn’t touch me. The aura from Prince Aeris repelled it entirely. If we can amplify that frequency…”

“We can create a shield,” Kael finished, his strategic mind rapidly connecting the pieces. He looked at Vane. “The Great Prism of Dawnfang. It sits atop the central spire. Can it channel the starlight aura?”

“Theoretically,” Vane murmured, his opalescent eyes widening. “If Queen Layla channels her innate starlight, and the Golden Heir provides the draconic resonance, the Prism could broadcast a warding dome over the entire capital and the northern march. It would neutralize the necrotic frost and render the dampening fields useless.”

“Then we prepare the ritual,” Kael ordered, slamming his palm flat on the table. “Varo, mobilize the defensive lines at the northern pass. You will not march into the province. You will hold the chokepoint and let them break against our shields. Vane, prepare the central spire. We execute the ward at midnight.”

The generals snapped to attention, roaring their assent before rushing from the room to execute their orders. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Kael, Layla, and Vane alone in the map room.

Kael turned to Layla, the harsh sovereign mask softening into profound concern. He stepped close, his large hands resting gently on her shoulders. “Channeling the Prism will drain you, Layla. It is a staggering amount of magic to force through a mortal vessel. If you falter…”

“I won’t,” Layla said fiercely, looking up into his golden eyes. “Our son’s life, your life, the lives of everyone in this city depend on it. I survived the slums of the lower rings. I survived the assassins in the gorge. I can survive this.”

Kael pulled her into a tight, desperate embrace, burying his face in her dark hair. He inhaled the scent of jasmine and petrichor, centering his chaotic soul. “You are the strongest creature I have ever known,” he whispered.

“We are stronger together,” Layla replied, resting her head against his armored chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart.

A sharp, urgent knock interrupted them. A soot-covered scout stumbled into the room, gasping for breath. “My King… My Queen…” The scout collapsed to one knee. “The northern watchtowers have gone dark. The blizzard… it’s moving unnaturally fast. The vanguard of the Frost Horrors will reach the capital gates before midnight.”

Kael drew his greatsword, the metal shrieking against the scabbard. “The war is here,” he said grimly. He looked at Layla. “Go to the spire. Ignite the ward. I will hold the gates until you do.”

Layla nodded, her eyes fierce. “Do not die before I finish, Kael Drakon.”

Kael offered a lethal, terrifying smile. “I wouldn’t dare.”
