Chapter 6: The Echoes of Dawn

Never Open The Door At Midnight 6 of 6

The air inside the Old Chemistry Annex hung thick with gray magnesium soot, drying chemical residue, and cooling steam. Elena, Maya, Chloe, and the six surviving students maintained a silent, protective perimeter around the soapstone workbenches. The rhythmic, quiet breathing of nine exhausted survivors mingled with the settling creak of the 130-year-old roof timbers.

Elena checked the mercury wall barometer. The needle steadily climbed from 972 mb to 1005 mb as the nor’easter cyclone finally moved east toward the Atlantic.

“One thousand five millibars,” Maya said softly. “The pressure well is collapsing. Its hunting window is closed.”

Maya carefully applied silver sulfadiazine burn ointment to Elena’s blistered fingers, wrapping them in rough sterile gauze. The medicinal scent of burn salve mixed with lingering sulfur.

Chloe gently folded Tyler’s varsity jacket. She laid it on the counter and sat beside Elena in quiet, solemn acceptance. “He went out because I said I was cold. I’ll have to live with that. But thank you, Elena. You kept the rest of us alive.”

“We kept each other alive, Chloe,” Elena replied, her soot-streaked face reflecting the dim lantern light. “We held the door.”

At exactly 06:00 AM, the first rays of crisp golden sunlight broke over the granite crest of Blackwood Ridge. The light streamed through the shattered leaded window frame in the hallway, casting long blue shadows across the four-foot snowdrifts in the quadrangle. The ambient temperature held at negative eight degrees.

Elena’s scratched analog Timex wristwatch—frozen at 12:00 for the entire loop—suddenly emitted a sharp mechanical click. The gears re-engaged. Tick-tick-tick. It began ticking steadily forward.

“The clock is moving,” Elena whispered. “The loop is broken.”

A heavy, rumbling diesel roar echoed up Route 28A. Massive Ulster County rotary snowplows cut through the drifted mountain pass. A convoy of New York State Police 4WD SUVs and Ulster County Sheriff cruisers flooded the quadrangle with flashing red and blue strobe lights. Sirens echoed off the frozen mountain cliffs.

“Plows are in the circle,” Maya said, a deep exhale escaping her lungs. “State police just cleared the front gate. We made it, El.”

Paramedics swarmed the building, wrapping the nine survivors in silver mylar hypothermia blankets. The crinkling of mylar space blankets filled the crisp morning air as they escorted the students down the grand oak staircase. The smell of hot bitter coffee from first responder thermoses cut through the sharp winter pine scent.

State police investigators examined the charred floorboards of Room 220 and the deep scorched trail of organic fluid leading across the snow toward the ravine.

The Ulster County Sheriff approached Elena at the open rear doors of an ambulance. He handed her a plastic evidence pouch. Inside the pouch rested Marcus Hayes’s crushed aluminum Maglite and a frozen student identification card.

“You kids did a hell of a job holding that room,” the Sheriff said. “We found Officer Hayes’s flashlight five miles up the ridge road. We’re sending tactical search-and-rescue into the limestone ravines once the sun is full.”

Elena pulled the mylar blanket tight around her shoulders. “Check the deep caves. Don’t go in after dark.”

Emergency mobile cellular repeaters powered up across campus. Elena’s dead iPhone buzzed violently in her palm. Dozens of text notifications flooded the screen, followed immediately by a single new voicemail banner timestamped 06:12 AM. Eighteen minutes ago.

Elena pressed the phone to her ear and tapped play.

The clear, warm digital compression of Lily’s cheerful voicemail played through the speaker: “Hey Ellie! Chicago O’Hare completely shut down last night because of the blizzard—they cancelled every single outbound flight to New York! I never even got on a plane. I’m safe in my hotel eating room service blueberry pancakes. Call me when you wake up, love you!”

Elena lowered the phone. The blood drained from her face. Her throat locked, breath freezing in her lungs. The phone vibrated like a dead insect in her hand. Goosebumps rose under the foil blanket.

“She never left Chicago…” Elena breathed.

Lily was nine hundred miles away in Illinois all night. The voice that wept on the porch, begging by her childhood nickname, was not harvested last night. It was an echo from something far older that had been listening to her family for generations.

Elena stares across the glittering snowdrifts toward the jagged, black mouth of the Blackwood Ridge limestone caves. The paramedic steps up and closes the heavy rear doors of the ambulance with a solid thud. As the vehicle shifts into gear and begins rolling down the plowed mountain road, a faint, metallic draft catches on the alpine wind, whistling through the cracked ambulance window. It is the exact acoustic cadence of Elena’s own voice, whispering from the dark pines: “Look at me—eyes on me, not the door.”
