Chapter 2: The Midnight Threshold

Never Open The Door At Midnight 2 of 6

The heavy 4×4 reinforced timber drop-bar slammed into the forged iron brackets with a solid, echoing thud. Elena Vance stood in the ground-floor foyer, her breath condensing in thick white clouds under the high ceiling. The temperature had plummeted to forty degrees. Sub-zero drafts hissed under the massive double oak front doors like dry ice vapor.

On the wide oak staircase, twenty residents huddled in heavy parkas, illuminated by two battery-powered halogen work lamps and Elena’s tactical flashlight. Elena locked both industrial 3-inch brass deadbolts. She turned to face the terrified crowd, her bruised knuckles gripping the iron crowbar.

“Listen carefully,” Elena ordered. “The building is sealed. No doors open. No windows crack. Not for campus safety, not for friends, not for family. If someone is outside, they are already gone. Our only job is keeping this door locked until six in the morning.”

Chloe Adams stepped down to the lowest stair, her pastel sweater pulled tight over her flannel pajamas. She clutched her silver heart locket, her porcelain face flushed red. “Tyler has asthma, Elena! He’s out there in four-foot drifts! You’re locking him out to die just because you’re having some psychotic power trip!”

Maya Jenkins stood beside Elena, clipboard and stopwatch in hand. “Chloe, ambient temp is eighteen below with forty-mile wind chill. Biological survival time without specialized gear is under twenty minutes. Elena is keeping twenty people alive.”

Elena marched to the reception desk, unlocked the lockbox, and removed the backup brass master key. She shoved it deep into her cargo pants and zip-tied the key cabinet shut. No rogue breaches. The law of the threshold was absolute.

The grandfather clock in the stairwell ticked rhythmically. Its brass pendulum swung with heavy, indifferent momentum. At exactly 12:07 AM, it finished its twelve low, reverberating chimes. Silence fell over the room.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Three heavy, deliberate, rhythmic fist-strikes slammed against the exterior oak doors with concussive force. The leaded transom glass vibrated so violently that fine frost dust sifted down like powdered sugar onto the foyer floor.

Then, a young woman’s voice cried out from the shrieking blizzard. It was an exact, indistinguishable acoustic replica of eighteen-year-old Lily Vance.

“Elena! Ellie, please, unlock the door!” the voice screamed, shivering, gasping, weeping in desperate agony. “My cab went off Route 28A into the ravine! It’s so cold, Ellie, my feet are frozen!”

The crowd on the staircase erupted into frantic shouting. Two freshman girls began crying hysterically.

“Ellie! Please! I can see the flashlight through the glass!” the voice begged outside, capturing the precise, intimate, high-register crack in Lily’s voice during childhood panic. “Why aren’t you opening the door?! Ellie, it hurts, I can’t feel my hands!”

A varsity athlete shouted, “Elena, that’s your sister! Open the goddamn door! She’s freezing to death out there!”

Elena’s jaw tightened. “Nobody moves,” she commanded, stepping in front of the deadbolts. “Stay on the stairs. That is not Lily.”

Chloe broke from the staircase. She lunged with manic speed toward the heavy iron slide-bolt on the left door leaf. Elena reacted with athletic instinct, dropping her center of gravity and driving her shoulder directly into Chloe’s ribcage in a hard, low track tackle.

The bruising impact slammed both women onto the freezing linoleum floor. Maya threw herself over Chloe, pinning the thrashing girl’s limbs. The rough wool of Chloe’s sweater dragged across the cold tiles. Elena scrambled to her feet, blocking the deadbolt with her body and raising the iron crowbar.

She stepped to the freezing brass kickplate, leaning toward the door seam. “If you’re Lily, what did you break in the kitchen last Thanksgiving?”

Outside, a sudden, uncanny half-beat silence stretched across the sub-zero draft.

Then, the voice shrieked with synthetic desperation. “Ellie-bear, stop playing games! It’s me! I’m freezing to death, Ellie-bear!”

Elena turned back to the stunned room. “Lily hasn’t called me that in two years. She hated that name. Whatever is standing on that porch… it found an old recording.”

The moment Elena exposed the flaw, the crying instantly cut out. No tapering off, no biological exhale. An abrupt digital-like silence clamped over the threshold.

Without a pause, the acoustic timbre shifted. It became the husky, athletic baritone of nineteen-year-old Tyler Brooks, speaking directly into the bottom quarter-inch gap of the door. “Chloe? Peanut, please… my fingers are turning black… let me in, baby…”

Chloe froze mid-struggle beneath Maya. She collapsed against Maya’s chest, throwing her hands over her ears in hysterical agony.

“Tyler… oh god, Tyler…” Chloe sobbed.

Maya looked at her stopwatch. “Look at the sound envelope. There are no breath pauses. It’s speaking on an unbroken audio loop.”

Beneath the bottom edge of the door, four elongated, calcified talons slid through the weather-stripping gap. The black, needle-thin tips protruded a half-inch into the foyer, scraping violently against the brass threshold kickplate. The nails-on-chalkboard screech grated through the room, cutting deep grooves into the polished brass.

“Chloe… it’s so dark in the quad…” the voice of Tyler Brooks whispered from outside. “You told me to get the blankets, Chloe… why won’t you let Tyler inside?”

The obsidian talons tested the physical rigidity of the oak barrier. The 4×4 timber and heavy deadbolts held firm. The scratching stopped abruptly.

The violent scratching against the brass kickplate stops dead. A heavy, hollow silence descends over the foyer. Then, from the brick exterior wall directly above the foyer ceiling, comes a rapid, dry, spider-like skittering sound—the sharp click of talons digging into frozen mortar, racing straight up the ivy toward the upper dormitory windows.
