Chapter 4: The Shattered Latch

Never Open The Door At Midnight 4 of 6

The second-floor common restroom smelled of freezing porcelain and old copper. Chloe Adams retreated into the unheated room to wash the freezing tears from her face. White subway tiles reflected the beam of her dying flashlight. Along the baseboards, the cast-iron radiator pipes shuddered and clanked under the dying steam pressure.

She stood at the ceramic sink basin, shivering violently, her fingers fumbling with the clasp of the silver heart-shaped locket around her neck.

A low, hollow vibration hummed through the cast-iron radiator pipes. The metallic acoustic resonance echoed off the tiles, resolving slowly into the husky, breathless voice of Tyler Brooks.

“Chloe… Peanut, I know you’re in there… you’re holding the locket I gave you in Newport…”

Chloe gripped the edge of the freezing sink. The voice spoke with terrifying intimacy, the sound vibrating directly through the hollow cast iron.

“I can’t breathe without my inhaler, Chloe… The east fire door on three is blocked by snow… crack the lock, baby… save me…”

Tyler delivered four consecutive sentences without a single bronchial wheeze or pulmonary inhalation. It was a physical impossibility in sub-zero weather, especially for an asthmatic. But Chloe didn’t hear the impossibility. She only heard his desperate plea.

“Tyler?” Chloe whispered, fresh tears spilling down her face. “Oh god, you’re alive… I’m coming, Tyler! I’m coming!”

Down the hall in the second-floor lounge, nine students huddled under heavy wool blankets around the central table. Elena and Maya set up the battery-powered shortwave emergency radio, scanning the Ulster County emergency dispatch bands. Harsh, static-laced radio carrier waves filled the 34-degree air.

The speaker crackled to life.

“All Oakridge units, this is Hayes. Evacuate via third-floor east fire exit immediately. Transport is waiting. Code Alpha-7-Niner.”

The authoritative voice of Marcus Hayes repeated in a synthetic loop, seamlessly spliced with agonizing screams from Tyler Brooks.

Maya analyzed the transmission panel. “Signal strength is pegged at maximum. It’s not coming from Kingston dispatch—it’s transmitting from the roof eaves above us.”

Elena stood up quickly, sweeping her flashlight beam across the huddle of survivors. An empty wool blanket draped over Chloe’s chair. Elena turned toward the maintenance rack on the wall. A three-foot steel maintenance crowbar was missing from its hooks.

“Where is Chloe?” Elena demanded. “Where’s the crowbar?!”

Elena and Maya sprinted up the dark oak stairwell to the third floor, Elena’s voice hoarse from shouting orders in the sub-zero air. They hit the third-floor east wing corridor. Elena swung her flashlight beam down the long, narrow hallway.

At the far end, Chloe stood in front of the heavy solid oak East Fire Exit door. The heavy Master Lock padlock lay on the floorboards, its iron hasp fractured by the stolen crowbar. Chloe placed both hands against the red emergency panic bar.

“Chloe! Don’t touch the bar! GET AWAY FROM THE DOOR!” Elena screamed, sprinting down the hallway with outstretched arms.

“I’m sorry, Elena! I have to save him!” Chloe cried.

“NO!”

Chloe depressed the push-bar. The door flew outward with a concussive BANG as the heavy oak hit exterior brick.

A violent, concussive gust of -18°F blizzard wind blasted down the hallway at 70 mph. The sub-zero blast blew out all ambient lanterns instantly. Arctic air burned exposed skin like liquid nitrogen. Stinging ice crystals peppered Elena’s eyes. The pressure slammed Chloe violently backward onto the hardwood floor.

Across the open threshold stepped an eight-foot, ash-gray silhouette. Elongated, double-jointed limbs shifted with insectoid velocity. Needle-sharp obsidian talons clicked against the floorboards. The creature emitted a piercing, multi-tonal ultrasonic acoustic screech that vibrated teeth and inner ear bones, shattering the glass light fixtures along the hallway ceiling.

Two students emerged in panic from Room 312. The entity blurred forward, its talons splintering the oak doorframe in a terrifying explosion of violence.

Elena dove into the blizzard gale. She grabbed Chloe by her sweater collar and dragged her backward across the slick floorboards. The rough fabric choked Chloe’s throat.

Maya hurled the heavy ten-pound steel fire extinguisher directly at the predator’s head. The concussive impact clattered against masonry, momentarily staggering the beast.

“Move! Get down the stairs! GO!” Maya shouted.

Elena rallied the surviving students, herding them aggressively down the stairwell. “Everyone into Room 220! Move your feet! Into the lab NOW!”

Elena slams the heavy reinforced steel fire door of Room 220 shut and throws both industrial 3-inch deadbolts into the frame. The heavy steel plate seals the room in total darkness, broken only by the orange glow of a single kerosene wick. Outside in the unlit corridor, the heavy, deliberate footsteps of the predator stop directly against the steel door. From the other side of the three-inch steel plate comes the soft, trembling, unmistakable voice of Elena’s deceased mother: “Elena, sweetheart… open the latch for Mama. It’s so cold out here.”
