Chapter 5: The Chemical Crucible
The temperature inside the Old Chemistry Annex dropped to twenty-eight degrees. Elena, Maya, Chloe, and the six surviving students secured Room 220, sliding the heavy top and bottom industrial deadbolts into the reinforced steel frame. Frigid, smooth black soapstone counters glinted with sub-zero frost.
Two international students began shivering uncontrollably, showing early signs of hypothermia. Elena quickly distributed rubberized lab aprons and emergency wool blankets.
Chloe broke down on a lab stool. She pulled the apron tight over her shoulders. “I saw it… its mouth had rings of needles… Tyler was already gone, wasn’t he? I got those kids killed, Elena… I’m so sorry…”
Elena stepped to her, soot-stained hands gripping Chloe’s shoulders. “Tyler died before midnight, Chloe. The monster weaponized your love. But we are still breathing. Help me tape this vent. We fight back right now.”
Chloe nodded, her jaw trembling. She grabbed a roll of industrial duct tape and actively assisted in sealing the ventilation return grates. The harsh, rhythmic tearing of duct tape echoed off the soapstone as distant scratching sounds echoed in the ceiling vents.
Maya checked the room thermometer. “Twenty-eight degrees. In ninety minutes, motor functions degrade. We won’t survive until dawn by hiding.”
Maya unlocked the vintage chemical supply locker. She retrieved a 500g jar of dark purple crystalline potassium permanganate, a bottle of 99% pure laboratory glycerin, and the five magnesium road flares recovered from Marcus Hayes.
“Hypergolic ignition,” Maya explained, setting the glass reagent jars on the preparation bench. “Potassium permanganate is a violent oxidizer. When I introduce glycerin, it generates three thousand degrees of instant thermal flame. The magnesium will burn white-hot and consume all ambient oxygen in the doorway.”
Elena grabbed the flares. “Its skin is dry acoustic membrane. If we ignite its vocal reeds, it loses resonance and burns.”
“It only works if it steps across the threshold,” Maya said. “Someone has to crack the door and pull it in.”
Together, they shaved the magnesium flare ribbons into fine silver curls. They mixed the curls into a dense permanganate powder trench along the interior sill of the steel door. Deep violet-black crystals glistened under the Maglite beam. The sweet, syrupy smell of glycerin mixed with the pungent sulfur of the flares. Maya filled a 20ml veterinary syringe with pure glycerin, rigging a direct injection plunger.
The entity arrived outside the steel door. It launched a full-scale acoustic chorus assault. Three voices projected simultaneously from different angles of the corridor: Lily Vance sobbing, Tyler Brooks whispering, and Marcus Hayes barking evacuation orders. The terrifying three-part vocal harmony vibrated through the steel plate, rattling the glass beakers on the shelves. Heavy, rhythmic thuds of calcified claws struck the outer door panel.
Elena stepped forward to the door. She gripped the crowbar in her left hand, wrapping her right fingers around the top deadbolt latch. Her heart hammered against her ribs. A sub-zero draft whistled through the keyhole.
“On my mark,” Elena whispered. “Three seconds after I pull the door. Plunger down.”
“Syringe locked,” Maya confirmed. “Ready on your count.”
Elena threw both deadbolts and jerked the heavy steel door open four inches.
Through the opening, she stared directly into the creature’s face. Sunken light-absorbing sockets stared back. The ash-gray leathery flesh stretched tightly over its skull. An unhinged vertical jaw displayed concentric rings of razor-thin vocal reeds.
The entity screeched with Lily’s voice and lunged its eight-foot spindle frame across the threshold, extending obsidian talons toward Elena’s throat.
Elena leaped backward.
“NOW, MAYA! IGNITE!”
“BURN!”
Maya depressed the syringe plunger, flooding the permanganate-magnesium bed with pure glycerin.
A blinding, deafening violet-white thermal detonation erupted across the doorway with concussive force. WHOOSH-BOOM. The blistering radiant heat scorched Elena’s eyelashes. The concussive thump hit her chest hard.
The 3,000-degree flame instantly caught the creature’s dry acoustic membrane tissue. The predator turned into a roaring pillar of incandescent fire. Screeching in ultrasonic agony, the burning entity thrashed violently down the corridor. It crashed straight through the Victorian stained-glass bay window at the end of the hall. An explosive shower of stained glass fragments rained down as the creature plunged twenty feet into the snowdrifts below.
The intense stench of ozone, scorched tissue, and burning hair filled the corridor.
“Door sealed! Everyone down!” Elena shouted, slamming the steel door shut and throwing both deadbolts into place.
Through the smoke-blackened peephole of the steel door, Elena and Maya watch the burning silhouette of the creature thrash in the snowy quadrangle twenty feet below, trailing fire before dragging itself into the pitch-black hemlock forest of Blackwood Ridge. Silence descends over the scorched chemistry lab. Elena checks her frozen Timex watch: 04:45 AM. One hour and fifteen minutes remain until sunrise.
