Chapter 5: The Blizzard Siege & The Underground Ambush
The subterranean utility tunnels beneath Vale Manor were dark, narrow, and suffocating. The air smelled of damp earth, heated copper, and the coppery tang of Marcus’s blood. The only illumination came from the erratic sweep of Viktor Kozlov’s tactical flashlight as he led the way.
Elena kept one hand firmly pressed against the makeshift tourniquet on Marcus’s shoulder, her other hand gripping the forged-steel shears in her coat pocket. Marcus moved beside her, his breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts. The three bullet wounds in his shoulder had spared his vitals, but the blood loss was severe.
“The power grid is compromised,” Elena stated, her architectural training taking over. She visualized the estate’s blueprints in her mind. “Vance locked the main breakers, but there’s an auxiliary manual override in the northern pump station. If we reach it, we can isolate the circuit and flood the conservatory with the fire suppression system.”
Viktor glanced back, his pale, watchful flint-grey eyes assessing her with newfound respect. “Can you patch the feed?”
“Give me two minutes at the terminal,” Elena confirmed.
“Then we move,” Marcus rasped, pushing off the concrete wall. “Vance won’t stop until he secures the boathouse.”
They advanced through the damp corridors until they reached the heavy steel door of the northern pump station. Viktor breached it silently. Elena slid behind the auxiliary terminal, her fingers flying over the dust-covered keyboard. She bypassed the damaged firewalls, her mind locking into the logic of the grid.
“The fire suppression system is primed,” Elena said. “On your mark.”
“Execute,” Marcus ordered.
Elena slammed the enter key. Deep within the manor’s foundations, massive industrial pumps roared to life. A concussive shudder ripped through the structure as thousands of gallons of icy lake water blasted into the ruined conservatory above, drowning the remaining mercenaries in a freezing torrent.
“Conservatory is neutralized,” Viktor confirmed over his comms, though static still choked the frequency. “But Vance is moving. He’s heading for the lakefront.”
“The boathouse,” Elena said, the realization cold in her chest. “He’s trying to escape via the 40-foot powerboat.”
“He doesn’t know you checked the telemetry,” Marcus said, a grim, bloodstained smile ghosting across his lips. “He doesn’t know the tanks are empty.”
“He will the moment he turns the key,” Elena replied. “And when the boat doesn’t start, he’ll be trapped on the pier.”
Marcus straightened, fighting through the agony of his wounds. The sovereign of the syndicate had returned, stripped of his empire but armed with something far more lethal: a father’s desperate wrath.
“Viktor,” Marcus commanded, his voice cold iron. “Secure the perimeter. No one leaves.”
They moved swiftly toward the eastern utility exit, pushing open the heavy steel grate. The blizzard hit them with the force of a freight train. Freezing Lake Michigan spray battered their faces, turning the shoreline into a chaotic blur of whiteout conditions.
At the end of the private pier, Liam Vance was frantically trying to hot-wire the dead powerboat. The wind ripped the slick veneer from his face, leaving only desperate, panicked rage.
Marcus stepped onto the frost-heaved timber of the pier. He didn’t carry a gun. He didn’t need one.
“Vance,” Marcus’s voice cut through the howling gale, resonant and inescapable.
Vance spun around, drawing a compact pistol from his coat. But before he could aim, a massive wall of freezing lake spray crashed over the breakwater, knocking him off balance.
Marcus lunged. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, grabbing Vance by the throat and slamming him into the steel mooring cleat. The pistol clattered uselessly onto the frozen planks.
Vance gasped, his eyes wide with terror as Marcus’s grip tightened. “You’re dead, Vale!” he choked out. “The Morettis own this city now!”
“They own nothing,” Marcus snarled softly, his face inches from the traitor’s. “And you… you are just a man who writes invoices.”
Marcus drew back his fist.
From the darkness of the pier’s edge, a second mercenary rose, a combat knife gleaming in the strobe lights. He lunged toward Marcus’s blind spot.
Elena didn’t hesitate. She stepped forward, drawing the heavy forged-steel landscape shears from her pocket, and drove them deep into the mercenary’s forearm. The man screamed, dropping the knife as the heavy steel severed muscle and tendon.
Marcus finished Vance with a brutal, bone-crushing blow to the jaw. The CFO collapsed onto the frozen timber, motionless.
The storm raged around them, but the pier was silent. Marcus looked at Elena, his chest heaving, his dark wool coat stained with blood and frost. She stood tall against the gale, the shears still gripped in her hand, the fierce maternal protector of their future.
“It’s over,” Marcus whispered, the fight draining from him as he fell to his knees on the frozen planks.
