Chapter 3: The Doctor’s Ultrasound & The Poisoned Glass
Elena locked the door of her private drafting annex—a high-ceilinged room filled with architectural blueprints and an electronic building management workstation. Her encrypted satellite phone buzzed against the leather blotter. She tapped the speakerphone button.
“Elena!” Simone Brooks’s urgent voice cut through the static from California. “I’ve been pulling corporate filings for Vale Industries all night. Over the last six months, $45 million has been systematically siphoned out of the Port of Chicago modernization escrow into a shell company registered in Panama called Aegis Maritime Holdings.”
Elena’s blood ran cold. “Who controls it?”
“Marcus’s signature was forged with digital authorized keys,” Simone continued, her forensic precision sharp. “The sole beneficial owner is Liam Vance. And Elena… someone just purchased $12 million in high-yield put options on Vale maritime contracts that mature at midnight. They are betting Marcus Vale dies tonight.”
Elena’s sleeve snagged on an open leather folio on Marcus’s auxiliary drafting desk. It tumbled to the floor, spilling high-resolution 800mm telephoto surveillance photographs stamped CONFIDENTIAL – KOZLOV SECURITY, dated eight months ago.
Elena picked them up. The photos showed two Moretti syndicate snipers on a rooftop across Lake Shore Drive, their optical crosshairs centered directly on the third-floor master bedroom vanity—where Elena sat every morning.
Her breath hitched in her throat. Marcus didn’t move to the west wing because he stopped loving me. He moved to turn himself into the target.
Elena turned to the facility monitoring terminal. Drawing on her architectural knowledge of the estate’s infrastructure, she bypassed the security firewalls and logged into the subterranean slip telemetry to investigate Vance’s earlier 2:00 AM boathouse escape offer.
Two fatal anomalies glowed on the phosphor screen. The interior CCTV camera feed for the boathouse was playing a 30-second pre-recorded loop. The vessel telemetry for the 40-foot powerboat indicated the twin fuel tanks were at 0.0 gallons; the fuel cutoff valves had been manually locked shut.
Vance never intended for her to reach Michigan. He planned to lock her inside a dead, unpowered boat in sub-zero waters during an Arctic blizzard, letting her freeze to death or drown, framing Marcus for domestic homicide.
Elena grabbed her heavy forged-steel landscape shears from her drafting kit and slipped them into her coat pocket. She sprinted toward the door to alert Viktor.
At that exact microsecond—midnight—the manor’s master electrical relays dropped with a thunderous metallic clatter.
The lights violently died. The hum of the heating grid shuddered into silence. Emergency red backup strobes snapped on, bathing the stone walls in a blood-crimson glare.
Elena reached the annex threshold just as a deafening concussive blast shattered the leaded glass roof of the nearby winter conservatory. Through the blaring crimson emergency strobes, the sharp crunch of combat boots on broken glass echoed down the gallery, accompanied by the cold mechanical clicks of suppressed submachine gun bolts chambering rounds.
Liam Vance’s strike team had breached the manor—and they were moving directly toward her.
