Chapter 2: The Iron Courtyard Lockdown
The library of Vale Manor was a two-story rotunda of dark oak and floor-to-ceiling volumes, smelling of old paper, leather, and gunpowder. Marcus shoved the heavy oak double doors shut behind them, the iron latch engaging with a definitive, ringing CLACK.
Elena stood in the center of the Persian rug. The blizzard wind shrieked against the reinforced leaded glass, vibrating the windowpanes.
Marcus held the divorce decree in his right hand. The paper crumpled under the white-knuckle grip of his fist. The platinum wedding band and the ultrasound photo were clutched in his left. His breathing was harsh, erratic—a stark contrast to the cold, calculating syndicate sovereign the world knew.
“You signed them,” he rasped, his voice tearing at the edges. He looked from the decree to her face, then to her abdomen beneath the thick cashmere sweater. “You signed them, and you packed a bag.”
“You made your choices eight months ago, Marcus,” Elena said. Her voice was diamond-hard, refusing to break. “You moved to the west wing. You locked the doors. You turned this house into a military bunker.”
Marcus closed the distance between them in two long strides. He stopped mere inches away, the sheer physical menace of his frame dwarfing her, yet he made no move to touch her. The rapid, shallow flutter of the pulse against the hollow of his throat betrayed the terror beneath his anger.
“I built a fortress to keep you alive!” he roared, slamming the crumpled divorce papers onto the antique globe stand. “The Moretti family put a bounty on my head. I isolated you to protect you.” He raised his trembling left hand, the ultrasound photo held between two calloused fingers. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you tell me about the baby?”
“Because a baby cannot dodge a sniper’s bullet, Marcus,” she shot back, stepping into his space, her moral authority unbroken. “I will not raise my child in a cage. Now unlock the gates.”
A sharp knock rapped against the oak doors. Dr. Sarah Thornton stepped in before Marcus could respond, her medical bag gripped tightly.
“Mr. Vale,” she stated flatly, ignoring the lethal glare he shot her. “Your wife’s blood pressure is spiking. The stress of this lockdown risks a secondary hemorrhage. If you value the life of that 162-bpm heartbeat on that photo, you will stand down.”
Marcus froze. The terrifying authority bled out of him, replaced by a sudden, devastating vulnerability. He took a slow, agonizing step backward, giving Elena space.
Outside the library, the chaos of the locked-down gala murmured. Liam Vance stood by the grand staircase, speaking into a secured satellite phone, his voice a slick whisper masked by the storm.
“The perimeter is sealed. Kozlov’s men are distracted by the guests. The boathouse trap is prepped. Send the strike team.”
