Chapter 4: The Betrayal in the Boardroom & The Blood Shield
The conservatory was a slaughterhouse of shattered glass and pulverized flora. The -25°F Arctic lake wind howled through the ruined ceiling, whipping freezing snow ozone and the scent of crushed palm fronds into the blood-crimson emergency glare.
Elena crouched behind a heavy marble planter, the forged-steel landscape shears heavy in her coat pocket. Fifty feet away, Liam Vance stood amidst the tactical strike team, his polished veneer stripped away to reveal cold, calculating malice.
“Find her,” Vance ordered, his voice devoid of emotion. “Check the west corridor. No survivors.”
The crunch of Vibram-soled combat boots advanced toward Elena’s position. A mercenary rounded the marble planter, his suppressed 9mm submachine gun raised.
Before he could fire, Marcus Vale erupted from the shadows of the botanical utility tunnel.
He didn’t hesitate. Marcus tackled the mercenary with brutal, terrifying momentum, driving him into the stone column. The sickening crack of bone snapped through the howling wind. Viktor Kozlov flanked from the right, his Glock 17 barking twice in rapid succession, dropping two more mercenaries with cold, veteran precision.
“Elena!” Marcus roared, his flint-grey eyes scanning the wreckage until they locked onto her.
He surged toward her just as the remaining mercenary trained his weapon on Elena’s unprotected position. Marcus threw himself into the line of fire. The suppressed weapon chattered. Three rounds tore through Marcus’s custom charcoal overcoat, the heavy impacts spinning him violently into the marble fountain.
“Marcus!” Elena screamed, rushing to his side.
Marcus collapsed onto the frost-covered flagstones. His left hand clamped tightly over his bleeding shoulder, but his right hand shot out, grasping Elena’s wrist—not with brutal force, but with a desperate, iron tremor.
“Down!” he gasped, pulling her behind the reinforced fountain basin as Viktor provided covering fire.
Blood soaked through Marcus’s white dress shirt, stark against the dark wool. Elena ripped the hem of her cashmere sweater, pressing the fabric hard against the gunshot wound. The metallic tang of fresh blood filled the freezing air.
“You took a bullet for me,” she whispered, her hands steady despite the chaos.
Marcus looked up at her, his breathing shallow and erratic. The terrifying syndicate sovereign was gone; all that remained was a man shattered by the fear of losing his world.
“I built a cage because I thought it was the only way to keep the monsters out,” Marcus choked out, his voice a raw rasp over the gunfire. “I was wrong. I made myself the monster. I’m sorry, Elena. I’m so sorry.”
“Save your breath, Marcus,” Viktor’s gravel-edged baritone interrupted as he reloaded his weapon. “We have twenty seconds before they breach the cellar doors. Move!”
Through the pulsating red strobes, the heavy steel door to the subterranean bunker groaned under the concussive force of a breaching charge. The iron hinges buckled.
