Chapter 2: Whispers Behind the Black Velvet

The silence in Room 404 was shattered by a low, guttural roar echoing down the stone corridor outside.

Audrey gasped as the shadows beneath the classroom door detached themselves from the floor, rising into writhing, pitch-black tendrils with glowing crimson eyes.

“Shadow Stalkers,” Wyatt said calmly, stepping between Audrey and the door. He didn’t even draw a weapon; with a flick of his leather-gloved wrist, a wave of frost erupted from his hand, freezing the dark tendrils into brittle ice that shattered onto the floorboards.

“They’re coming from the main stairwell,” Audrey whispered, looking out into the pitch-black hallway.

*CHIME!*

The purple HUD flashed back into her vision with urgent, glowing text:

Audrey’s face flushed hot. “Right now?!” she screamed internally.

“Follow me,” Wyatt commanded, taking her wrist in a firm, surprisingly cool grip. He pulled her behind the heavy mahogany podium at the front of the classroom, where a narrow alcove was hidden behind thick black velvet curtains.

The alcove was tiny—scarcely large enough for one person, let alone two.

Audrey was shoved tight against Wyatt’s broad chest. The thick velvet curtains fell shut behind them, plunging them into intimate darkness. Outside, dozens of Shadow Stalkers screeched as they swarmed into the classroom, sniffing the air for living flesh.

Audrey held her breath. Wyatt stood rigid above her, his height casting a protective shadow over her. His chest rose and fell in slow, rhythmic pulses.

Audrey knew she couldn’t hesitate. She placed both hands flat against the crisp fabric of his chest, feeling the steady, cool thrum of his spectral heartbeat.

She stood on her tiptoes, leaning her cheek against his jaw until her lips were hovering less than an inch from his ear.

Wyatt’s posture stiffened instantly. He lowered his head, his silver eyes piercing the dark as he glared down at her in surprise. “Audrey, what are you—”

“I have a secret, Professor,” Audrey whispered, her breath fluttering warmly against his ear shell. Her heart was beating so hard she felt sure he could hear it. “Every time I look into your eyes… I forget that this school is a nightmare.”

Wyatt’s breath hitched.

A sudden flare of silver light burst from his chest where her hands rested. The icy tension in his muscles softened, replaced by an unmistakable wave of heat.

Outside the curtain, the monsters growled in confusion, unable to detect any human presence, before slowly retreating back down the corridor.

In the dark alcove, Wyatt didn’t push her away. Slowly, his gloved hand rose and rested lightly on the curve of her waist, holding her close against his chest.

“You speak dangerous words, little student,” Wyatt murmured, his voice low, velvety, and laced with something far warmer than ice. “Are you trying to seduce a ghost?”
