Chapter 4: The Courtyard Rampage & The Demand to Kowtow
Outside the Glass Pavilion, cold autumn rain slashed down onto the polished granite pavers of the VIP valet courtyard. The blood-red lunar glow reflected in the deep puddles, casting an eerie crimson under-light across the idling luxury SUVs.
Selene Thorne had completely lost her mind.
Drenched in the freezing downpour, her mascara running in thick black rivers down her cheeks, Selene spotted Selena’s bespoke vehicle parked in VIP Bay 1. It was a five-million-dollar Vance Sovereign Apex-GT hypercar, its obsidian paint gleaming under the rain, detailed with subtle brushed platinum dragon crests.
Driven to psychotic hysteria by the freezing of her offshore accounts, Selene let out a feral scream. She sprinted toward the open trunk of an idling Cadillac Escalade and ripped out a heavy titanium steel golf driver.
She swung the club with all her might. Metal impacted carbon-fiber with a thunderous BANG.
The composite LED headlight cluster shattered, spraying glass across the wet granite. Selene shrieked again, swinging the club to gouge deep scratches into the custom hood. Valets and trailing paparazzi scrambled for cover, fleeing in terror from the deranged woman tearing into the multi-million-dollar machine.
Before the valets could intervene, the double glass portico doors burst open. Arthur Sterling charged into the slashing rain, followed by four hulking private bodyguards in heavy, soaked trench coats. His tie was undone, his Brioni suit ruined, his eyes bulging with violent, megalomaniacal desperation.
“Lock the perimeter!” Arthur frantically ordered the terrified guard inside the valet booth. “Lock the gates now!”
A loud electronic buzz pierced the storm. The massive twelve-foot wrought-iron courtyard gates swung shut with a heavy metallic clang, locking automatically. Everyone inside the granite perimeter was trapped.
Selena and Lucas stepped out under the portico overhang, perfectly framed against the Glass Pavilion’s exterior. They stopped at the edge of the stairs, shielded from the worst of the rain. Instantly, Arthur’s bodyguards fanned out in a tactical semi-circle, cutting off any escape route toward the circular granite fountain basin.
Lucas adjusted the fit of her tactical gloves, her athletic frame settling into a relaxed but dangerous posture. She let out a cool smirk. “Looks like the garbage took itself out into the rain, Sis.”
Arthur stepped forward, ignoring the freezing downpour. He pointed a trembling, manic finger at Selena, his chest heaving.
“You thought you could embarrass me in front of Wall Street and walk away?!” he screamed, his voice cracking with madness. “Out here in the dark, my word is law! I control the exits!”
Selene limped up beside him, the wet blonde hair plastered to her skull. She held the dented golf club out like a weapon, shrieking for blood. “Make her kneel, Arthur! Make this bitch beg in the mud!”
Arthur wiped the rain from his eyes, delivering his extortion ultimatum with blind arrogance. “Get down on your knees right now! Kowtow to Selene three times, beg for our forgiveness, and sign over all your remaining proxy shares and inheritance rights to Sterling Apex! If you don’t sign before midnight, neither you nor your brat sister will leave this courtyard alive!”
The four bodyguards reached slowly into their trench coats, resting their heavy hands on concealed holsters, taking a synchronized step forward. The threat was immediate, suffocating, and lethally real.
Selena did not flinch. She did not blink. She did not yield a single inch.
The mist blew against her porcelain face, beading on the obsidian silk gown, but she stood tall, immovable as granite. Her eyes were dead, staring right through Arthur with pure, icy contempt, freezing him to his absolute core. She viewed his violent threats as the final pathetic thrashing of a condemned man.
Lucas cracked her knuckles. The sharp, crisp snap echoed loudly over the rainfall. She dropped smoothly into a lethal close-quarters combat stance, her golden-brown eyes alight with fierce amusement. “I’ll take the two on the left. You want the rest, or should we let the cavalry handle it?”
Selena didn’t answer her sister. Instead, she looked right past Arthur’s frantic, sweating head, peering into the pitch-black tree line of Central Park South just beyond the locked gates.
With absolute, untouchable poise, Selena slowly raised two fingers into the rain-swept air.
She commanded in a low, resonant tone that cut effortlessly through the storm: “Let them see who owns the night.”
From beyond the locked iron gates, the deep, synchronized thunder of twelve high-displacement twin-turbo engines roared to life, shaking the rain from the trees. Instantly, a blinding wall of high-intensity xenon beams ignited, piercing the darkness like dragon eyes, flooding the courtyard in lethal, blinding light.
