Chapter 3: The Ironclad Severance: No-Asset Divorce

Blood Moon Betrayal: The Scorned Heiress’s Total Retribution 3 of 6

The press flashes exploded in relentless bursts, catching every bead of sweat on Arthur’s ruined face. Desperate and trapped by the undeniable evidence projected across the ballroom, Arthur lunged for the podium microphone. He ripped it from its stand, screaming into the feedback loop.

“It’s a fake!” he screeched, his voice cracking over the forty-foot acoustics. “It’s an AI-generated deepfake! This is extortion! She’s trying to bankrupt me!”

Nobody bought it. The Sterling Apex board members were already dialing their crisis management teams, the chaotic din of the ballroom drowning out Arthur’s pathetic defense. Cornered and manic, Arthur spun around and turned his bared teeth on Selena, attempting to re-establish the domestic intimidation he had relied on for three years.

“Tomorrow morning I file for divorce!” he threatened on live broadcast, leaning over the podium, his hazel eyes bulging with narcissistic rage. “Under New York law, you will walk away without a single penny! No alimony! No roof over your head! I will leave you starving on the sidewalk where I found you!”

Selena stood three paces away in absolute stillness. She regarded his blustering panic with cold, clinical amusement, untouched by the noise and the flashing strobes. Her obsidian gown absorbed the light, making her look like a monolith of sovereign power against his frantic flailing.

Smoothly, deliberately, she reached into the very black crocodile clutch Arthur had demanded security search just minutes prior.

She did not pull out a stolen ruby. Instead, she produced an original, thick legal folder wrapped in a red ribbon. The cover was heavily embossed with the undeniable gold seal of the New York State Supreme Court, resting just below the crest of the Vance Global Legal Consortium.

Selena stepped up to the podium. She did not snatch the microphone from Arthur; she simply adjusted the second gooseneck mic, her movements rhythmic, precise, and completely devoid of panic.

She opened the folder and read the clauses with crystal, icy clarity. Her voice sliced through the ballroom, carrying the weight of an execution order.

“Pursuant to the Sovereign Prenuptial Covenant established on May 14th,” she spoke, her tone measured. “Section 14, Subsection B: Documented infidelity, reputational sabotage, or corporate embezzlement by Party B triggers total forfeiture of all marital property and joint assets.”

Arthur went pale.

Selena didn’t stop. “Section 14, Subsection C: Party B—Arthur Sterling—assumes one hundred percent of all corporate debts, liabilities, and legal penalties, with zero claim on Party A.”

Arthur recognized the thick parchment. He recognized the red ribbon. More devastatingly, he recognized his own arrogant signature at the bottom of the exposed page—signed three years ago when he was too desperate for the cash injection that saved his floundering firm to actually read the dense legal annexes.

From the VIP riser, Manhattan DA William Sterling-Hayes and the Senior SEC Enforcement Counsel stepped down, parting the sea of photographers. DA Sterling-Hayes, impeccable in his tailored charcoal suit, approached the podium. He pulled his reading glasses from his breast pocket and inspected the notarized original covenant resting in Selena’s hands.

The room held its breath.

“The seals are authenticated,” the DA announced, his voice projecting institutional gravitas. “This contract is one hundred percent legally binding.”

He turned away from Selena and glared directly at Arthur. “Given the forensic evidence of felony wire fraud broadcast tonight, I am announcing an immediate emergency state freeze on all domestic and offshore accounts belonging to Arthur Sterling, Sterling Apex Industries, and Thorne Dynasty Holdings.”

To his right, Selene Thorne let out a choked shriek. The reality of the financial annihilation hit her like a physical blow. She collapsed against the heavy floral arrangement beside the stage, dropping her designer clutch as she realized the $45 million hidden in her Caymans shell accounts was permanently locked down. Her dreams of Wall Street royalty were dead.

Selena Vance remained utterly detached. She raised her left hand and smoothly slipped the three-carat platinum diamond wedding band off her finger. The ring felt heavy, a burdensome symbol of a contract she no longer needed to maintain.

She held the ring directly over Arthur’s untouched crystal champagne flute resting on the podium table. She let it fall.

The platinum band plunged through the golden bubbles of Dom Pérignon. It hit the bottom with a resonant, crystalline clink that echoed perfectly through the stunned hush of the room.

Selena delivered the killing blow.

“You entered this marriage with nothing, Arthur,” she stated, her icy-blue eyes drilling into his trembling soul. “And that is exactly what you will leave with.”

She turned. She did not argue, debate, or linger to watch the fallout. She walked down the center aisle of the Grand Ballroom. The elite crowd, Manhattan’s wealthiest and most powerful, parted in stunned reverence, clearing her path to the exit.

Behind her, the chaos finally consumed the stage. Furious Sterling Apex board members and Wall Street lenders surged past the paralyzed security guards. They grabbed Arthur by the ruined lapels of his Brioni suit in a violent, screaming shouting match. But Arthur wasn’t looking at them. His bloodshot, desperate eyes tracked Selena’s sovereign silhouette as she walked out into the rainy, midnight courtyard, watching his only salvation vanish into the dark.
