Chapter 5: The Golden Dragon Gala & The Sovereign Trap
The Golden Dragon Gala was the undisputed apex of New York’s social calendar, an event where fortunes were made and unmade amidst champagne flutes and forced pleasantries. Held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, it was a sea of bespoke tuxedos, glittering diamonds, and ruthless ambition.
Isabella stepped into the opulent space, the emerald silk gown from *L’Étoile Noire* hugging her curves perfectly, the diamonds at her throat catching the light of a thousand chandeliers. Beside her stood Julian, the epitome of quiet power in his impeccably tailored suit. He commanded the room without saying a word, parting the sea of socialites as they made their way toward the center of the ballroom.
Marcus Sterling was there, holding court by the ice sculpture, looking every inch the victorious titan. He was set to announce the ‘finalized’ Horizon Project tonight, cementing his legacy. As he caught sight of Isabella, a smug smile played on his lips, though it faltered slightly when he registered the man beside her.
“Isabella,” Marcus purred as they approached, his eyes sweeping over her with a mix of appraisal and disdain. “I didn’t expect you to show your face here tonight. And who is your… escort?”
“This is Julian,” Isabella said, her voice steady, the reclaimed blueprints acting as a shield of confidence.
Marcus let out a short, patronizing laugh. “Julian. Charming. I hope you aren’t here to make a scene, Isabella. Tonight is about the future of Sterling Enterprises. My future.”
“Actually, Marcus,” Julian spoke up, his voice resonating with a dangerous calm. “Tonight is about transparency.”
Before Marcus could retort, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open. A hush fell over the crowd as a distinguished, silver-haired man walked in, flanked by two serious-looking individuals in dark suits. It was Arthur Vance, the highly respected and notoriously unyielding head of the City Planning Commission.
Vance marched directly toward their group, ignoring the frantic whispers rippling through the room.
“Mr. Sterling,” Vance announced, his voice carrying across the silent ballroom. “We have received undeniable proof that the digital models submitted for the Horizon Project were fraudulently altered. The original intellectual property belongs to Ms. Isabella Thorne.”
Marcus’s face drained of color. “That’s impossible. Those files are secure. This is a fabrication!”
Vance turned to Julian, offering a brief, respectful nod. “The evidence was provided through a secure, encrypted channel early this morning, validated by top cybersecurity experts. Mr. Sterling, your submission is rejected, and your firm is under immediate investigation for corporate espionage and fraud.”
The trap had sprung.
Marcus stumbled back, his carefully constructed empire crumbling before the elite audience he so desperately wanted to impress. He looked at Isabella, then at Julian, the realization dawning on him that he had been outmaneuvered not by his ex-wife, but by the mysterious man standing beside her.
“Who are you?” Marcus demanded, his voice trembling with rage and fear.
Julian stepped forward, the Infinite Sovereign Card briefly visible as he adjusted his jacket. “I am the man who ensures that real value is protected from those who only know how to steal it. You cast her aside, Marcus. But she is far more valuable than your entire company.”
As security approached to escort a sputtering Marcus from his own moment of triumph, Isabella felt a profound sense of closure. The Golden Dragon Gala had witnessed the fall of a tyrant and the rise of a queen, orchestrated by a sovereign who preferred the shadows to the spotlight.
