Chapter 1: Courthouse Coldness, Grease-Stained Vows

You Cast Me Aside, He Holds Me Dear 1 of 6

The rain fell in sheets against the imposing stone facade of the Manhattan courthouse, mirroring the coldness that had settled in Isabella’s heart. She stood on the steps, her trench coat pulled tight, holding the finalized divorce papers. Five years of marriage to Marcus Sterling, reduced to a few signatures on crisp, unfeeling parchment. He had looked at her with such clinical detachment inside, his eyes devoid of the warmth that once defined their early days. To him, she was a relic of a past he had outgrown—a stepping stone on his ascent to the pinnacle of New York’s real estate elite.

“It’s for the best, Isabella,” Marcus had said, adjusting his bespoke Italian tie, not bothering to meet her gaze. “You never could keep up with the world I’m building.”

She hadn’t fought him. What was there left to fight for? The man she loved had been suffocated by ambition and greed, leaving behind a stranger draped in arrogance. As she watched his sleek black Bentley pull away from the curb, splashing muddy water onto her worn boots, a tear finally betrayed her stoic facade. She wiped it away furiously. She wouldn’t cry for him. Not anymore.

Seeking refuge from the storm, Isabella ducked into a small, dimly lit diner across the street. The bell above the door chimed, a small, cheerful sound that felt incongruous with the heavy sorrow anchoring her soul. She slid into a booth near the window, the vinyl seat cold against her damp clothes.

“Coffee? Black, right?” The waitress, a motherly woman named Marge, asked gently, noticing Isabella’s disheveled state.

“Please,” Isabella whispered, offering a weak smile.

As Marge turned away, the door chimed again. A man stepped in, shaking the rain from a battered leather jacket. He wasn’t wearing a suit. His boots were scuffed, his jeans faded, and his hands—large and capable—bore the faint, unmistakable stains of motor grease. But it was his presence that commanded the room. He moved with a quiet, grounded confidence, his dark hair messy from the weather, his jaw set with a quiet strength.

He caught her eye. It wasn’t a glance of pity or casual dismissal like Marcus’s; it was a look of deep, seeing intensity. He walked over to the counter, ordered a black coffee, and then, to Isabella’s surprise, turned and walked toward her booth.

“Mind if I sit?” his voice was a low, resonant rumble, a stark contrast to the sterile, clipped tones of the corporate world she had just left behind.

“It’s a free country,” she replied, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest.

He slid in opposite her, placing a pair of grease-stained hands on the table. “I’m Julian,” he said simply. “And you look like you’ve just lost a war, but survived the battle.”

Isabella let out a hollow laugh. “Something like that. I’m Isabella.”

“Well, Isabella,” Julian said, his eyes crinkling slightly at the corners, “I find that sometimes, the best way to start over is with a good cup of coffee and a stranger who doesn’t know your history.”

For the first time in months, Isabella felt a genuine smile tug at her lips. The courthouse across the street felt miles away. The grease-stained hands across the table felt more real, more honest, than any vow she had exchanged in a tailored suit. In the warmth of the diner, amidst the scent of cheap coffee and rain, a new vow was silently taking root—a vow to rebuild, not in the shadows of someone else’s empire, but on her own unyielding terms. And perhaps, just perhaps, with someone who valued the grease and grit of real life over the hollow shine of gold.
