Chapter 3: Boutique Mockery & The Infinite Sovereign Card

You Cast Me Aside, He Holds Me Dear 3 of 6

The invitation to the charity gala arrived in a thick, cream-colored envelope, embossed with gold lettering. It was the kind of event Isabella used to attend on Marcus’s arm, a dazzling display of wealth where smiles were currency and gossip was the main course. Now, it felt like a battlefield she had to cross alone. She needed a dress, and for that, she ventured into the heart of Manhattan’s high-end shopping district.

Stepping into *L’Étoile Noire*, a boutique known for its exclusive clientele and exorbitant prices, Isabella felt a familiar wave of anxiety. She was dressed simply in jeans and a silk blouse, a stark contrast to the perfectly manicured women browsing the racks.

“May I help you?” The saleswoman, a lithe woman named Seraphina, approached with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. She expertly scanned Isabella’s attire, her gaze lingering on the lack of designer labels.

“I’m looking for a gown for the gala this weekend,” Isabella said, keeping her voice even.

Seraphina’s smile thinned. “Our evening collection starts at ten thousand dollars, madam. Perhaps you might find something more… suitable in the department stores down the avenue.”

The thinly veiled insult stung, a sharp reminder of the world that had so easily discarded her. Before Isabella could respond, a familiar voice cut through the tense air.

“She will be trying on the emerald silk creation in the window. And the diamond parure to match.”

Isabella turned to see Julian standing in the doorway. But this wasn’t the grease-stained mechanic from Brooklyn. He was dressed in a flawlessly tailored charcoal suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence. He looked every inch a king stepping into his domain.

Seraphina’s eyes widened, recognizing authority even if she didn’t recognize the man. “Sir, that gown is a one-of-a-kind piece, reserved for…”

“Reserved for the lady,” Julian interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. He walked over to Isabella, gently placing a hand on the small of her back. “You look beautiful in anything, but green is your color.”

Flustered, Seraphina stammered, “I—I’ll need to see a form of payment before I can allow the gown to be tried on, sir. It’s store policy.”

Julian’s expression remained impassive. He reached into his breast pocket and withdrew a sleek, matte black card. It bore no bank logo, only a small, stylized emblem of a soaring falcon. He handed it to the saleswoman.

Seraphina took the card, her hands trembling slightly. She swiped it through the terminal. The machine beeped, a soft, affirmative sound, and the screen flashed a single word: *APPROVED*.

The color drained from Seraphina’s face. The Infinite Sovereign Card. An urban legend among the elite, a card with no limit, issued only to a handful of individuals globally whose wealth and power transcended conventional banking.

“R-right away, Mr…” she stammered, handing the card back with a deep, reverent nod. “Please, follow me, Miss.”

As Isabella was led to the VIP fitting room, she glanced back at Julian. He offered a small, reassuring smile, pocketing the mysterious card. The boutique mockery had been silenced, replaced by a profound realization: the man she thought was a simple mechanic held secrets far more powerful than the superficial wealth she had left behind. The game had changed, and Julian was playing on a level Marcus could only dream of.
