Chapter 5: The Vance Liquidation & The Midnight Summons

Who Is My Wife’s Real Husband? 5 of 6

Eighty floors above the gridlocked, storm-swept streets of Riveria Metropolis, the executive war room of the Sterling Global Tower operated in absolute silence.

Panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass wrapped around the massive circular room, offering a commanding view of the city below. Flashes of distant lightning reflected against the dark glass, briefly illuminating the twenty elite financial analysts working at multi-tiered holographic workstations. The only sounds were the gentle, continuous hum of cooling fans in the massive server racks and the faint, rapid tapping of keyboards.

Eleanor Sterling-Ward stood at the head of the monolithic black-marble conference table. She held an embossed leather dossier bearing the gold-leaf Sterling Phoenix crest. She reviewed the final execution data with cold, surgical efficiency, projecting the figures onto the central holographic display.

The blue light of the screens illuminated her sharp, calculating features.

“Asset liquidation and severance commands executed to full effect,” Eleanor announced to the room, her voice crisp and devoid of empathy.

She turned to the first digital balance sheet, swiping her hand to expand the Vance Holdings corporate structure. “Vance Holdings has been entirely severed. One hundred percent of commercial credit lines terminated. The corporate stock was forcibly halted at zero dollars after a seventy-two percent intraday crash. Riveria Commercial Bank, acting under our directive, has initiated involuntary liquidation of all twelve Vance shipping terminals and freight warehouses.”

The analysts nodded, updating their respective terminals.

Eleanor moved to the next file. “Target two: Logan Vance. Personal debt liabilities have been formally documented and exposed to his creditors. He owes forty-five million dollars across Macau gambling syndicates and fraudulent offshore shell loans. Federal arrest warrants have been signed for corporate embezzlement and wire fraud. He is entirely insolvent.”

She tapped the final file. “Target three: Chloe Sterling. All secondary Centurion accounts destroyed. The fourteen-million, two-hundred-eighty-five-thousand-dollar clawback lien has been registered and served by the High Commercial Tribunal. Physical eviction from Skycrest 58A is complete. Her name has been permanently blacklisted from every luxury establishment, aviation charter, and private bank in Riveria.”

Eleanor closed the leather binder. The sound was a crisp, definitive SNAP that echoed across the silent marble table.

“The target entities have been reduced to dust,” Eleanor said smoothly. “Inform the Grand Monarch management. The stage is set for the Patriarch’s return.”

Miles away, in the private executive lounge behind Apex Customs, the atmosphere was entirely different. It was an atmosphere of brotherhood and earned elevation.

Oliver Hayes stood before a triple-panel mirror. The blood had been wiped from his face, and his split brow was expertly treated with a sterile surgical strip. Surrounding him were two master tailors, flown in directly from Savile Row on Joe’s orders. They moved with silent precision, making the final adjustments to a bespoke, midnight-blue Italian tuxedo with pure silk grosgrain lapels.

Oliver extended his arms, feeling the rich texture of the custom worsted wool. He looked at his reflection, rubbing his rugged, grease-stained jaw with a self-conscious grin.

“Joe, I look like a Fortune 500 Chairman,” Oliver chuckled, shaking his head. “I’m just a guy who builds engines with grease on his fingers. I feel like I’m wearing a costume.”

The heavy oak door opened. Joe Sterling entered the room. He was dressed in an immaculate, obsidian three-piece suit that exuded a quiet, ancient authority. The suit was devoid of flashy branding, tailored to exact perfection, transforming him into the terrifying sovereign he truly was.

Joe walked up beside Oliver, looking at his foster brother’s reflection in the glass.

“You’re not just a mechanic, Oliver,” Joe said, his low baritone filled with absolute sincerity and respect. “You never were.”

Joe reached into his pocket. He pulled out a heavy, brushed-platinum card—the Grand Monarch Platinum Sovereign Keycard. He reached over and slid it cleanly into the breast pocket of Oliver’s tuxedo. The heavy metal settled perfectly against the silk lapel.

“Starting tonight,” Joe continued, “you are the Chairman and Managing Director of Sterling Advanced Mobility. You are backed by an initial five-hundred-million-dollar production fund, fully authorized by the Master Trust.”

Oliver stared at the platinum card, his eyes widening. He turned to Joe, opening his mouth to protest, but the words caught in his throat.

“Those who stood by me in the dust will stand with me at the pinnacle,” Joe said quietly, placing a firm hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “You bled for my honor today. Tonight, Riveria will bow to yours.”

Oliver’s eyes shone with profound emotion. The two foster brothers clasped hands, their grip tight, bound by an unbreakable loyalty forged in grease and proven in blood.

Two blocks away from the glittering facade of the Grand Monarch Hotel, a very different transformation was taking place.

The stark, grimy public transit restroom was illuminated by harsh, buzzing fluorescent tubes. The air smelled pungently of cheap pine disinfectant and damp concrete.

Logan Vance stood beneath a roaring electric hand dryer. He held his wrinkled, rain-soaked pastel pink blazer under the hot blast of air, cursing under his breath as he desperately tried to blow the dampness out of the ruined fabric.

Across the room, Chloe Sterling leaned over a stained porcelain sink. The mirror was cracked and speckled with grime. She was using a handful of cosmetic tester samples—stolen from a nearby department store counter during their frantic run through the rain—to desperately cover the dark circles under her eyes and reapply her smudged mascara.

She pulled away from the mirror, breathing heavily, and reached into her damp Chanel jacket. Her trembling fingers pulled out two cheap, gold-foil balcony passes. The serial numbers were slightly misaligned—counterfeits obtained from Logan’s shady street broker just an hour prior.

“Logan, look at me,” Chloe hissed, holding up the passes. “These passes get us onto the VIP mezzanine. They scan as general entry, but in the chaos, no one will check the holograms. Once the gala begins and the Sovereign Patriarch steps to the podium, we break through the velvet rope. We throw ourselves at his feet, and we tell him exactly how Joe framed us!”

Logan ran a cheap plastic pocket comb through his greasy, rain-slicked pompadour. His hands were still shaking from his father’s phone call.

“Yes!” Logan agreed, his eyes wide with desperate delusion. “I’ll explain to Patriarch Sterling that Vance Holdings is ready to become his exclusive logistics arm in Riveria! With his backing, my father’s debts will vanish in seconds! The federal investigators will back off the moment the Patriarch claims us!”

He grabbed Chloe by the shoulders, his grip painfully tight. “And you… make sure you smile. Charm him, Chloe. Billionaires of that caliber cannot resist a woman of your beauty. If he likes you, he’ll save us.”

Chloe sneered with manic confidence, turning back to the mirror to fix her bright red lipstick. The heavy scent of cheap cosmetics filled the damp air.

“When Patriarch Sterling sees me, he’ll recognize real high-society royalty,” Chloe declared to her reflection. “Joe thought he could ruin me with his petty sabotage? I’m going to become the Patriarch’s favorite protégée, and I’ll have Joe thrown into federal prison for the rest of his pathetic life!”

Outside, the violent thunderstorm finally broke. The thick clouds parted, leaving Riveria Metropolis washed clean beneath a crystal-clear, star-studded midnight sky.

The private subterranean sovereign driveway of the Grand Monarch Hotel—Bay 001—had been entirely transformed. The ruined Ferrari and the wrecked prototype were gone. The epoxy floor had been scrubbed to a pristine, mirror-like perfection by Sterling maintenance teams.

A motorcade swept down the ramp. Six obsidian Rolls-Royce Phantom VIIIs, flanked by four heavily armored black tactical SUVs, glided silently into the garage. The deep, bank-vault thud of the armored doors closing echoed through the vast space.

Waiting for them were General Manager Montgomery and thirty senior hotel executives. They stood in two flawless, militant lines along a freshly laid crimson carpet, bowing forward at precise ninety-degree angles.

Joe Sterling stepped out from the lead Rolls-Royce. He adjusted his platinum Phoenix lapel pin. Oliver Hayes stepped out from the opposite side, looking every bit the billionaire titan in his Savile Row tuxedo.

Montgomery remained bowed, his voice trembling with reverent awe. “Patriarch Sterling. Welcome home. The Sovereign Ballroom is fully secured. Riveria’s top one hundred corporate chairs, bank presidents, and foreign ambassadors are seated. Ms. Sterling-Ward is waiting at the primary podium.”

Joe looked toward the private elevator that led directly to the ballroom’s main stage. His obsidian eyes were unreadable, holding the terrifying stillness of a waiting executioner.

“Excellent,” Joe nodded with quiet, lethal grace. “Let the gala commence.”

High above, Chloe and Logan sneaked through the rain-soaked garden terrace, deliberately bypassing the main paparazzi red-carpet entrance where their names would certainly trigger an alarm.

They slipped through a side door and approached an overworked junior usher managing the mezzanine stairs. Logan puffed out his chest, flashing the counterfeit gold-foil balcony passes with a practiced, arrogant flick of the wrist.

The usher scanned the barcode. The machine let out a sharp yellow beep, displaying `GUEST: MEZZANINE ACCESS` on the screen. Too exhausted to verify the holographic seals, the usher simply unclipped the velvet rope and waved them through.

Chloe and Logan rushed up the carpeted stairs and pushed through the monumental mahogany double doors.

They stepped onto the balcony and looked down at the breathtaking expanse of the Grand Monarch Sovereign Ballroom.

It was a vision of unimaginable power and wealth. Above them blazed twelve massive crystal chandeliers, casting a blinding, golden shimmer over the room. Three hundred billionaires, politicians, and tycoons stood in immaculate white-tie attire, mingling around towering champagne pyramids. The fragrant aroma of vintage Dom Pérignon and roasted white truffles drifted up to the balcony.

Chloe’s eyes widened in breathless ecstasy. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She gripped the velvet railing.

“Logan… we made it inside,” Chloe whispered, intoxicated by the sheer volume of wealth below her. “The power… the money… This is where we belong!”

Logan pointed a trembling finger toward the elevated center stage at the far end of the ballroom. Behind the primary podium hung a monumental, gold-embroidered banner bearing the terrifying Sterling Phoenix Crest. Beneath it sat an empty, velvet-lined sovereign throne.

“Look at the throne dais!” Logan hissed excitedly. “The Sovereign Patriarch is about to make his entrance! The moment he speaks, we move. This is our moment to rise!”

The massive grandfather clock at the edge of the ballroom struck 8:30 PM. The deep, resonant bass chime vibrated through the floorboards, silencing the crowd below.

The gates of judgment had officially opened.
