Chapter 4: The Skycrest Eviction & The Fourteen-Million-Dollar Clawback

Who Is My Wife’s Real Husband? 4 of 6

Torrential rain lashed aggressively against the windows of a battered, yellow city cab, stuck deep in Riveria Metropolis’s gridlocked afternoon traffic.

Following their brutal ejection from the Royal Galleria, Logan’s rented neon-yellow Ferrari had been swiftly impounded. The luxury exotic rental agency had received an immediate alert regarding the Centurion card cancellation, dispatching a flatbed tow truck to repossess the vehicle before Logan could even toss the valet the keys.

Now, Chloe and Logan sat cramped in the cracked vinyl backseat of a public taxi. The rhythmic, abrasive squeak of worn wiper blades dragging across the windshield was the only sound in the suffocatingly small cabin. The air was stale, thick with the smell of damp upholstery and cheap pine air freshener. Cold condensation misted the windows, boxing them into their own private purgatory.

Chloe’s cream Chanel tweed suit, previously impeccable, was damp and rumpled from their frantic sprint through the downpour. Her manicured fingers tapped furiously against the glass screen of her phone. She swiped between banking applications, luxury concierge services, and private aviation charters.

Every single application displayed the exact same merciless locked status: `ACCOUNT SUSPENDED – CONTACT PRIMARY TRUSTEE`

Chloe took a sharp, trembling breath, trying to force her haughty composure back into place. Beside her, Logan was pale and sweating, gnawing his thumbnail raw. His arrogant, boastful swagger had completely vanished, leaving behind the terrified boy he truly was.

“Stop hyperventilating, Logan,” Chloe snapped, though her voice shook. “It’s just an administrative freeze by the Sterling banking network. A temporary hold for suspected fraud because Davenport destroyed the physical card. When we get to my penthouse at Skycrest, everything will be fine.”

She patted her damp Birkin bag. “I have hundreds of thousands in diamond jewelry, bearer bonds, and designer bags sitting in my walk-in safe right now. We can liquidate them immediately. My penthouse is untouchable.”

Logan didn’t look at her. “You better be telling the truth, Chloe. If my father finds out about the card failure, he’ll tear me apart.”

“I am,” Chloe insisted, her phone screen flashing `ACCESS DENIED` once more before she turned it off.

The taxi finally pulled into the towering circular driveway of the Skycrest Luxury Towers. Chloe threw a damp fifty-dollar bill at the driver and dragged Logan out into the rain, rushing through the glass doors of the grand lobby. They ignored the concierge, stepping directly into the private, gold-inlaid elevator designated exclusively for the penthouse tiers.

Chloe scanned her keycard. The elevator shot upward in a silent, high-speed ascent.

The heavy doors chimed and slid open onto the 58th-floor private vestibule. Chloe stepped out, a smug smile already reforming on her lips as she prepared to welcome Logan to her fortress of luxury.

She stopped dead in her tracks.

The opulent, marble-floored foyer was in absolute chaos. It was crowded with heavy wooden shipping crates, rolling industrial garment racks, and three burly movers dressed in navy coveralls.

Directly in front of Penthouse 58A’s massive double mahogany doors stood a locksmith in heavy work boots. He was leaning into a high-powered, industrial rotary drill. The high-pitched whine of the drill bit boring into brass echoed through the vestibule. The custom digital fingerprint scanner that had granted Chloe access for three years had been completely drilled out, leaving a smoking metallic cavity. The hot, acrid smell of scorched metal shavings and wood dust hung thick in the air.

As Chloe watched in paralyzed horror, the locksmith withdrew the drill and bolted a massive, industrial boron-steel padlock directly across the heavy brass handles.

“Stop!” Chloe shrieked, lunging forward, her voice breaking into pure hysteria. “What are you doing to my penthouse?! Get your filthy hands off my home!”

A mover rolling a rack filled with Chloe’s custom silk evening gowns—now stuffed unceremoniously into plastic vacuum bags—paused, looking at her with mild annoyance.

From the marble corridor adjacent to the vestibule, a tall, imposing man in a tailored gray suit stepped forward. He held a thick black leather portfolio bearing crimson judicial stamps. Behind him stood two uniformed court bailiffs.

Senior Marshal Miller of the Riveria High Commercial Tribunal looked down at Chloe with the warmth of a glacier.

“Mrs. Chloe Sterling?” Miller asked, his tone entirely bureaucratic.

Chloe screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the padlock. “I am Mrs. Sterling! And this is my penthouse! Who authorized this criminal trespass?!”

Miller did not blink. He opened the leather portfolio and handed her a thick sheaf of embossed court parchment.

“By writ of the High Commercial Tribunal, pursuant to an emergency filing by Sterling Horizon Properties Trust,” Miller recited with cold, practiced efficiency. “Penthouse 58A is deeded property of the Sterling Family Office. Your discretionary occupancy permit was formally revoked at 12:45 PM today.”

Chloe stared at the parchment. “That’s impossible! Joe signed the lease for me! My husband signed it!”

Miller’s voice turned ice-cold. “Mr. Joe Sterling was the sole beneficial guarantor. Under Article 14 of the Master Trust, all personal property, jewelry, haute couture, vehicles, and furnishings purchased with Trust funds over the past twelve months are subject to immediate emergency clawback.”

Miller tapped the crimson seal on the front page of the writ. “The restitution claim filed against you personally stands at exactly fourteen million, two hundred eighty-five thousand, four hundred dollars. All physical assets within this unit have been legally seized.”

Chloe’s knees gave out. She collapsed onto the cold marble floor, her Chanel skirt bunching around her bare knees. She clutched her head as the movers wheeled away the final wooden crate containing her entire walk-in jewelry safe.

Miller delivered his final ultimatum, looking down at the broken woman. “You have three minutes to exit the building, madam, or you will be placed under civil arrest for trespassing.”

Logan grabbed Chloe by the arm, hauling her up with frantic strength. “We have to go. Chloe, we have to go now!”

He dragged the weeping Chloe back to the elevator, hammering the lobby button. They descended in agonizing silence, the cold reality of the fourteen-million-dollar clawback crushing the air from their lungs.

They spilled out into the Skycrest ground-floor lobby, panting heavily. Logan pulled Chloe behind a large marble pillar to avoid the eyes of the security guards stationed near the entrance.

Suddenly, Logan’s gold iPhone began to vibrate violently against the marble table beside him. The screen flashed: `FATHER – RICHARD VANCE`.

Logan stared at the screen as if it were a bomb. His hands shook uncontrollably as he swiped to answer, bringing the phone to his ear.

“D-Dad?” Logan stammered, his voice trembling. “Did the credit line—”

A deafening, cracked shriek erupted from the speaker, the volume so loud it echoed across the marble lobby.

“LOGAN, YOU BRAINLESS BASTARD! WHAT DID YOU DO?!”

Richard Vance did not sound like a powerful corporate tycoon. He was weeping. He sounded absolutely hysterical, his voice raw and breathless with absolute terror.

“Riveria Commercial Bank just dispatched thirty federal marshals to our corporate headquarters!” Richard wailed into the phone. “They cancelled our eighty-million-dollar credit facility without five seconds of notice! They said the Sterling Global Fund completely revoked our parent guarantee!”

Logan’s face turned as pale as a corpse. His stomach dropped into a bottomless abyss. “Dad… no… the Sterling Fund has guaranteed our bank loans for three years! We’re partners!”

“Our stock crashed seventy-two percent in forty minutes!” Richard Vance screamed, the sound of breaking glass echoing in the background of the call. “The exchange halted trading! The board of directors is voting to liquidate our shipping terminals to cover the margin call, and federal fraud investigators are seizing our servers! We are bankrupt, Logan! We are going to prison!”

The line cut out, replaced by a harsh dial tone.

Logan’s fingers went entirely numb. The gold iPhone slipped from his grasp. It hit the marble lobby tiles with a sharp CRACK, the screen spiderwebbing across the glass. The shattered screen flickered, illuminating a red market stock graph plummeting violently to zero before dying completely.

Outside the glass walls of the lobby, a deafening roar of thunder shook the tower.

Logan sank against the marble pillar, letting out ragged, hyperventilating gasps.

Fifteen minutes later, driven out by Skycrest security, Chloe and Logan huddled under a dark, rain-swept metal bus shelter across the street from the luxury tower.

The cold rain drummed relentlessly against the corrugated metal roof. Luxury cars sped past, splashing dirty, oil-slicked gutter water onto Logan’s ruined designer loafers. An eerie green neon streetlight flickered above them, casting sickly shadows over their damp, shivering bodies.

Logan sat on the wet bench with his head buried in his hands, rocking back and forth in pure catatonic shock. “Eighty million… eighty million… I’m going to federal prison… My father is going to kill me…”

Chloe stood before him. Her makeup had smudged into dark, tragicomic rings around her eyes. Her hair hung in wet strands. But as she stared at the glowing skyline of Riveria, her eyes widened with a sudden, manic, desperate adrenaline.

She grabbed Logan’s soaked pastel lapels, hauling him upright. “Logan! Look at me! We’re not dead yet! Think about it! Who cancelled your bank guarantee? The Sterling Global Fund! Who owns my penthouse? The Sterling Family Office!”

Logan blinked through the sweat and rainwater, his eyes unfocused. “What are you saying?!”

Chloe’s face twisted with manic, terrifying conviction. The institutional warfare had been so swift, so impossibly vast, that her mind completely rejected reality. She clung to the only delusion that could save her ego.

“Joe is a low-level consultant!” Chloe hissed, her eyes wild. “He must have used his petty corporate access to file fraudulent reports against us! He triggered an automated administrative freeze! But tonight is the Grand Monarch Annual Elite Gala!”

She shook Logan violently. “The mysterious Sterling Patriarch—the supreme ruler of the entire multi-trillion-dollar empire—is attending in person! If we get into that ballroom, throw ourselves at the Patriarch’s feet, and expose Joe’s petty sabotage, the Patriarch will crush Joe for abusing the system! He will restore our wealth!”

Logan looked up. The rain dripped from his slicked-back hair, but a pathetic glimmer of hope pierced his terror. He grasped at the delusion like a drowning man grabbing a razor blade.

“The Patriarch…” Logan gasped. “Yes! I have two counterfeit VIP balcony passes from my broker! They were just for show, but they’ll get us past the outer perimeter! If we get close to the Patriarch, he can save Vance Holdings with a single signature!”

Chloe wiped her smudged mascara with a trembling, defiant smile. The cold chill seeping through her ruined Chanel suit was forgotten, replaced by the blazing fire of her absolute delusion.

“Yes!” Chloe declared to the thunderstorm. “Patriarch Sterling is a true titan. When he sees how loyal and sophisticated we are, when he sees what a real woman I am, we will beg for his protection. And Joe will rot in the gutter where he belongs!”

Logan grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the street to flag another cab. “Tonight at the Grand Monarch… we meet the Patriarch, or our lives are over.”
