Chapter 1: Sovereign Bay 001 & The Smashed Supercar

Who Is My Wife’s Real Husband? 1 of 6

The air in the subterranean VIP parking level of the 7-star Grand Monarch Hotel was deliberately still. Filtered, cooled to a precise sixty-eight degrees, and carrying the faint, curated scent of cedar and polished concrete. The heavy gray epoxy floors gleam undisturbed beneath the steady, recessed halogen downlights, an expanse built to insulate the true elite from the noise of the Riveria Metropolis above.

At the deepest end of the cavernous garage, Bay 001 was set apart. A heavy brushed-platinum stanchion stood like a quiet sentinel at its border, next to an illuminated digital floor sensor that glowed with a pale, arctic blue light. The display read: `RESERVED: STERLING SOVEREIGN`.

Inside the bay sat eighteen months of silent, obsessive labor.

Oliver Hayes wiped a slick of warm synthetic engine oil and polishing compound from his bruised knuckles with a heavy red shop rag. He leaned over the open rear deck of the bespoke prototype supercar, fitting a heavy steel wrench to the final center-locking titanium nut of the suspension framework. He applied pressure, sinking his weight into the turn. The heavy, satisfying click of the precision torque wrench echoed cleanly through the empty garage.

It was a one-of-a-kind, hand-formed aerodynamic titan. Unpainted satin carbon-fiber body panels draped over a hand-beaten aerospace titanium chassis. The vented hood, aggressively sloped yet elegantly restrained, housed a custom twin-turbo V10 engine. Beneath the massive carbon intake plenum, nestled where only a craftsman or an owner would look, sat a hand-engraved Sterling Phoenix Crest. That small etching alone held a three-and-a-half-million-dollar valuation—an unrepeatable engineering marvel.

Oliver stepped back, breathing heavily, and beamed with rugged craftsman pride. He slapped the roof gently. “Eighteen months, Joe. Hand-machined every valve, hand-laid every carbon weave. Chloe wanted a car that Riveria’s elite couldn’t buy in any showroom. Well, here she is—one of one on Earth.”

Joe Sterling stood beside him. He wore a tailored charcoal trench coat and simple, perfectly cut slacks. His posture was utterly calm, a man who occupied space without needing to announce his arrival. He placed a steady, appreciative hand on Oliver’s shoulder. The scent of high-grade Connolly leather and curing clear-coat wafted from the engine bay.

“You’ve outdone yourself, Oliver,” Joe said, his voice a low, measured baritone. “When this day is over, Apex Customs won’t be just an industrial workshop. I’m backing your dream to the finish.”

Oliver nodded, wiping his hands again, his smile widening.

Joe stepped away from the masterpiece and withdrew an unadorned black velvet jewelry box from his breast pocket. He popped the latch with a flick of his thumb. Resting inside on the black silk was the ancient Sterling Sovereign Ring. The unblemished, deep violet-black star sapphire was set in four generations of hand-forged antique platinum. The deep, starry violet refraction within the sapphire seemed to drink the ambient garage light. The quiet, rhythmic ticking of Joe’s unbranded mechanical watch kept the seconds as he stared at the heirloom.

Following his grandfather’s passing, Joe had concealed his position as the sole reigning Patriarch of the multi-trillion-dollar Sterling Family Office. He had chosen to live as a humble freelance consultant in the eyes of the public. The empire demanded ruthlessness, but Joe had wanted a partner who loved the man, not the crown. For three years, he cooked meals, maintained a modest facade, and quietly, invisibly authorized the secondary black cards and luxury leases required to support Chloe’s burgeoning social ambitions.

Today marked their third wedding anniversary. It was the official conclusion of his test. Today, he had intended to hand her the keys to the prototype, slip the sovereign ring onto her finger, and bestow upon her the title of Sterling Matriarch.

Beside him, the blue biometric LED on the Bay 001 pillar pulsed gently in rhythm with the encrypted proximity key in Joe’s pocket, recognizing the presence of its owner.

Then, the subterranean stillness was violently torn apart.

The deafening, raspy snarl of a high-revving twin-turbo V8 violently echoed down the entrance ramp. A neon-yellow Ferrari SF90 Stradale screeches around the concrete pillar at reckless speed. The tires howled, the rear end stepping out dangerously before the driver slammed the brakes, halting the gaudy vehicle mere inches from Oliver’s rolling steel toolbox.

The acrid scent of vaporized Michelin tire rubber and unburnt exhaust instantly choked the cedar-scented air.

The gullwing driver door lifted. Logan Vance stepped out onto the polished epoxy. His hair was styled into a slicked-back pompadour. An oversized gold Rolex Daytona caught the halogen light, contrasting loudly with his pastel pink tailored blazer and white designer loafers. He chewed gum insolently, his jaw working lazily as he jiggled the Ferrari key fob around his index finger.

He didn’t bother looking at Joe or Oliver yet. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door.

Chloe Sterling emerged. The piercing clack of her five-inch Christian Louboutin red-lacquered stilettos on the concrete broke the last remnants of the garage’s quiet dignity. She wore a cream Chanel tweed skirt suit, perfectly fitted, and oversized cat-eye sunglasses pushed up against her styled hair. Clutched tightly in her hand was an alligator Hermès Birkin 30 bag—a piece Joe recognized instantly. He had watched the transaction clear through his Centurion secondary card ledger only two weeks prior.

Logan strode toward Bay 001, finally noticing the two men standing near the unpainted carbon-fiber supercar. He pointed a manicured hand at Joe’s prototype.

“Hey, grease monkeys!” Logan’s nasal voice bounced harshly off the concrete. “Clear this kit-car scrap out of the only decent bay in this basement before I have valet tow it to a junkyard.”

Oliver bristled. He gripped his heavy steel wrench, taking a deliberate half-step forward. “This is Bay 001,” Oliver said, his tenor tight with restrained anger. “Deeded private property. Read the sign, pretty boy.”

Chloe lowered her sunglasses to sneer at the mechanic who dared speak to Logan. But her gaze drifted past Oliver and landed on the man in the charcoal trench coat.

She froze.

Her haughty smirk twisted instantly into visceral disgust, followed by a flash of deep, burning embarrassment. She released Logan’s arm and rushed forward, her voice rising into a shrill, grating fury.

“Joe?! What the hell are you doing here in those pathetic thrift-store clothes?” She gestured wildly around the VIP garage. “Are you stalking me now?!”

Joe looked at his wife of three years. His obsidian gaze remained completely flat, unblinking. His posture did not shift. He spoke with economical precision.

“Stalking you? Chloe, today is our third anniversary. I told you I had a surprise for you at the Grand Monarch.”

Chloe let out a harsh, theatrical laugh, pointing her manicured finger at the unpainted titanium and carbon-fiber marvel sitting in Bay 001. “Our anniversary? You call this homemade piece of welded trash a surprise?! You think I’d be caught dead in an alleyway kit car?”

Logan stepped up beside Chloe, his white loafers scuffing the epoxy. He wrapped an arm possessively around her waist. Chloe did not flinch, nor did she pull away. Instead, she leaned her weight into Logan, her Chanel jacket pressing against his pastel blazer. She smirked at Joe, her eyes filled with unvarnished contempt.

“Joe, don’t humiliate me in front of Mr. Vance,” Chloe sneered. “Logan is a real billionaire heir. His family runs Riveria’s top logistics conglomerate. You make in a year what he leaves as a valet tip! Move this junk before Logan ruins your life.”

Logan tapped Chloe’s hip playfully, his sideways smirk growing wider. “Babe, is this the broke consultant husband you were complaining about? Man, he looks like he cuts his own hair in a public bathroom mirror.”

Joe did not react to the insult. His eyes simply tracked the placement of Logan’s hand on Chloe’s waist, and then shifted to Chloe’s expression. She was entirely unbothered by her public infidelity, entirely absorbed in the rented luxury Logan paraded before her. Joe knew the truth. He knew Logan Vance Holdings was an indebted fraud, surviving on bridge loans. He knew he owned the Grand Monarch Hotel. And he knew, with cold certainty, that the woman standing before him had failed his test entirely.

Two burly private bodyguards in dark suits stepped out from behind the Ferrari, flanking Logan. They crossed their arms, trying to look intimidating in the sterile garage light.

Joe’s eyes narrowed by a fraction of an inch. His stance remained relaxed, hands resting loosely at his sides. But the air around him seemed to drop ten degrees, settling into an absolute, arctic stillness.

Logan turned back toward the Ferrari’s open driver door. He chuckled with sadistic entitlement. “I gave you sixty seconds to move your tin can, peasant. Since you won’t move it, I’ll clear the bay myself.”

Logan slid into the cockpit of the SF90. He left the gullwing door up, lowering the window to ensure they could hear him. He revved the engine straight into the redline. The exhaust spat a massive volley of crackling blue flames against the concrete wall, the sound deafening in the enclosed space.

Chloe stepped back to the nearest structural pillar, folding her arms across her Chanel jacket. She smiled, cheering over the roar of the V8. “Teach this freeloading loser a lesson, Logan! Show him what real money does to bugs like him!”

Unseen by Logan or Chloe, the Bay 001 illuminated platinum sensor had already scanned the Ferrari’s license plate. It logged the unauthorized intrusion and was actively transmitting an encrypted alert directly to the Sterling Family Office security dispatch.

Logan shifted the Ferrari into reverse. He pinned the throttle to the floorboard and dropped the clutch.

The ear-splitting shriek of high-RPM tires echoed like a bomb blast. A thick cloud of white tire smoke billowed violently across the floor, the vibration shaking the tools in Oliver’s chest. The neon-yellow rear bumper of the Ferrari hurtled backward at thirty miles per hour, aiming straight for the hand-crafted titanium front fascia of Joe’s priceless masterpiece. Logan’s vicious laughter echoed over the mechanical scream, tearing through the smoke.
