Chapter 5: “The Wedding Is Over”

Preston Montgomery dropped entirely to his knees on the polished parquet floor. The arrogance, the booming baritone, the imperious southern patriarch—all of it had melted away, leaving only a pathetic, sniveling old man drowning in the wreckage of his own hubris.

He crawled across the floorboards toward Arthur’s feet, his trembling hands reaching out to grasp the hem of Arthur’s charcoal trousers.

“Arthur… Chairman Sterling… I beg of you!” Preston sobbed, tears cutting through the grease of his pomade and makeup. “We can work this out! You love Clara! You’re going to be family! Think of our family name! Just forgive the ground rent and extend a ten-million-dollar credit line from your trust… I’ll give you whatever you want!”

Arthur took a single step back, denying Preston even the privilege of touching his shoes. Arthur’s face remained an unreadable mask of stoic, sorrowful dignity.

“You never cared about family, Preston,” Arthur said softly, his voice cutting through the hushed hall. “When you served me that prenuptial agreement on a silver platter ten minutes ago, you weren’t protecting your daughter. You were trying to rob me of my dignity to feed your dying ego.”

Clara stepped forward, her tears drying, replaced by a cold, searing fire that transformed her delicate features. She looked down at the groveling man who had controlled and terrorized her entire life.

“All those years…” Clara whispered, her voice carrying an icy fury that silenced her father’s wailing. “You told me I had to sacrifice my passion for art, that I had to marry into money to save the Montgomery honor. You weren’t preserving our heritage, Father. You were selling me off like an old cargo container to pay for your gambling debts!”

“Clara, darling, please! Tell him to stop them!” Preston pleaded.

“I have nothing left to say to you,” Clara said, stepping past him without a second glance.

Arthur turned his gaze toward Clara. For a long moment, they looked into each other’s eyes. In Clara’s emerald gaze, there was gratitude, profound respect, and deep heartbreak.

Arthur reached down to his own left hand. He slowly slipped off the simple platinum engagement band he had worn for the past six months.

He took Clara’s trembling hand, turned it palm-up, and placed the ring gently into her fingers.

“You are a gifted artist and a woman of profound grace, Clara,” Arthur spoke with tender sincerity. “When I came to prune these roses, I fell in love with your genuine spirit. But a marriage that begins in the shadow of this ballroom’s poison would only slowly destroy us both. You need time to find out who Clara is without the Montgomery shadow.”

Clara closed her fingers tightly around the cold platinum, nodding slowly through fresh, cathartic tears. “Thank you, Arthur. For giving me the truth. For giving me my freedom.”

Arthur gave her a soft, respectful nod. He turned to Julian Vance and the Federal Marshals.

“Execute the seal on the property. Secure the historical botanical greenhouses. The rehearsal dinner is concluded.”

As Arthur turned and walked down the central aisle toward the grand French doors, the one hundred and fifty high-society guests parted like the Red Sea, bowing their heads in silent, reverent awe. Behind him, the wails of Preston Montgomery faded into the distance as marshals escorted the disgraced patriarch out into the dark Lowcountry night.
