Chapter 3: Setting Down the Crystal Glass

The Landscaper’s Rehearsal Dinner Reckoning 3 of 6

When Arthur Sterling re-entered the grand ballroom of Magnolia Crest, a hush fell over the one hundred and fifty high-society guests. Clara followed closely behind him, her head bowed in anxious distress.

Preston Montgomery leaned against the mahogany head table, swirling his glass with an arrogant smirk plastered across his flushed face.

“Well, well! Look who decided to crawl back!” Preston announced loudly, waving his arm toward Arthur. “I assume you called your mama to tell her you’re finally going to be rich? Bradley, hand the boy the pen so we can get on with dessert.”

Arthur ignored the attorney holding the gold fountain pen.

Holding his vintage leather document case in his left hand, Arthur walked with slow, deliberate steps straight toward the speaker’s podium at the center of the raised dais.

The guests watched in bewilderment as the “landscaper” ascended the stage. Arthur took the crystal glass of water resting on the mahogany lectern, lifted it, and set it down with a firm, deliberate click directly over Preston’s microphone receiver.

Arthur adjusted the microphone. His hazel eyes swept across the crowded hall with an aura of supreme, unshakeable command that instantly made the smirks fade from the faces of Charleston’s wealthiest socialites.

“For the past eight months,” Arthur began, his gravelly voice projecting effortlessly into every corner of the ballroom, “I have walked every acre of Magnolia Crest. I have pruned the heritage tea roses, restored the 18th-century stone irrigation conduits, and tested the acidic pH of the marsh soil with my own hands. And in all that time, Preston Montgomery has referred to this estate as his private kingdom.”

Preston’s face twisted into an impatient scowl. “What is this nonsense? Get off the stage and sign the contract!”

Arthur opened the brass buckle of his leather folio. With practiced grace, he pulled out a thick parchment document bound in aged green silk ribbon, bearing the official gold-embossed seal of the United States Department of the Interior and the State of South Carolina.

“Five years ago,” Arthur continued calmly, “Montgomery Shipping incurred massive catastrophic losses following a series of fraudulent offshore container investments. To prevent public bankruptcy and criminal liquidation, Preston Montgomery quietly sold the master land patent, the historic manor deed, and all four hundred surrounding acres of Magnolia Crest.”

Gasps exploded across the room. Prestons’s attorney Bradley Vance froze, his face draining of all color.

“That’s a lie!” Preston roared, lunging toward the podium. “Magnolia Crest has been in my family for four generations! Guards, remove this lunatic!”

None of the security guards moved.

Arthur unfolded the certified archival deed, laying it flat under the podium’s spotlight.

“The buyer,” Arthur stated with crystalline precision, “was the Southern Heritage Conservancy—a three-billion-dollar historical land endowment. Under the terms of the sale-leaseback agreement, Preston Montgomery was permitted to reside here as a tenant only so long as he paid fifty thousand dollars in monthly ground rent and maintained the botanical integrity of the property.”

Arthur paused, his gaze locking onto Preston’s petrified eyes.

“Preston has defaulted on his lease payments for forty-eight consecutive months. And as the founder, sole trustee, and majority chairman of the Southern Heritage Conservancy… I am not your daughter’s penniless suitor, Preston.”

Arthur tapped the gold signature on the master deed.

“I am your landlord. And I own every single inch of ground you stand upon.”
