Chapter 2: Beneath the Spanish Moss

The Landscaper’s Rehearsal Dinner Reckoning 2 of 6

Preston Montgomery threw his head back and let out a boisterous, mocking roar of laughter that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of Magnolia Crest.

“Am I certain?” Preston chuckled, wiping a tear of derision from his eye. “Listen to him, gentlemen! The dirt gardener is asking if I’m certain! Look around you, Sterling. Look at these white Corinthian columns, these five-hundred-year-old live oaks, these antique Austrian chandeliers. My family has owned this Lowcountry soil since before the Civil War. I dictate the terms here. You have two minutes to sign, or the security guards will throw your belongings into the swamp.”

Clara stood up so abruptly her mahogany chair scraped loudly against the polished parquet floor. Tears of shame and fury sparkled in her emerald eyes.

“Stop it, Father! That is enough!” Clara’s voice trembled, but she held her chin high. “Arthur is a man of honor! He spent months bringing these dead gardens back to life with his own hands. You invited him here as my future husband, not to parade him like a criminal!”

Preston’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, venomous glare. He leaned across the table, his voice dropping into a vicious, sibilant hiss that only Clara and Arthur could hear.

“You insolent little girl,” Preston spat. “Montgomery Shipping is negotiating an international bailout with the Savannah harbor consortium. If you think I’m going to let some penniless tree trimmer stain our family name and jeopardize my standing, you are dead wrong. You will marry a man who signs this agreement, or I will strip your name from every family trust, revoke your art studio lease, and leave you with nothing. Sit down and shut your mouth!”

Clara flinched as though she had been slapped. Her shoulders sagged, her fingers clutching the lace of her gown in helpless despair.

Arthur stood up smoothly. His presence was imposing—tall, solid, and radiating a calm, immovable gravity that made Preston take half a step back despite himself.

Arthur placed a gentle, reassuring hand on Clara’s trembling shoulder. “Sit down, Clara. Don’t waste your breath.”

He turned to the room, picked up his worn vintage leather document folio from beside his chair, and gave a slight, dignified nod to the gaping guests. “Excuse me for five minutes, ladies and gentlemen. I have a brief phone call to make.”

“Running away already, landscaper?” Preston jeered after him as Arthur walked toward the French doors. “Make sure you use the servant’s gate on your way out!”

Arthur stepped out onto the wide, marble-paved veranda. The warm, humid Lowcountry night enveloped him in the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine and damp marsh grass. Above, the colossal Spanish moss draped from the live oaks swayed gently in the Atlantic breeze.

Arthur pulled a sleek encrypted satellite phone from his charcoal jacket and dialed a single direct line.

The call connected on the first ring.

“Good evening, Chairman Sterling,” a crisp, professional voice answered.

“Julian,” Arthur said quietly, his voice cutting through the distant chorus of cicadas. “Are you at the Charleston regional office?”

“Yes, Arthur. We have the certified archival land deeds, the 1912 Ashley River preservation patents, and the forensic banking audits ready as requested.”

Arthur looked back through the glowing glass doors at Preston Montgomery, who was currently refilling his bourbon glass, laughing loudly with his wealthy cronies while Clara wept quietly into a linen napkin.

“Bring the documents to Magnolia Crest immediately, Julian,” Arthur commanded, his hazel eyes darkening with steel resolve. “Bring federal court marshals and the regional bank assessors. Preston Montgomery wants to discuss land and ownership tonight. Let’s give him a masterclass.”

As Arthur hung up, the French door clicked open behind him. Clara stepped out onto the veranda, her eyes red, her hands shaking.

“Arthur… please,” Clara whispered, stepping close to him. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he was going to ambush you like that. Just… just sign it to keep the peace. We can move away after the wedding. We don’t need his money.”

Arthur looked down at her with gentle, sorrowful clarity. He reached out and brushed a tear from her cheek.

“Pride built on stolen ground is just a fragile lie, Clara,” Arthur murmured. “Your father doesn’t own this plantation. And tonight, you’re going to learn what your family’s empire is truly made of.”
