Chapter 6: Bloodline and Stone

The Housekeeper Who Stole My Manor 6 of 6

The silence inside the grand ballroom was so profound that the hum of the backup cooling fans sounded like jet turbines.

Three hundred socialites, bank executives, state senators, and live-broadcast camera crews parted down the center aisle, stepping back against the floral arrangements as though a monarch were entering the cathedral.

Hailey Kaplan stepped across the threshold.

She wore a custom midnight-blue velvet gown that fell in clean, architectural lines to the floor. Her dark hair was sculpted into an elegant chignon, framing cheekbones as sharp and proud as her mother’s. Around her throat, blazing with unmistakable, royal brilliance under the tactical spotlights, rested *The Star of St. Jude*—the 45-carat Burmese sapphire necklace.

She walked with measured, unhurried grace down the scarlet carpet, her gaze fixed entirely on the dais.

Beside her, District Attorney Marcus Sterling—uncle to Candice’s fleeing fiancé—took the microphone from the master of ceremonies.

“Pursuant to warrants issued this afternoon by the State Supreme Court,” the District Attorney announced, his booming baritone echoing across every television broadcast in the state, “the State of New York executes the immediate arrest of Deidra Vance and Candice Vance on twenty-four felony counts, including Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Criminal Possession of Forged Instruments, Scheme to Defraud, and Attempted Murder by Chemical Poisoning.”

“No!” Deidra shrieked.

The housekeeper’s face contorted into something wild and feral. The three-year illusion of high-society elegance shattered entirely. She lunged off the dais, grabbing a heavy champagne magnum from an ice bucket, smashing the glass base against the podium, and screaming with venomous fury:

“I raised you, Hailey! I bled for this house! Your mother was weak, and your grandfather was a tyrant! I spent thirty years on my knees scrubbing your marble! This estate owes me! This manor belongs to ME!”

Before Deidra could take three steps toward Hailey, two state troopers flanked her, knocking the shattered bottle from her hand and pinning her face-down against the marble floor.

*CLICK. CLICK.*

Steel handcuffs clamped tightly around Deidra’s wrists.

Candice collapsed to her knees on the dais. The diamond tiara fell from her blonde head, tumbling down the three carpeted steps and rolling to a stop against Hailey’s velvet hem.

Tears of pure humiliation and terror poured down Candice’s cheeks, black streaks of mascara cutting through her heavy contour. She reached out trembling hands, crawling forward on the red carpet until her fingers touched the fabric of Hailey’s skirt.

“Hailey… please!” Candice sobbed, her voice breaking into pathetic, desperate shrieks. “Please, Hailey! It was my mother! She planned it all! She made me post those videos! She made me do it! I’ll give back the dresses, I’ll give back the car! I’ll work as your maid! I’ll scrub the floors like my mother did! Just don’t let them send me to prison! Please!”

Hailey stopped. She looked down at the weeping girl with eyes as calm and cold as an arctic sea.

With a slow, deliberate motion, Hailey gathered the hem of her midnight-blue gown and stepped backward, breaking Candice’s grip.

“A maid honors the home she serves,” Hailey said, her voice quiet, clear, and perfectly audible to every microphone in the room. “You were never a maid, Candice. You were a parasite who mistook my family’s charity for your own entitlement. And mercy was already paid in full when I funded your education.”

Hailey looked over at the state marshals. “Remove them.”

The troopers hauled Deidra to her feet, twisting her arms behind her back as she spat curses and sobbed hysterically. Two female officers pulled Candice up by her elbows, her couture ivory dress stained with dirt and spilled champagne, dragging her toward the heavy double doors.

Flashbulbs exploded in blinding waves. Every media outlet captured the moment: the false heiress of Crestview Heights, stripped of her stolen tiara, led away in handcuffs for the entire nation to see.

Within forty minutes, the ballroom emptied.

The socialites slipped out in quiet shame; the reporters dispersed to broadcast the breaking scandal; the catering staff packed away the lavish decorations.

The estate grew still.

Julian Cross stepped up beside Hailey, holding a brass screwdriver in one hand and Eleanor Kaplan’s original oil portrait in the other.

“The Delaware Chancery Court just entered a permanent summary order,” Julian said quietly. “The deeds are voided. All frozen funds are returning to the trust account. The estate is secure, Hailey.”

“Thank you, Julian,” Hailey murmured.

Together, they walked to the grand fireplace. Julian carefully lifted the heavy frame and mounted the brass brackets.

Eleanor Kaplan’s serene, warm portrait looked down upon the hearth once more, her painted hazel eyes glowing gently in the warm light of the crackling fire.

Hailey picked up the fallen diamond tiara from the floor, set it reverently on the mantelpiece beneath her mother’s likeness, and poured two glasses of sparkling mineral water from the silver tray.

She handed one to Julian and raised hers toward the portrait.

“To the Kaplan legacy,” Hailey whispered.

“To the true queen of Crestview Heights,” Julian replied, clinking his glass.

Outside, the storm had passed. The night sky over the Atlantic was clear, silent, and free.
