Chapter 5: The Gala of Stolen Crowns
Night fell over Crestview Heights under a clear, star-studded sky, but the atmosphere around Kaplan Manor crackled with the electric tension of an impending storm.
A three-hundred-foot scarlet carpet stretched from the iron gates up the sweeping circular driveway, flanked by towering gas flambeaux and dozens of uniformed valets parking Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royces, and Bentleys. Media camera crews from society television channels and lifestyle magazines jostled behind velvet ropes, their flashes illuminating the continuous parade of high-society guests.
Inside the grand ballroom, the extravagance bordered on imperial decadence.
Ten thousand white Dutch hydrangeas and cascading orchids masked the antique limestone walls. A twelve-tier crystal champagne pyramid towered in the center of the room, reflecting the light of four restored crystal chandeliers. A thirty-piece chamber orchestra played soft waltzes in the balcony alcove.
Standing near the grand dais, holding court among bank presidents and state senators, was Deidra Vance.
She wore a custom gold-lame ballgown with a trailing train, her silver hair styled in a regal updo topped with an antique diamond comb. Despite her outward smile, her eyes darted constantly toward the entrance, and the champagne glass in her manicured hand trembled.
“You look magnificent, Deidra,” murmured Arthur Sterling Senior, the patriarch of the Sterling Private Equity empire. “We are all looking forward to Candice’s big announcement tonight. Merging the Sterling investment funds with the Kaplan real estate trust will make our families the undisputed rulers of the eastern seaboard.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” Deidra smiled, her voice tight. “Candice has worked so hard to… preserve our heritage.”
Just then, the orchestra struck a dramatic fanfare.
Candice Vance appeared at the top of the grand marble staircase.
The ballroom erupted into polite applause. Candice looked breathtaking in a bespoke ivory silk faille gown embroidered with thousands of micro-pearls. On her head rested Eleanor Kaplan’s 1920 diamond tiara—which Deidra had hastily retrieved from a local pawn loan before the accounts froze.
Candice glided down the staircase, leaning on the arm of young Arthur Sterling Junior, her handsome, dimpled fiancé. She smiled radiantly for the flashing press cameras, hiding the terror that had consumed her since yesterday’s disaster at Sovereign Jewelers. *It doesn’t matter that the auction funds were frozen,* she told herself frantically. *Once I announce my engagement to Arthur and the cameras broadcast my ownership of the manor, the Sterling family will cover all our debts. No one will ever believe that vagrant Hailey.*
Candice stepped onto the dais and took the golden wireless microphone from the master of ceremonies.
The orchestra fell silent. Three hundred guests turned their attention toward the stage, raising their crystal flutes.
“Distinguished guests, family, and lifelong friends,” Candice began, her voice projecting through the acoustic hall with sweet, practiced poise. “Tonight, as I celebrate my twenty-second birthday, I stand in the home that has witnessed generations of greatness. Many of you know the tragic rumors surrounding the Kaplan bloodline. But tonight, I am here to tell you that this estate will never fall into ruin. Through official Delaware decrees, Kaplan Manor has been passed into my stewardship.”
The crowd murmured in admiration. Deidra closed her eyes, exhaling a quiet sigh of relief, tasting the sweet, final victory of their three-year ambition.
“And so,” Candice continued, her voice swelling with triumphant pride, “to mark this new golden chapter, I am proud to announce that from this night forward, this historic estate will no longer be known as Kaplan Manor. We christen it—*Vance Manor!*”
Several older guests looked around uneasily at the brazen announcement, but the younger socialites erupted into cheers. Candice raised her glass high into the air.
“To the Vance dynasty!” she shouted.
*SNAP.*
Without warning, a deafening electrical pop exploded from the utility basement.
The four massive crystal chandeliers went black. The orchestral microphones gave a high-pitched screech and died. The gas flambeaux outside flickered out.
The grand ballroom was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
Gasps and shrieks of confusion echoed across the hall. Guests stumbled against cocktail tables; crystal flutes shattered on the marble floor.
“Mom? What happened to the power?” Candice cried out into the dark, her microphone dead. “Security! Get the backup generators online!”
*CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.*
A series of heavy, pneumatic thuds vibrated through the floorboards. The computerized heavy iron storm shutters dropped over every ground-floor window, and the massive front oak doors slammed shut, their magnetic locks sealing with a heavy, final hiss.
“The doors are locked!” a senator yelled from the rear. “What is the meaning of this?”
Suddenly, the hum of independent emergency power thrummed through the walls.
Twin tactical floodlights on the balcony snapped on, bathing the central dais in blinding, harsh white light.
Simultaneously, the sixty-foot ultra-high-definition LED presentation screen behind Candice flickered to life.
Instead of Candice’s planned birthday tribute video, the screen displayed the official digital emblem of the **Metropolitan Police Department White Collar Crime Task Force** and the **Office of the State District Attorney**.
A crystal-clear, 4K audio-video recording began playing at maximum volume through the emergency public address speakers.
On the massive screen, eighty times larger than life, was Deidra Vance standing in the private study forty-eight hours ago.
The camera—recorded from the hidden lens in Eleanor Kaplan’s antique brass clock—showed Deidra slipping the amber bottle from her velvet dress, uncapping it, and dropping four drops of viscous liquid into the Limoges teacup.
The audio was horrifyingly crisp:
*“I gave thirty years of my youth to this family… And what did you give us? A measly charity allowance? This manor is ours now. The deeds have been filed. And tonight, a tragic heart failure will ensure you never contest the Vance inheritance.”*
The entire ballroom froze in petrified, suffocating horror.
Deidra Vance dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered on the dais, splashing gold across her white satin slippers. Her face turned an ash-gray color, her mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water.
“Turn it off!” Candice shrieked, clawing at the cables beneath the podium in a frenzy of absolute hysteria. “Turn it off! That’s fake! It’s an AI deepfake! Arthur, tell them to turn it off!”
Arthur Sterling Junior pulled his arm out of Candice’s grasp, backing away from her on the stage with sheer disgust and horror in his eyes.
The video cut to high-resolution forensic scans: twenty-four bank routing sheets detailing $14.2M in stolen funds, pawnshop CCTV footage of Deidra selling heirloom jewelry, and Delaware court affidavits stamped with the words: **FRAUDULENT CONVEYANCE — VOID AB INITIO.**
*THUD. THUD.*
The magnetic locks on the grand double entrance doors deactivated.
The heavy oak portals swung inward.
Framed in the doorway, backed by twenty armed state troopers and federal marshals with drawn tactical gear, stood three figures: the State District Attorney, Julian Cross, and the true mistress of Crestview Heights.
