Chapter 4: The Golden Auction

The Housekeeper Who Stole My Manor 4 of 6

The private salon of Sovereign Jewelers was shrouded in deep crimson velvet and muted amber lighting. Located inside an unmarked limestone townhouse on King Street, only seventy-five numbered paddles had been issued to the world’s most discreet billionaires, private gallery curators, and international antiquities brokers.

In the first row of gilded mahogany chairs sat Candice Vance.

She wore a striking scarlet Saint Laurent power suit with oversized gold buttons, her blonde hair swept into a high ponytail, her manicured fingers tapping impatiently against the leather armrest. Beside her sat two eager fashion journalists she had personally invited to document what she called her “strategic asset reallocation.”

“When the lot closes,” Candice whispered loudly to the journalists, making sure the nearby hedge fund titans could hear, “I’ll be wiring the proceeds directly to my new foundation for heritage architecture preservation. It’s important for true old-money families to give back.”

Twenty feet above the auction floor, behind a screen of smoked, soundproof glass, Hailey Kaplan sat in the shadows of Private Box 88.

She wore a crisp black cashmere turtleneck, her dark hair pinned back, her hazel eyes fixed with predatory calm upon the back of Candice’s head. Julian Cross stood directly behind her chair, a leather folder open in his hand, an encrypted satellite earpiece connecting him to both the auction house’s executive director and the State Asset Forfeiture Task Force.

“The auction house management verified the lot twenty minutes ago,” Julian whispered. “Candice presented a fraudulent bill of sale purportedly signed by you in 2022. Sovereign’s compliance department was suspicious, but because Silas Vance provided Delaware notarized provenance, they allowed the lot on the condition of immediate post-sale verification.”

“Let the hammer fall,” Hailey said softly. “Paddle 88 is live.”

On the central stage, the velvet curtain parted.

A spotlight illuminated a rotating velvet pedestal displaying Lot 42: *The Star of St. Jude.*

A collective murmur of awe swept through the room. The necklace was an undisputed masterpiece of 19th-century platinum filigree, set with three hundred flawless round brilliant diamonds framing a mesmerizing 45-carat royal blue Burmese sapphire that pulsed with deep, oceanic fire.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the auctioneer announced, adjusting his half-moon spectacles. “Lot forty-two. A historically significant private heirloom from the Kaplan Estate collection, presented with complete Delaware provenance. We open bidding at three million dollars.”

A paddle went up in the third row.

“Three million to the gentleman from Geneva. Do I have three point five?”

“Three point five,” signaled an elderly shipping magnate on the aisle.

“Four million,” barked a representative from a London private museum.

Candice leaned forward in her seat, her eyes dilating with pure, unfiltered greed. A radiant, arrogant smile spread across her lips. In her mind, she was already dividing the millions: eight hundred thousand to pay off the furious gala florists and caterers, two million for a new yacht slip, and five million into her personal checking account before her fiancé Arthur arrived for the party.

“Five million dollars,” the auctioneer called out, looking around the room. “Five million from the floor. Do I hear five point five?”

The room paused. Five million was a formidable sum even for royal jewels.

The auctioneer raised his wooden gavel. “Five million once… five million twice…”

High above the floor, Hailey tapped the side of her armrest.

Julian pressed the digital bidding transmitter on the private console.

A crystal-clear chime rang through the hall, and the digital display above the stage lit up in bold gold numerals:

**BOX 88 — $7,000,000**

Candice gasped, spinning around in her seat to stare up at the mirrored glass of Box 88. The glass was entirely opaque, reflecting only the shimmering lights of the chandeliers below.

The auctioneer’s eyebrows shot up. “Seven million dollars from Private Box eighty-eight! A direct jump to seven million!”

The London museum representative hesitated, consulted his phone, and raised his paddle. “Seven point five!”

Chime.

**BOX 88 — $9,000,000**

A sharp intake of breath rippled across the room. Several collectors chuckled in disbelief; two hedge fund billionaires shook their heads and set their paddles down.

“Nine million from Box eighty-eight!” the auctioneer declared, his voice trembling with excitement. “Are there any further bids on Lot forty-two?”

The floor remained dead silent.

“Nine million once… nine million twice…”

Candice gripped her armrests so tightly her knuckles turned white, holding her breath, a feeling of intoxicating, supreme triumph flooding her veins. *Nine million dollars.* She was untouchable.

“Sold! For nine million dollars to Private Box eighty-eight!”

The gavel slammed down with a resounding *CRACK.*

Candice jumped to her feet, laughing out loud, kissing the cheeks of her bewildered journalist companions as the room applauded politely.

“Excuse me, Miss Vance?”

A severe, unsmiling woman in a dark tailored suit approached Candice from the side aisle, holding a leather clipboard.

“Ah, the escrow documents!” Candice beamed, tossing her hair. “Take me to the private settlement suite immediately. I want the wire transfer initiated before the banking window closes.”

“Right this way, Miss Vance,” the woman said smoothly.

Candice strutted down the carpeted private corridor toward VIP Settlement Suite B, her high heels clicking with supreme arrogance. She threw open the double frosted glass doors, expecting champagne flutes and the auction house president.

Instead, the room was occupied by four men.

Two were armed federal marshals in dark windbreakers. The third was the Deputy Director of the State White Collar Crime Unit.

And standing behind the broad mahogany conference table, holding a thick file of certified judicial restraining orders, was Julian Cross.

Candice froze. Her smile vanished.

“What is this?” Candice stammered, looking around frantically. “Where is the president? Who are you people?”

“Good afternoon, Candice,” Julian said, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and completely devoid of emotion. “My name is Julian Cross. I am Senior Legal Counsel to the Kaplan Group Holdings and the sole authorized trustee of the Eleanor Kaplan Estate.”

“You’re… you’re that corporate lawyer,” Candice said, backing toward the door, her voice trembling. “My mother told me about you. You have no authority here! This necklace was gifted to my family! The auction just closed for nine million dollars! That money is mine!”

“The bidder in Box eighty-eight was Hailey Kaplan,” Julian replied calmly.

Candice’s jaw dropped. The blood drained from her face until she was as white as a bedsheet. “No… no, that’s impossible! Hailey is dead! She died in Africa! My mother said—”

“Your mother tried to poison her last night,” Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a chilling register that made the two federal marshals step forward. “And the nine million dollars you were expecting has been placed under an immediate federal asset freeze pursuant to an emergency order issued two hours ago by the State Superior Court.”

Julian gestured to the glass case on the table, where the Star of St. Jude sapphire necklace was being placed into a velvet evidence lockbox.

“The necklace has been impounded as stolen physical evidence in an active felony grand larceny investigation,” Julian continued. “Furthermore, every personal bank account in your name and Deidra Vance’s name has been frozen nationwide. You have zero liquidity. You have zero lines of credit. And you have approximately twenty-eight hours before the grand gala at Kaplan Manor.”

Candice clutched her head, hyperventilating, tears of sheer panic ruining her heavy mascara.

“You can’t do this to me!” she screamed, her voice cracking. “I have three hundred guests coming tomorrow! The press is coming! The Sterling family is coming! If the caterers don’t get paid, they’ll cancel the entire gala! I will be ruined!”

Julian closed his ledger with a sharp, decisive thud.

“Then I suggest you enjoy your party, Candice,” Julian said coldly, looking down at her with pure disdain. “Because it will be the very last party you ever attend.”
