Volume 1, Chapter 5 — The Centennial Gala & The Red Carpet Clash

The Hidden Founder of Aether Heights 5 of 6

Twilight turned the Texas sky to a deep sapphire over Lady Bird Lake. The Aether Spire, a two-story architectural glass facade glowing in warm golden uplighting, stood as the crown jewel of downtown Austin. A two-hundred-foot crimson carpet unfurled across the wet limestone pavers of the port-cochère, flanked by popping flashbulbs and roaring television crews.

A white Rolls-Royce Phantom crunched onto the limestone. Rick Sterling stepped out into the blinding glare of fifty cameras. He wore a velvet tuxedo jacket, projecting false dominance as he waved to the press. Selene Harris emerged beside him, her fifty-thousand-dollar emerald Saint Laurent gown sweeping the carpet.

“Mr. Sterling!” a reporter shouted. “Are you announcing the Phase II acquisition tonight?”

Rick flashed a predatory grin into the broadcast microphones. “Sterling Developments will claim Phase II tonight. The Aether Spire is ours.”

Selene spotted Eleanor Caldwell, the undisputed matriarch of Austin high society. She rushed over, deliberately angling her left hand to catch the light on her five-carat diamond ring. “Eleanor! So glad you could make it. Rick and I will be hosting in the penthouse very soon.”

The press line suddenly fell dead silent. The cameras pivoted en masse.

An armored midnight-sapphire Rolls-Royce Spectre glided to a halt at the edge of the carpet. The driver opened the rear door. Scarlett Vance stepped out. She wore an ivory Celine architectural gown, her presence commanding immediate gravity.

She paused, turning back to the Spectre. She extended her hand.

Kenneth Harris stepped onto the carpet.

He wore an immaculate, bespoke midnight-navy Tom Ford tuxedo. A platinum Patek Philippe gleamed at his wrist. His posture was unshakeable, his expression carved from stone. He did not look at the cameras; he looked through them.

Across the carpet, Selene’s hand froze. The Perrier-Jouët champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the cold stone. She stared, her mind short-circuiting as the paparazzi swarmed Scarlett and Ken, entirely abandoning Rick and Selene.

Inside the thirty-foot-ceiling Grand Centennial Ballroom, five hundred dignitaries mingled beneath massive Austrian crystal chandeliers. A forty-piece Austin Philharmonic orchestra played a soft waltz. The dark reflection of the skyline mirrored off the glass walls suspended over the lake.

Selene stormed across the marble floor. She shoved past tech titans and state senators, her face flushed with hysterical panic. She intercepted Ken and Scarlett near the VIP pedestal.

“What are you doing here?” Selene shrieked, her voice cutting brutally through the orchestral waltz. The cloying scent of her French tuberose perfume had turned sharp with nervous sweat. “Did you sneak in to stalk me? Is this a joke to you?”

Rick materialized behind her, his face dark with rage. He sneered at Scarlett Vance. “Ms. Vance. I didn’t know your firm was in the charity business. You brought a broke rideshare driver who was living out of black trash bags two days ago as your arm candy?”

Ken did not react. He held a crystal tumbler of Pellegrino. He took a slow, calm sip. The ice clinked sharply in the silence that had radiated outward from their confrontation. Texas billionaires and media anchors were watching.

“Lower your voice, Selene,” Scarlett warned coldly. “Before you destroy whatever dignity you have left.”

“I want his rented ID!” Selene demanded, her hands trembling. “He doesn’t belong here!”

Rick snapped his fingers. Arthur Vance, the Chief of Private Security, flanked by four armed guards, stepped out of the shadows. “Arthur,” Rick barked. “This man is a criminal trespasser. Handcuff him and drag him out into the rain.”

Arthur Vance frowned, looking at Ken. “Sir. I’m going to have to ask for your VIP accreditation.”

Ken handed his Pellegrino to a passing waiter. He reached inside his tuxedo jacket. The ballroom held its breath.

Ken did not pull out a paper ticket. He withdrew a matte-gray milled titanium key fob, laser-etched with a Fibonacci spiral.

He stepped past Rick, walking calmly to the central VIP pedestal. He placed the titanium fob onto the sapphire glass and pressed his thumb against the micro-sensor.

The console flared with a blinding emerald light.

A deep, harmonic dual-frequency chime resonated through the entire ballroom’s acoustic speaker network, silencing the orchestra instantly.

Above the security arch, a twenty-foot digital display blazed to life:

`[AETHER MASTER INFRASTRUCTURE // SOVEREIGN LEVEL 0]` `IDENTITY VERIFIED: KENNETH HARRIS` `TITLE: MASTER TRUSTEE & 62% SUPER-VOTING EQUITY HOLDER` `ACCESS LEVEL: UNCONDITIONAL MASTER OVERRIDE`

The blood drained from Arthur Vance’s face. He violently shoved Rick Sterling aside, dropping into a deep, ninety-degree bow before Ken. “Master Founder… forgive the delay.”

A collective gasp swept through the five hundred dignitaries.

Selene stumbled backward into a cocktail table. Glasses crashed to the marble. “No,” she whispered, her eyes wide with horror, fixated on the emerald display. “No, the machine is broken. He’s just a driver…”

Rick froze in place. Cold sweat drenched his velvet collar. He tried to speak, but his throat had seized.

Scarlett Vance ascended the white marble stage steps. She tapped the broadcast microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Scarlett announced, her voice echoing across the silent room. “Allow me to introduce the sole architect, the founder, and the sixty-two percent controlling owner of Aether Heights… Mr. Kenneth Harris.”

Blinding master stage spotlights swiveled, cutting through the darkness, and locked onto Ken.

He adjusted his cuffs, his face an impenetrable mask of absolute sovereign command, and began his ascent up the marble steps to address the city he owned.
