Volume 1, Chapter 1 — The Disdainful Eviction

The Hidden Founder of Aether Heights 1 of 6

The thirty-fourth floor of The Austonian smelled of wet wool and ozone. The high-speed elevator doors glided open with a whisper, but Kenneth Harris did not step immediately onto the plush hallway carpet. He stood inside the cabin, the heavy, rain-dampened kraft-paper takeout bags from L’Oca d’Oro burning cold against his knuckles. Outside the panoramic glass walls, a violent Texas thunderstorm tore across Lady Bird Lake, white-purple lightning flashing against the limestone grid of downtown Austin.

Ken stepped out. Four heavy, 55-gallon black Husky contractor garbage bags lined the corridor outside Unit 34B. One had split open, disgorging his university structural engineering texts, a set of drafting calipers, and two charcoal work shirts.

The heavy walnut entrance door was propped ajar with an empty vintage champagne bottle.

Ken paused. He felt the wet chill soaking through his canvas Carhartt jacket. He took a measured breath, lowering his heart rate to fifty-five beats per minute. He did not drop the butternut squash agnolotti. He did not lose control. He simply pushed the door open.

Inside the Calacatta marble kitchen, the air was heavy with the cloying scent of French tuberose perfume and the pungent, unmistakable acridity of a Partagás cigar. Rick Sterling leaned against the island, wrapped in a navy pinstripe suit, swirling a measure of 2012 Dom Pérignon in a crystal flute. Selene stood beside him, draped in an emerald backless cocktail dress.

She turned as the door clicked shut. Her eyes narrowed in cold irritation. “You’re late.”

She snatched a thick manila legal folder from the marble and tossed it across the island. It slid, stopping inches from the damp takeout bags Ken placed down.

Rick chuckled, tapping his cigar ash into one of the anniversary saucers. He looked Ken up and down, taking in the soaked canvas and damp boots. “Rain surge hitting downtown tonight, Kenny? What’s that net you—an extra four dollars an hour? Good money for a rideshare driver.” Rick reached out, tapping two fingers against Ken’s wet chest. “Don’t ruin the hardwood, pal.”

Ken looked at Rick’s hand, then at his face. His voice was a low, steady resonance. “It’s our anniversary, Selene.”

Selene let out a sharp, brittle laugh. She raised her left hand, brandishing a new, five-carat cushion-cut diamond ring that caught the recessed LED lights overhead. “It’s the night I correct an embarrassing mistake. Three years, Ken. Three years I’ve waited for you to do something, build something. But you’re just a driver. You’re a nobody. Rick is closing on the Phase II Aether Heights buyout tomorrow night.”

Rick leaned forward, the gold glint of his Rolex Daytona flashing. “Sign the uncontested divorce waiver, Harris. Sign it now, or I have building security throw you and those trash bags down to the curb.”

Ken said nothing. The silence in the room stretched, punctuated only by the heavy thunder vibrating the panoramic glass walls. He reached out and opened the manila folder. His eyes scanned the document. His mind, conditioned to dissect load-bearing structural tolerances and billion-dollar Delaware corporate syndications, moved effortlessly through the legalese.

He stopped at Section 14: Comprehensive Waiver of Marital Estate, Private Trusts, Future Intellectual Property, and Severance Rights.

It was a predatory overreach. Selene had drafted this to take the condo furniture, the two leased cars, and the fractional bank accounts, leaving Ken with zero. But in her greed, she had signed away any future claim. She had legally severed herself from all Delaware trusts or assets connected to Kenneth Harris. She was disinheriting herself from a ten-billion-dollar empire.

Ken looked at her. There was no romantic delusion left. He saw only the frantic, desperate social anxiety of a woman anchoring herself to a hollow facade.

He reached out and took Rick’s gold-plated Montblanc Meisterstück pen from the counter. Without a tremor, without a change in his steady breathing, Ken signed all six duplicate pages.

He clicked the pen shut and set it down.

Selene snatched the folder triumphantly. “Leave the fobs. Get out.”

Ken walked calmly to the entryway console bowl. He ignored the building fobs. He reached in and extracted only two items. The first was his aged, calfskin-bound blueprint journal—the ledger holding the original engineering schematics and cryptographic keys for the city’s largest infrastructure trust. The second was a matte-gray milled titanium key fob, laser-etched with a Fibonacci spiral. The Founder’s Master Pass.

“Taking your useless scrap metal?” Selene mocked. “Rick is getting me a platinum biometric pass for the Aether Spire next week.”

“Good luck,” Ken said softly.

He zipped his damp Carhartt jacket, turned his back on them, and walked out. He passed the trash bags in the hallway without a second glance. The elevator ride down was silent. At street level, he walked past the valet into the dark alley, rain slicing sideways through the wind.

He entered his unassuming dark sedan and pulled the heavy reinforced door shut. Acoustic silence consumed the cabin.

As he turned the ignition, his encrypted satellite phone flared to life on the dash HUD, cutting through the darkness with sharp green text.

`[AETHER SOVEREIGN TRUST // PRIORITY ALPHA]` `PHASE II ACQUISITION WINDOW ACTIVATED. LIQUIDITY POOL: $1.2B UNLOCKED. PROCEED TO COMMAND.`

Ken stared at the pouring rain on the windshield. He reached out, pressing his thumb against the biometric scanner.

“Execute,” he whispered.

The sedan’s engine purred to life, and Ken accelerated into the rain-swept MoPac corridor, leaving the thirty-fourth floor far behind.
