Volume 1, Chapter 2 — The MoPac Ambush & The Vanguard Rescue

The Hidden Founder of Aether Heights 2 of 6

The MoPac Expressway bridge over Lady Bird Lake was a blinding expanse of concrete and water spray. Flash flooding hammered the slick asphalt. In the rear passenger cabin of her armored obsidian Mercedes-Maybach S680, Scarlett Vance, CEO of the fifty-billion-dollar Vance Capital, ignored the tempest. She tapped her iPad, dissecting portfolio risk sheets with a cultured, razor-sharp focus.

Her driver, Marcus, maintained a steady sixty-five miles per hour. Then the rearview mirror flared.

Two heavy, unplated black Cadillac Escalades materialized out of the deluge, boxing the Maybach against the retaining wall.

“Hold on!” Marcus shouted, gripping the wheel.

The lead Escalade surged, executing a brutal PIT maneuver. Six thousand pounds of steel slammed into the Maybach’s rear quarter. The kinetic jolt was violent, snapping the heavy sedan sideways across three flooded lanes. Tires broke traction. Metal shrieked against the concrete barrier. The front axle shattered, concussing Marcus against the steering column. The acrid chemical sting of deployable seatbelt pre-tensioners filled the cabin.

Scarlett braced herself, her iPad cracking against the leather partition. Through the rain-streaked windows, she watched four men in tactical gear and balaclavas dismount into the downpour. They carried steel pry bars and tactical strobes. The leader swung his bar. The double-pane ballistic glass fractured into a blinding spiderweb.

A hundred yards back, in the shadow of the overpass, Ken Harris watched the tactical cordon from his unmarked dark sedan. His hands rested lightly on the wheel. He dropped two gears, the engine surging, and accelerated down the flooded shoulder.

He flicked a switch. Roof-integrated ten-thousand-lumen auxiliary LED beams erupted, slicing through the cascading rain sheets in a blinding white glare. The attackers staggered, throwing their hands up against the light.

Ken did not brake. He used his sedan’s reinforced push-bar to clip the trailing Escalade, spinning its heavy chassis into the concrete barrier and pinning the attackers’ escape route. He halted alongside the Maybach and stepped out into the icy Texas rain.

His breathing was slow, absolute.

The lead enforcer lunged at him with the pry bar. Ken stepped inside the arc. A swift joint lock snapped the man’s wrist; a leg sweep dropped him face-first into the flooded road. Ken moved to the Maybach’s jammed passenger door, ripping it open. He drew an emergency rescue blade, slicing through Scarlett’s locked seatbelt in a single fluid motion.

He extracted her in eight seconds, pulling her into the passenger seat of his sedan. He locked the doors, executed a rapid reverse J-turn through the debris, and accelerated up the Enfield Road access ramp into the downtown grid.

Inside the cabin, acoustic insulation killed the storm. The air smelled of cedarwood and clean leather. The climate control purred, warming Scarlett’s damp ivory blazer.

Ken handed her a dry micro-fleece towel without taking his eyes off the road. “Are you injured, Ms. Vance?”

Scarlett caught her breath. She wiped her face, her analytical brain processing the absolute lack of post-incident tremors in the man beside her. His steering corrections were effortless. On his windshield, a glowing green HUD recorded encrypted 4K sixty-frames-per-second telemetry, capturing the vehicle VINs and facial scans of the attackers.

She pulled out her personalized Vance Capital executive checkbook. She signed an open blank check and slid it onto the leather armrest. “Name your figure. You saved my life.”

Ken used two fingers to slide the check back to her lap. “I don’t need your charity, Ms. Vance.”

Scarlett’s sharp hazel eyes narrowed. She reached for the check, and as she did, her gaze locked onto the center console cup holder. Resting inside was a matte-gray milled titanium key fob with a micro-inlaid biometric sensor. The Fibonacci spiral etched into its surface caught the ambient light.

Her breath hitched. She recognized it instantly. It was the singular Founder’s Pass to the eighty-fifth-floor Penthouse, forged during the ten-billion-dollar Aether District syndication.

They pulled into the amber floodlights of Zenith Tower’s secured port-cochère. Vance Capital security rushed forward, radios blaring.

Ken handed Scarlett a matte-black encrypted business card with a twelve-digit frequency code. His voice was calm, low, and commanding.

“Tomorrow morning at eight, you’re going to need my balance sheet. Rick Sterling is coming for your balance sheet—and he’s using forged debt to do it.”

Before Scarlett could reply, Ken pulled away into the night, leaving her standing under the illuminated awning, clutching the card, her mind reeling with the realization that the phantom architect of Austin was finally stepping out of the shadows.
