Chapter 4: The Black-Tie Gala and the Public Proclamation

The Dying Billionaire’s Starving Daughter 4 of 6

The warm chandelier light of the Faulkner Manor Dressing Suite reflected across the full-length gilded mirrors. Mrs. Garrison adjusted the polished brass buttons on a custom-tailored emerald-green velvet coat, the rich fabric brushing softly against its silk lining. The scent of jasmine pomade, dry cedar, and pressed wool filled the room.

Hannah looked at her reflection in the mirror. She shifted uncomfortably in her patent leather shoes, her fingers tracing the cold brass of her mother’s locket resting against her collarbone.

“Father…” Hannah murmured, her voice laced with insecurity. “Will the people at the party know I was in the alley yesterday?”

Owen knelt before her, dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue wool tuxedo and crisp white French cuffs. He adjusted her velvet lapel and withdrew a fine gold chain bearing an antique gold Faulkner signet ring. He placed it carefully around her neck alongside the locket.

“They will see a Faulkner, Hannah,” Owen said, his steady voice anchoring her nerves. “You hold your head high, look them straight in the eye, and remember: you do not need their approval. You already have my heart and my name.”

Mrs. Garrison stepped back, beaming. “She looks like an angel, Mr. Faulkner. A true heiress.”

An hour later, the Plaza Imperial’s Grand Ballroom buzzed with the malicious whispers of five hundred elite guests. Soaring crystal chandeliers refracted thousands of dazzling white prisms over black-tie attendees sipping vintage champagne. Towering floral centerpieces and intricate ice sculptures glittered under the lights.

In the shadows of the velvet-draped balcony, Claire Holloway circulated among board members, whispering calculated rumors of Owen’s hypoxia-induced strokes and impending cognitive collapse. Vance stood nearby, sweating through his tuxedo collar, gripping his champagne flute until the crystal trembled against his white knuckles.

The heavy double doors of the grand ballroom opened. A hush fell over the room as Owen walked in, his hand holding Hannah’s. The sheer contrast between the artificial sparkle of diamond necklaces and the quiet, unpretentious dignity of the child in emerald velvet commanded the room’s attention. Flashbulbs exploded from the press corps.

Condescending socialite Victoria Sterling stepped forward from the crowd, her fake smile twitching at the corners. She looked down at Hannah with barely concealed disdain.

“Aren’t you a lucky little stray?” Victoria sneered, loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear. “Playing dress-up for one night must feel like a fairy tale.”

Hannah didn’t flinch. She squeezed Owen’s index finger, leveled her hazel eyes at the woman, and spoke with devastating calm. “My father gave me a home and taught me dignity. What did you give to anyone here tonight?”

Victoria’s smile shattered. Owen coldly turned his gaze to the socialite.

“Victoria, if you’ve finished insulting my daughter, you may return to your table,” Owen said. “Or security will remove your table from my foundation’s guest list permanently.”

Owen guided Hannah to the stage, stepping up to the keynote podium under the blinding white spotlights. Giant LED screens displayed the Faulkner crest alongside the finalized adoption decree. The sharp feedback chime of the microphone cut through the silence. Owen gripped the lectern with white knuckles, masking the aching cardiac strain in his chest, and projected immovable executive power.

“For thirty years, you celebrated my profits, my towers, and my balance sheets,” Owen began, his voice ringing with absolute moral authority. “But true legacy is not measured in steel or stock options. True legacy is measured in who you protect when the storm hits. This is Hannah Faulkner. She is my legally adopted daughter, my joy, and the sole heir to Faulkner Global Industries.”

A synchronized intake of breath rippled through the five hundred guests. A press reporter shouted from the front row. “Mr. Faulkner, what about your nephew Vance? What about board succession?”

Owen stared directly at Vance, whose face had drained of color. “Vance has received millions in unearned privilege and squandered it on vanity. The future of this company belongs to integrity, not blood parasites. Good evening.”

As the ballroom erupted in thunderous applause, Dr. Arthur Harris quickly pulled Owen aside into the shadowy VIP balcony alcove. A cold midnight draft blew through the French doors.

“Owen…” Dr. Harris leaned close, his voice trembling with urgency over the roaring applause. “Claire Holloway approached me in the lobby twenty minutes ago. She deposited two million dollars into my offshore cardiology research foundation and slipped an incompetency affidavit into my clinic inbox. She told me if I sign it, another three million clears upon your death.”

Owen’s eyes narrowed. “Did you record her exact words, Arthur?”

“Every syllable,” Harris confirmed, pulling out a secure digital micro-recorder. “St. Jude’s legal compliance and the State Bar Ethics Committee already have encrypted copies. But Owen… she’s serving an ex-parte injunction at your manor at six o’clock tomorrow morning.”

Owen pocketed the recorder, his jaw setting into stone. “Let them come. They think they are hunting a dying invalid. They are about to discover what happens when you corner a tiger in his own den.”

Dr. Harris leaned close to Owen’s ear, his voice trembling with urgency over the roaring applause: “Owen… Claire Holloway just deposited two million dollars into my offshore cardiology research foundation and slipped an incompetency affidavit into my clinic inbox. She plans to serve an emergency ex-parte conservatorship raid on your manor at dawn.”
