Chapter 3: The Nephew’s Greed and the Disinheritance
Morning sunlight pierced the leaded glass windows of the breakfast parlor, illuminating silver platters stacked with buttermilk pancakes, maple syrup, and fresh berries. Hannah sat in an oversized cozy cardigan, her small fingers carefully buttering a pancake. For the first time in her life, the food wasn’t guarded by a looming threat.
The heavy double doors kicked open with a violent crash. Vance Faulkner stormed in, his disheveled Brioni suit smelling of stale scotch, expensive cologne, and nervous sweat. He slammed a fraudulent ten-million-dollar wire request onto the polished table, rattling the silver cutlery. Hannah dropped her fork, the sharp clatter echoing in the parlor as she shrank back, terrified by the sudden aggression.
“I need ten million cleared to my Cayman logistics subsidiary by noon, Uncle,” Vance demanded, his bloodshot eyes darting around the room. He stopped, his gaze locking onto the child sitting in the chair of honor. His upper lip curled in classist disgust. “And what in God’s name is this filthy little gutter rat doing eating off Faulkner silver?”
Hannah scrambled behind Mrs. Garrison, trembling, her hands gripping the housekeeper’s apron. “I… I washed my hands. I didn’t break the fork…”
Mrs. Garrison stepped forward, her posture rigid. “You will lower your voice in this house, Mr. Vance, or you will leave immediately.”
Owen Faulkner set his teacup down with glacial calm. He suppressed a tight chest spasm, masked through disciplined breathing, and leveled his steel-gray eyes at his nephew.
“You have thirty seconds to step back from that child, Vance,” Owen said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. “Choose your next breath carefully.”
Vance scoffed, desperation fueling his entitlement. He lunged forward to grab Hannah’s arm, intent on dragging her away from the table.
Owen rose with terrifying speed. He intercepted Vance’s wrist with an iron grip, the creak and pop of compressed tendons snapping through the room. Vance gasped in agony as Owen twisted the wrist downward, forcing the younger man to his knees on the Persian carpet. Cold sweat broke out on Vance’s forehead.
Four security officers, led by Chief Marcus, entered the parlor with synchronized footsteps.
“You’re crazy!” Vance yelled from his knees, clutching his throbbing wrist. “You’re losing your mind over some nameless street stray! I’m your nephew—your blood! You owe me this company!”
“You are a parasite who has never earned a single dollar in your pathetic life,” Owen said, confiscating Vance’s estate keycard from his pocket. “You laid a hand toward my daughter in my home. If you ever step across this property line again, Marcus will not use words. Get him out of my sight.”
Security dragged Vance out, hauling him through the iron gates. Hannah peeked out from behind Mrs. Garrison, stepped forward, and clutched Owen’s coat pocket.
“Father… don’t be angry,” she whispered softly. “I’m okay.”
The word “Father” anchored Owen’s resolve. He nodded, placing a protective hand on her shoulder.
An hour later, the scent of cedar smoke and old parchment filled the Master Library. Owen sat at his desk, a gold Montblanc pen in hand, signing his name across heavy blue-ribboned parchment. His elite estate counsel, Robert Vance, and forensic auditor, David Chen, stood by as secure laptops hummed in the background. Owen let a sublingual nitroglycerin pill melt under his tongue, steadying his heart rate.
“Owen,” Robert warned, adjusting his glasses. “This trust structure completely bypasses probate court. Even if the entire extended family contests your will, they cannot touch an irrevocable Delaware dynasty trust. But if you sign this, you give up the power to ever revoke it.”
“Good,” Owen replied, signing the final page of the Sovereign Living Dynasty Trust. He transferred sixty-two percent controlling voting shares of Faulkner Global Industries to a Delaware-Zurich fiduciary trust, naming Hannah as the sole lifetime beneficiary. “Because I will never want it revoked. Everything I built exists for Hannah now.”
Owen looked up at the auditor. “And Chen… pull every invoice Vance approved in the logistics wing over the last twenty-four months. Trace Vanguard Crest Ltd. I want the noose ready when he tries to jump.”
Meanwhile, in a sterile glass-and-chrome 45th-floor penthouse suite overlooking the rain-swept financial district, Vance paced frantically. He nursed his swollen wrist with an ice pack, the scent of Tom Ford Black Orchid perfume mingling with his stale sweat.
Senior Managing Partner Claire Holloway sat behind her desk, dressed in a sharp crimson power suit, her designer rectangular frames reflecting the city skyline.
“He’s adopting her, Claire!” Vance shouted, his encrypted phone buzzing relentlessly with threats from Macau loan sharks. “A five-year-old beggar he found in a dumpster twelve hours ago! If that paperwork goes through, I get zero. The loan sharks in Macau will skin me alive!”
Claire smiled coldly, tapping her gold pen against a fresh court brief. “Relax, Vance. A dying man with end-stage heart failure adopting a street child on a whim? Any probate judge will see that as textbook cognitive impairment and lack of testamentary capacity. We don’t wait for him to die. We strike while he’s alive.”
She outlined her predatory strategy: filing an emergency ex-parte Adult Conservatorship petition alleging cardiac hypoxia dementia, bribing Dr. Arthur Harris with two million dollars to sign an incompetency affidavit, and seizing Hannah through corrupt Child Welfare agents.
Claire Holloway adjusted her designer glasses, tapped a fresh court brief with her gold pen, and smiled with razor-sharp malice: “If Owen Faulkner is declared mentally incompetent before the adoption decree clears the probate judge, the girl goes directly into state protective custody… and you become the court-appointed conservator of six billion dollars.”
