Chapter 2: The Golden Mansion and the Secret Crusts

The Dying Billionaire’s Starving Daughter 2 of 6

The heavy bronze double doors of Faulkner Manor opened to reveal a cavernous expanse of Italian checkered marble and vaulted ceilings. Crystal chandeliers cast prismatic light across the entrance hall, pushing back the cold mausoleum silence that had defined the estate for decades. Thomas stepped back as Owen carried the small bundle of cashmere across the limestone threshold.

Hannah stared down at the pristine marble, her muddy boots dangling over the edge of Owen’s arms. She whimpered, terrified to soil the floor. Mrs. Garrison, the head housekeeper of twenty years, approached with swift, maternal dignity. Without a word of reproach, she knelt and gently unlaced the dirty boots, slipping them away before Hannah’s bare, bruised toes could touch the cold stone.

“Mr. Faulkner called ahead, sweetheart,” Mrs. Garrison said, her voice rich with quiet comfort. “The hearth is hot, the broth has been simmering for four hours, and there are rolls straight from the oven. Come sit by the fire.”

Owen carried her into the East Dining Salon, where a roaring cedar fire crackled in the massive hearth. He seated her in a carved mahogany dining chair. Mrs. Garrison set down a steaming porcelain bowl of rich beef broth and a basket of warm, fresh yeast rolls accompanied by churned butter.

Hannah stared at the feast. She tracked the movements of the adults’ hands, her hazel eyes scanning the room’s exits. She leaned closer to Owen, whispering cautiously. “Is this whole bowl for me? Do I have to leave any for tomorrow?”

“Every drop is yours, Hannah,” Owen said, fighting a sharp twinge of sorrow in his chest. “And if you finish it, Mrs. Garrison will bring another.”

She attacked the food with ravenous caution, tearing the roll into small pieces and chewing with calculated precision, constantly checking to see if the bowl would be snatched away.

An hour later, steam swirled through the Master Guest Suite en-suite bath. The scent of lavender, eucalyptus, and almond soap filled the air. Hannah sat in the warm water, letting the suds soak away weeks of alley soot and the lingering chill of frostbite. Yet, her small fist remained tightly clenched around the tarnished brass locket on her neck.

Owen knelt beside the tub, examining the locket. The intricate engraving caught his eye—an inscription linking her late mother, Eleanor, to the Faulkner Scholarship Fund. The revelation struck him with the quiet force of destiny.

“Mama gave me this before the white room,” Hannah said, her voice echoing off the tile. “She said if I held it tight, I wouldn’t be lost.”

“Your mother had good taste, Hannah,” Owen murmured, brushing a wet curl from her forehead. “It stays right on your nightstand where you can see it.”

Mrs. Garrison wrapped Hannah in a warm ivory towel, dressed her in a soft flannel nightgown, and handed her a plush satin bear. Hannah immediately clutched the bear, naming him Barnaby.

Out in the hallway, Dr. Arthur Harris packed his stethoscope. “Malnourished and mild frostbite on her toes, but no chronic organ damage. With proper nutrition, she’ll recover. And you, Owen… your resting pulse is forty beats steadier than it was this afternoon.”

Dr. Harris noted the metrics in the St. Jude’s cognitive assessment binder. Owen nodded, his focus entirely on the closed bedroom door.

At 2:00 AM, a cardiac flutter woke Owen. He sat up in his silk pajamas and dark navy wool dressing robe, waiting for his measured breathing to calm the dull tightness in his chest. He rose and walked the silent second-floor corridor, the pale blue moonlight cutting across the dark hardwood floors, accompanied only by the heavy, deliberate ticking of the grandfather clock.

As he approached the guest suite, he heard a faint, frantic rustling. He pushed the door open silently.

In the moonlight, Hannah knelt on the Persian rug. She was frantically stuffing dry dinner rolls, dried apple slices, and crackers beneath her silk mattress and into the hollow seam of Barnaby the bear.

She spotted Owen’s silhouette in the doorway and froze in terror. Dropping her head, she curled her arms over her chest, trembling violently.

“I didn’t steal them from the stove…” her voice broke, clutching Barnaby to her ribs. “I just took what was left on the tray. Please don’t lock the door. Please don’t put me outside.”

Owen stood motionless, the physical reality of his failing heart eclipsed by an uncontainable sorrow. He lowered himself to the cold hardwood floor, crossing his legs in his pajamas.

“Hannah… look at me,” he said softly.

He reached out, took a dry crust from her hidden stash, and snapped it in half. He put a piece in his mouth and chewed the stale bread. He met her wide, fearful eyes, demonstrating that her trauma carried no shame.

He lifted her gently and carried her downstairs to the master kitchen. The warm amber light clicked on, illuminating the massive oak cabinets. Owen set her down in front of a low, accessible pantry shelf stocked with biscuits, dried fruit, and warm baked bread.

“Not bad. A little dry, but good bread,” Owen said, pointing to the shelf. “You don’t have to hide it under the bed, Hannah. Look down at this low shelf. From tonight on, this cupboard will never have a lock. Day or night, rain or snow, everything on this shelf belongs to you.”

Hannah stared at the bounty. “Even if I wake up at midnight? Nobody will lock it?”

“Never again,” Owen vowed, kissing the top of her head. “As long as I draw breath, you are safe.”

She finally let out a long breath, resting her cheek against his woolen robe, and drifted into a peaceful sleep in his arms.

Hannah had barely drifted into peaceful sleep with her cheek pressed against Owen’s woolen robe when the violent roar of a high-performance sports car tore through the morning silence, followed by the vicious crunch of tires locking up on the gravel driveway and the front doorbell ringing in frantic, furious demand.
