Chapter 6: The Queen Reclaims Her Throne
Ryan Caldwell knelt on the hardwood stage floor, clutching desperately at the heavy fabric of Isabella’s poured-platinum silk gown. His face, wet with tears and mucus, buried itself against the fabric.
Isabella took a smooth, deliberate step backward. The crisp slide of liquid silver silk pulled effortlessly from his sweating fingernails. She refused to let him soil her hem.
She looked down at the shivering, bankrupt ex-billionaire with an expression of pure, Arctic detachment.
“You wanted a queen, Ryan,” Isabella’s velvet-smooth voice commanded the absolute silence of the room. “You stood on this stage and told Manhattan that a man of your stature needed a queen.”
She paused, letting the words settle like heavy frost over the paralyzed tycoons and flashing cameras.
“But you forgot the most important rule,” she delivered the final, iconic verdict. “A queen rules. Beggars plead. And traitors starve.”
Ryan let out an agonized, broken sob, collapsing forward until his forehead rested against the stage floor.
Luca DeSantis stepped forward. His towering frame cast a dark, impenetrable shadow over Ryan’s trembling body. Luca looked down with pure menace. “Touch her again, Caldwell, and you won’t live to see your trial.”
Two Federal Marshals stepped onto the stage, holding signed federal arrest warrants for securities fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion. They reached down, wrenching Ryan to his feet. They pulled his arms behind his back, locking the steel handcuffs over his wrists with a metallic double-click.
“Isabella… please… no!” Ryan sobbed in despair as they dragged him across the stage. “Don’t let them take me! ISABELLA!”
Fifty relentless xenon camera strobes illuminated his tear-stained face and disheveled tuxedo as the marshals hauled him out of the ballroom.
Isabella turned her back on the empty stage and began her descent down the grand twin marble staircase.
Luca walked half a step behind her right shoulder, matching her pace flawlessly, followed by the four broad-shouldered Sicilian enforcers.
As Isabella’s Louboutins touched the ballroom floor, the assembly of Fortune 500 CEOs, Wall Street titans, senators, and European aristocrats immediately parted down the central aisle like the Red Sea. No one spoke. No one dared look directly into her glacial storm-gray eyes. Older tycoons and board members bowed their heads in fearful reverence, averting their gaze as she passed.
The whispering rustle of heavy silk brushing across polished Italian marble echoed through the silent hall, blending with the synchronized, heavy footsteps of her security detail.
The Gala Host stepped forward at the aisle’s end, bowing low with trembling hands. “A magnificent evening, Donna Isabella. The Hartwell Foundation is forever in your debt. Safe journey, Donna Isabella.”
Isabella gave a subtle, regal nod of acknowledgment, walking through the parted sea of elites with hypnotic, unhurried grace.
She emerged through the grand revolving doors onto the covered portico of the Monte Verde Hotel. The midnight air over Central Park was crisp and clean, washing away the scent of Casablanca lilies and chilled Dom Pérignon. A light autumn rain glistened on the black asphalt, the refreshing cold droplets reflecting the warm portico lights.
A cool breeze swept across Isabella’s bare shoulders.
Luca immediately slipped off his heavy, bespoke Loro Piana charcoal cashmere overcoat. He stepped close, gently draping the warm material around her shoulders.
Isabella felt the heavy, reassuring warmth of the cashmere settle against her skin. The coat was steeped in Luca’s signature scent of cedarwood, clean wool, and Cuban tobacco. It felt like a fortress.
She turned her head, looking up into Luca’s intense obsidian eyes. They were filled with fierce loyalty, protective devotion, and smoldering dark romance.
For the first time all evening, the ice in Isabella’s expression melted into a genuine, subtle, sovereign smile. “It’s time to go home, Luca.”
Luca bowed his head slightly, his gravelly baritone rich with reverent, husky warmth. “As you command, Principessa.”
He opened the heavy, armored rear door of the lead midnight-black Mercedes-Maybach S680.
Isabella glides into the plush leather interior. Luca slid in beside her, closing the door with a deep, vault-like thud that sealed out the noise of the city.
The six-vehicle armored Maybach convoy pulled away from the curb, yellow taxi lights and skyscrapers blurring against rain-slicked tinted windows as they glided through the Manhattan night toward the Varelli chateau on Long Island.
