Chapter 4: The Don’s Decree

Kissed His Mistress at the Gala 4 of 6

Kovacs drove his heavy boots up the marble stairs, his fists raised to bulldoze through the defense.

Isabella did not flinch. She stood under the pulsing crimson light of the locked 8K display, calmly lifting a champagne flute from the podium tray.

Luca DeSantis moved into the center of the stairs. He did not brace for impact; he flowed into it.

Second one. Luca caught Kovacs’s driving right wrist, pivoting his weight backward. He wrenched the arm downward, snapping the radius bone with a sickening, gunshot-like CRACK that echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

Second two. As Kovacs screamed, Luca drove a steel-plated elbow squarely into the mercenary’s temple. Kovacs collapsed instantly, a heavy dead weight tumbling down the marble steps.

Second three. Miller lunged forward, his hand diving inside his tactical jacket for a weapon. Luca pivoted inside the reach, his left hand clamping around Miller’s throat like an industrial vise. Simultaneously, Luca drove a brutal knee upward into Miller’s solar plexus. The air exploded from Miller’s lungs in a ragged wheeze.

Second four. With a terrifying display of raw physical power, Luca lifted the two-hundred-and-forty-pound contractor completely off the floor by his lapels and throat.

Second five. Luca wheeled Miller around and hurled him over the marble balustrade. The bodyguard plummeted, crashing heavily onto the parquet ballroom floor below with a splintering thud.

Luca rolled his shoulders, casually smoothing the lapels of his Tom Ford jacket and resetting his silk cuffs. His breathing remained completely steady. The faint scent of gun oil and cedarwood drifted from his clothes.

Socialites shrieked, diving under the damask-draped tables in sheer panic.

Ryan stumbled backward, his spine slamming violently against the mahogany podium. He hyperventilated, his eyes locked on the broken bodies of his elite security team. “You… you’re an animal! You’re a savage!”

Luca scanned the frozen venue guards along the perimeter, his obsidian eyes daring anyone to move. “Anyone else wish to approach the Principessa?”

Before Ryan could scream another order, the ballroom’s six Austrian chandeliers suddenly dimmed to a deep amber glow. The stage spotlights extinguished.

The massive 8K presentation screen behind them flickered violently, overriding the red lockout screen. Scanlines washed across the display until an encrypted satellite feed initialized in flawless high-resolution.

On the screen sat Don Salvatore Varelli.

The fifty-eight-year-old sovereign patriarch of New York’s underworld reclined in a high-backed leather wing chair inside his Gold Coast chateau study. He wore a bespoke double-breasted charcoal Savile Row wool suit. An antique gold-and-platinum sovereign signet ring gleamed on his hand as he held a tumbler of vintage Macallan.

The deep bass vibrations of his voice reverberated through the high-fidelity sound system, settling into the chests of all three hundred guests. The ballroom plunged into a tomb-like, paralyzed silence.

“The Monte Verde Hotel, and the sixty-five-story Caldwell Tech tower you claim as your kingdom,” Don Salvatore spoke with unhurried, ancient aristocratic weight, “are owned by Trinacria Real Estate Group. A holding entity of my family.”

Ryan’s mouth fell open, his eyes widening in mounting horror.

“For three years, Ryan Caldwell,” the Don continued, his piercing steel-gray eyes boring into the camera lens, “my daughter graced your home with peace. You mistook her silence for weakness. You took her mind, stole her jewelry, and brought a whore to our table.” Don Salvatore took a slow sip of the Macallan. “A man who does not know how to treasure a queen deserves only the gutter, Ryan. Consider your existence in this city finished.”

Isabella stood before the screen and bowed her head slightly in quiet filial respect.

The video feed faded out, replaced by the matte black coiled-serpent crest of the Varelli family.

The Gala Host stepped up to the side microphone, his hands trembling violently. “Ladies and gentlemen… the evening’s primary ten-million-dollar platinum patron, code ‘I.V.’, is officially recognized as Donna Isabella Varelli.”

Pandemonium shattered the silence. Wall Street financiers scrambled out of their chairs.

Julian Vance, the lead underwriter, grabbed his phone and jammed the speaker button. “Cancel the Caldwell Tech IPO underwriting right now! Freeze the two-billion-dollar credit facility! Pull our name off every SEC filing before the market opens!”

Multiple smartphone ringtones blared across the room as venture capitalists frantically pulled bridge loans and revoked guarantees.

Ryan stumbles down the stage stairs, his legs shaking. He lunged toward Julian Vance, grabbing the banker by his lapels. “Julian, please! We have a contract! We’re talking ten billion dollars!”

Julian Vance violently ripped his lapels out of Ryan’s grasp and shoved him backward. Ryan crashed into a VIP table, overturning a silver ice bucket. Freezing water and melting cubes scattered across his trousers and the marble floor.

“Get your hands off me, Caldwell!” Vance roared, retreating toward the exit. “Are you insane? You picked a fight with Salvatore Varelli! You’re toxic waste, Caldwell. You’re dead in this town.”

Vanessa rushed down the stairs, her high heels slipping on the wet marble. She clutched Ryan’s arm, her voice a terrified screech. “Ryan! Do something! What is happening?!”

Ryan’s luxury smartphone buzzed in his hand, then slipped through his numb, wet fingers, shattering on the stone floor. He ignored Vanessa, slowly turning his horrified, bloodshot eyes back toward the stage.

“Varelli…?” Ryan whispered in strangled disbelief, the word tearing at his throat. “You’re… Salvatore Varelli’s daughter?!”
