Chapter 3: The Code Beneath the Crown

Kissed His Mistress at the Gala 3 of 6

Isabella ascended the white marble stairs of the stage. Her backless poured-platinum gown swept the steps with liquid grace, the fabric catching the glare of the spotlights.

Vanessa stepped forward to the top of the stairs, physically blocking the path. She extended a trembling hand, her scarlet nails digging toward empty air. “You are trespassing on private corporate property! Step down or—”

Luca DeSantis glided forward, moving with the terrifying, silent speed of a predator. He placed his towering six-foot-three frame directly between Vanessa and Isabella. His obsidian eyes bored into Vanessa’s face with lethal stillness. He did not raise a hand; he did not need to.

Luca leaned down, his gravelly whisper slicing through the heavy air. “Take one more step toward her, and you leave this ballroom in a body bag.”

The breath rushed out of Vanessa’s lungs. Her knees gave way, and she stumbled backward, crashing against the casing of the massive 8K display screen. The ominous hum of the machinery vibrated through her spine as she stared up at the syndicate underboss in raw animal terror.

Isabella stepped smoothly past the cowering woman and walked to the mahogany podium.

Ryan gripped the edges of the wood, his palms leaving greasy, sweat-streaked smudges across the polish. His hot breath smelled of expensive scotch and rising panic. He leaned into Isabella’s ear, his voice a furious, hurried whisper. “Isabella, stop this circus right now! I’ll wire five million dollars to your private account tonight. Ten million! Just take the car and leave before you destroy everything!”

Isabella turned her head, fixing him with the icy, unblinking focus of her storm-gray eyes. “My dear Ryan…” Her voice carried the cold weight of a judge passing a final sentence. “You don’t even have ten dollars in your name.”

Luca stepped forward, opening the crimson Smythson portfolio. He withdrew a thick parchment legal dossier bound with heavy red wax seals and handed it to Isabella.

She raised the dossier and slammed it down onto the mahogany podium directly across Ryan’s platinum Patek Philippe watch. The sharp, resounding CLACK echoed off the walls.

Isabella took the stage microphone. “You are served, Ryan Caldwell. Certified summons for immediate dissolution of marriage on grounds of public moral turpitude and flagrant infidelity under Article 14 of our prenuptial covenant.”

Ryan frantically pawed through the heavy parchment, his thumbs smearing the ink. Sweat ran down his temple, soaking into his fifteen-thousand-dollar Brioni collar. “Article 14…? This… this was just boilerplate corporate indemnity!”

Isabella turned her gaze to the media pit and the front-row VIP tables. “Three years ago, Ryan Caldwell founded Caldwell Tech with an anonymous fifty-million-dollar seed investment from Ares Trust. Ryan told Forbes that an anonymous European visionary believed in his genius.”

The machine-gun clicking of telephoto camera shutters erupted in the press pit.

“Ares Trust is a blind holding vehicle registered in Zurich, funded entirely by my personal capital,” Isabella continued, her voice slicing through the rising murmurs of the crowd. “Under the covenants of Ares Trust and Article 14, public infidelity triggers an immediate total clawback of all seed shares, voting rights, and real estate leases.”

“No!” Ryan shouted, his voice cracking into a ragged shriek. “That’s a lie! I built this company! I am Caldwell Tech!”

A reporter from the Bloomberg corporate desk leaped up from his chair. “Mr. Caldwell, does Ares Trust hold majority voting control?!”

Isabella looked at Ryan. “Under Article 14, your voting equity, executive severance, and stock options are formally null and void.”

Vanessa pushed herself away from the 8K screen, her jaw locking until the tendons in her neck strained against her skin. She lunged toward the secondary microphone. “The algorithms are ours! She’s lying! Ryan and I are filing the final neural patents with the USPTO tomorrow morning!”

Isabella looked at Vanessa with quiet pity. She reached into the Smythson portfolio and produced a set of certified deeds bearing embossed metallic seals. “The proprietary neural-mesh algorithm powering Project Aether was patented thirty-six months ago under patent deed CH-99420 with the Swiss Federal Institute and the USPTO. The sole author and copyright holder is Isabella Varelli.”

Isabella raised her left hand, revealing a small, encrypted titanium syndicate key. She inserted it into the podium’s master control terminal and typed a rapid four-digit bypass sequence with calm, measured keystrokes.

Instantly, the massive 8K screen behind them flashed a blinding, pulsing crimson.

`[CALDWELL TECH GLOBAL — ENTERPRISE ROOT ACCESS: REVOKED]` `[NEURAL-MESH LICENSE: TERMINATED BY PATENT HOLDER]` `[ALL HOSTED REPOSITORIES LOCKED]`

The red strobe washed the entire stage in blood-colored light. Across the ballroom, the live application demos and investor dashboard terminals crashed simultaneously to black screens.

Ryan’s face contorts into raw, unhinged fury. The last fragments of his corporate mask disintegrated. He screamed toward the stage wings, spit flying from his lips. “Kill the feed! Security, break her neck if you have to! Kovacs! Miller! Get up here right now! Drag this lunatic off my stage and throw her in the street, or you’ll never work in this city again!”

Isabella looked at him. “You were only ever a tenant in my house, Ryan. And your lease has expired.”

The heavy, thudding impacts of combat boots pounded against the marble. Two massive, two-hundred-and-forty-pound private executive bodyguards in black tactical suits sprinted out from the wings, charging straight up the stairs toward Isabella.

Luca DeSantis stepped smoothly into their path, a cold, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth.
