Chapter 6: The King’s Claim

Forbidden Vows: The Mafia King’s True Bride 6 of 6

The silence inside St. Jude’s Royal Cathedral lasted less than a fraction of a second before the sanctuary erupted into violent, definitive action.

Vivian Vance’s gray eyes widened in sheer, suffocating terror as the meaning of Dominic’s words crashed through her hysterical mind. She realized, with sickening clarity, the catastrophic magnitude of her mistake: in her desperate quest to humiliate Dominic Rossi before the High Table, she had not destroyed him. She had dismantled the single, fragile moral chain that had held back the most dangerous predator on the eastern seaboard.

“Kill him!” Vivian shrieked in absolute panic, tightening her finger on the trigger against Sofia’s temple. “Kill him right now!”

Before the Vance mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, three sharp, muffled cracks echoed from the vaulted stone clerestory eighty feet above.

Three high-velocity rounds from silenced sniper rifles, manned by Rossi marksmen concealed in the stone organ loft, pierced the ballistic helmets of the three mercenary riflemen with pinpoint mathematical perfection. The men collapsed like felled stone pillars onto the marble altar steps, their heavy automatic weapons clattering harmlessly against the stone.

Victor Vance instinctively raised his assault carbine to open fire, but Dominic moved with the blinding speed of a striking shadow.

Dominic closed the fifteen-foot gap in two thunderous strides. His bare right hand shot out like an iron vice, catching Vivian’s wrist and twisting it upward with brutal, bone-cracking torque. Vivian let out a piercing scream of agony as the Glock 19 fired a stray round into the high stone archway before her fractured grip gave way entirely, the pistol tumbling cleanly into Dominic’s open palm.

In the same fluid, unbroken motion, Dominic drove a devastating elbow into Victor Vance’s sternum. The impact sounded like a sledgehammer hitting concrete, sending the Vance military commander flying backward through the air until he crashed into the carved mahogany choir stalls with a sickening splinter of wood.

Marco Moretti and eight armed Rossi captains surged up the altar steps in a coordinated tactical sweep, disarming the remaining stunned mercenaries in less than five seconds flat.

Dominic didn’t spare a single glance for Vivian, who had collapsed onto the crimson carpet, clutching her broken wrist and weeping in hysterical, pathetic ruin. He didn’t look at Victor, who lay gasping for breath amidst the shattered wood.

Dominic ejected the magazine from the captured Glock, racked the slide to clear the chambered round, and tossed the empty weapon to Marco.

His midnight-blue eyes turned, locking completely and exclusively onto Sofia.

Sofia stood beneath the colossal golden crucifix, her veil slightly torn, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths as she stared at the man who had just dismantled an armed strike team with his bare hands. The air smelled of sulfur, ozone, and roses. The four hundred watching elites in the pews were frozen in awe, completely paralyzed by the sheer dominance of the display.

From behind the solid marble pulpit, Julian Bennett cautiously scrambled to his feet. He frantically dusted off his bespoke morning suit, adjusted his gold wristwatch, and attempted to summon the shattered remnants of his aristocratic authority.

“Sofia!” Julian called out, rushing forward with an indignant scowl, pointing a trembling, self-righteous finger at the sobbing Vivian. “This… this is an unspeakable barbarism! Don Rossi, thank God your security forces neutralized these terrorists! Sofia, take my hand. The Archbishop is still here! We must sign the official marriage registry immediately and get you to safety!”

Dominic turned slowly on his heel, his midnight-blue gaze narrowing as he looked at the banker.

“Julian,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, velvety rumble that made the hairs on the back of Julian’s neck stand on end. “You seem remarkably eager to sign that document.”

“Of course I am!” Julian stammered, sweat pouring down his pale forehead and soaking his stiff white collar. “She is my betrothed! We have a signed agreement before the church and the municipal court!”

Marco stepped forward, holding up a sleek black tactical tablet displaying an active decryption log.

“Don Rossi,” Marco announced in a clear, resonant voice that carried across the entire cathedral. “Six minutes ago, our financial intelligence unit intercepted an automated wire transfer protocol originating from Julian Bennett’s private offshore account. The moment Sofia’s signature and the marriage certificate were registered on the municipal database, fifty million dollars from Sofia’s bridal trust was scheduled to be automatically routed to Swiss accounts controlled by the Vance Cartel—to settle Julian’s sixteen-million-dollar gambling debt with the Vance bookmakers.”

A collective, thunderous gasp of disgust and outrage rippled through the assembled high-society guests and syndicate lords.

Julian’s face went entirely, utterly bloodless. “No… that’s a lie! That’s an error! Sofia, don’t listen to them! Dominic, I swear to God, I was framed!”

Dominic did not utter a single word of argument.

He crossed the distance between them in a single stride, his large hand reaching out and seizing Julian by the lapels of his expensive morning suit. With terrifying, effortless strength, Dominic lifted the six-foot banker completely off the marble floor with one arm, pulling Julian’s sweating face inches from his own.

“You entered my house,” Dominic whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, quiet fury that chilled the room to sub-zero. “You looked at the woman I would have torn the world apart for, and you saw a balance sheet to settle your gambling debts with my enemies.”

Dominic hurled Julian down the altar stairs with contemptuous force.

Julian tumbled down the crimson carpet, crying out in pain as he collided with the bottom step. Four Rossi enforcers immediately descended upon him, pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties and hauling him to his feet.

“Take them both to the southern holding cells at the docks,” Dominic commanded coldly, gesturing dismissively toward Julian and Vivian. “The High Table will convene at midnight to oversee the total liquidation and seizure of all Bennett and Vance corporate assets across the eastern seaboard.”

“Yes, Don Rossi!” the enforcers barked, dragging the groaning Julian and the screaming, cursing Vivian away through the smoking side aisles.

The heavy oak doors closed behind them, and a profound, holy silence descended over the great cathedral once more.

Dominic turned back toward the altar, walking slowly and deliberately up the steps toward Sofia.

Sofia stood motionless, her white-gloved hands trembling against the silver-and-sapphire serpent pendant at her neck. Her thoughts were a whirlwind of dizzying emotion, her heart hammering against her ribs with a wild, untamed rhythm.

“You’re not my brother,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying across the altar, tears of overwhelming relief and shock glistening in her hazel eyes. “All this time… all the guilt, all the shame… we were never related.”

Dominic stopped directly before her.

With slow, reverent grace, he reached out with both hands and took hers, gently easing her trembling fingers away from the pendant. He lifted her hands to his lips, kissing the center of each white silk palm with a burning, unyielding devotion that sent waves of pure electricity crashing through her entire body.

“You were never my sister, Sofia,” Dominic murmured, his deep baritone thick with an emotion so raw, so powerful, it made the air tremble. “The moment I laid eyes on you in that orphanage two years ago, my soul recognized you before my mind ever could. I thought God had cursed me with an untouchable angel to punish me for my sins. But God was testing my patience… to see if I was strong enough to wait for the day I could claim you as my own.”

Dominic reached up, his thumb tenderly wiping away the tears that spilled over her eyelashes, his touch sending shivers of heat down her neck and spine.

“Two years of living in a self-inflicted hell, Sofia,” Dominic said, his blue eyes blazing with fierce, possessive, undeniable adoration. “Two years of fighting every instinct in my body. But now… the lie is dead. There is no blood between us. There is no law in heaven or on earth that will ever keep you from me again.”

Sofia looked up into his chiseled face—the face that had commanded her dreams, the face she had wept over through hundreds of sleepless nights. The suffocating weight that had crushed her chest for seven hundred days vanished into nothingness.

She was not a prisoner of a curse. She was free.

They were free.

A radiant, breathless smile broke across Sofia’s face through her tears. “Dominic…”

Without waiting for another second, Dominic slipped his powerful arm around her slender waist, lifting her off her feet and pulling her flush against the hard, muscular wall of his chest.

His mouth came down on hers in a deep, ferocious, intoxicating kiss that obliterated everything else in the universe.

It was a kiss forged in two years of suppressed hunger, of agony transformed into absolute triumph, of a king finally taking possession of his rightful queen.

Sofia wrapped her arms tightly around Dominic’s neck, her fingers tangling in his dark, wavy hair, kissing him back with all the wild, uninhibited passion that had burned in her soul for so long. Every barrier, every doubt, and every ounce of fear dissolved in the intoxicating heat of his embrace.

Below the altar, the four hundred guests rose to their feet in a deafening, standing ovation.

The Capos of the Seven Families cheered, slamming their fists against the wooden pews in thunderous approval. Applause and shouts of respect roared through the ancient gothic arches, echoing off the stained-glass windows like a triumphant fanfare.

Dominic broke the kiss slightly, resting his forehead against hers, their ragged breaths mingling as their eyes locked in pure, unfiltered joy.

Dominic turned toward the stunned Archbishop, who was clutching his gold crucifix with wide, trembling eyes.

“Archbishop,” Dominic commanded, his voice booming through the cathedral with sovereign, undisputed authority. “Turn the page in the holy registry.”

The Archbishop swallowed hard, hastily adjusting his spectacles with shaking hands. “Don Rossi… to whose name shall I register the vows?”

Dominic wrapped his arm securely around Sofia’s waist, pulling her possessively against his side, his smile fierce, triumphant, and invincible as he looked down into the eyes of the woman who held his heart.

“Cross out Julian Bennett,” Dominic declared, his voice echoing to the high rafters of the cathedral. “Write Dominic Rossi. Today, Sofia becomes the undisputed Queen of Port Sterling.”

The great pipe organ roared to life once more, filling the air with majestic, soaring chords of victory as Dominic swept Sofia into his arms, carrying his true bride down the crimson aisle into their new, unbroken empire.
