Chapter 5: The Hostage at the Altar & The Zero-Match Test

Forbidden Vows: The Mafia King’s True Bride 5 of 6

The blast did not come from the grand western entrance where the security cordons stood guard.

It detonated with cataclysmic violence from the ancient crypt entrance situated beneath the north transept of St. Jude’s Cathedral, blowing the heavy wrought-iron sanctuary grates into twisted scrap with an ear-splitting boom that shook the marble floor beneath four hundred screaming guests.

A shockwave of pulverized limestone dust and gray, sulfurous smoke billowed into the grand nave, instantly obscuring the golden glow of the three thousand altar candles.

Before the Rossi perimeter guards stationed along the side aisles could pivot their weapons, eight tactical operators dressed in urban camouflage, ballistic body armor, and midnight-black helmets stormed up the transept stairs. They fired three deafening, suppressed automatic bursts into the high plaster ceiling. Decorative cornices and gilded baroque plaster rained down like shrapnel across the first five rows of pews, shattering crystal vases of white lilies into thousands of fragments.

“Nobody move! Hands where we can see them! Anyone reaches for leather gets a hole in their chest!” a mercenary barked through a high-decibel tactical megaphone.

Panic erupted like an open contagion through the cathedral nave.

High-society women shrieked in terror, their couture dresses dragging through debris as they scrambled beneath the mahogany pews. Dignitaries and foreign consuls ducked for cover behind stone columns. The hardened Capos of the Seven Families reached instinctively for their concealed sidearms, but the mercenaries had already secured dominant firing angles along the high marble choir balconies, red laser dots dancing across the pews.

At the altar, Julian Bennett gasped, immediately ripping his hand away from Sofia’s. His face went bone-white, his cultivated aristocratic composure disintegrating into unadulterated cowardice.

“Julian!” Sofia called out in shock, stumbling on the hem of her train.

Julian didn’t even glance back at her. Without a single word of protection, he scrambled behind the solid marble pulpit, dropping to his knees and shielding his head with his trembling arms like a terrified child.

Before Sofia could turn to run, a pair of sharp, manicured hands seized her violently from behind.

A cold, heavy steel barrel was pressed hard against the soft skin of Sofia’s left temple, digging in with brutal force until her breath caught in a sharp gasp of pain.

“Stay right there, you pathetic little orphan,” a vicious, mocking voice purred directly into her ear.

Sofia turned her eyes slightly and froze. “Vivian!”

Vivian Vance stood at the top of the marble altar steps, dressed in an extravagant crimson silk trench coat that billowed like a pool of fresh blood against the white lace of Sofia’s gown. Her platinum blonde bob was styled to perfection, her lips painted a glistening arterial red, and her cold gray eyes burning with unhinged, sadistic malice.

Behind her stood Victor Vance, her older brother and the military commander of the Vance Cartel’s mercenary wings, his assault rifle leveled directly at the center aisle.

In the front row of the nave, Dominic Rossi did not duck. He did not flinch. He did not seek cover behind a single pillar.

He stepped out into the center crimson aisle with lethal, chilling calm.

His midnight-blue eyes zeroed in on Vivian’s hand holding the chrome Glock 19 to Sofia’s temple. Behind him, Marco Moretti and eight Rossi captains drew their suppressed sidearms, forming a seamless, impenetrable defensive perimeter. But Dominic raised his right hand in a subtle, absolute gesture: *Hold.*

The entire cathedral went deathly still. The only sound was the crackle of burning candle wax and the heavy, ragged breathing of four hundred terrified witnesses.

“Vivian,” Dominic said.

His voice was not raised, yet it cut through the smoke and the echoing silence with the terrifying, resonant finality of an executioner’s blade.

“You have five seconds to remove your fingers from her neck,” Dominic continued, his tone silky, low, and devoid of all mercy. “If you do not, I will personally skin every member of the Vance family alive in front of the municipal council before the sun sets today.”

Vivian threw her head back and let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that bounced off the vaulted limestone ceiling, echoing like a siren of madness.

“Always so protective, Dominic!” Vivian screamed, digging the muzzle of the gun deeper into Sofia’s flesh until a tiny bead of blood welled up beneath the skin. “Always treating this nameless street beggar like a sacred goddess! You humiliated me! You tore up our betrothal contract, you threw away our family alliance, and you disgraced the entire Vance Cartel in front of the High Table—all because of this little rat! All because you thought she was your sweet, precious, untouchable baby sister!”

Sofia clenched her teeth against the pain of the cold metal against her skull, her hazel eyes locking onto Dominic. Even in this moment of mortal danger, she felt no fear for herself—only a profound, agonizing ache as she saw the rigid fury radiating from Dominic’s frame.

“Let her go, Vivian,” Dominic said, taking a slow, unhurried step toward the altar stairs. “Your fight is with me. Sofia has done nothing to you.”

“Oh, but she has done everything to me, Dominic!” Vivian shrieked with dark, euphoric glee. She reached into the interior pocket of her crimson coat with her free left hand and pulled out a thick document folder stamped with the gold-embossed seal of the Geneva Institute of Forensic Genetics. “And today, in front of the entire High Table, in front of every judge, every cardinal, and every newspaper in this city, I am going to show the world what a blind, pathetic fool you truly are!”

Vivian snapped the folder open with a flourish, shaking the multi-page laboratory report in front of the altar cameras that were still live-streaming the ceremony to the city’s high-society press rooms.

“Do you know what this is, Dominic?” Vivian yelled, her voice dripping with venomous triumph. “Six months ago, I paid fifty thousand dollars to bribe your private physician. I took the preserved forensic DNA baseline from Donna Isabella Rossi’s estate records, and I matched it against the hair collected from Sofia’s vanity brushes!”

Sofia’s breath hitched in her throat. The entire world seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

Vivian turned toward the assembly of four hundred stunned elites, reading the bold, capitalized conclusions at the top of her lungs:

“Here are the certified findings from the Geneva Central Genetics Laboratory! Sample A—Rossi maternal lineage: homozygous European haplotype R1b! Sample B—Sofia: Zero shared chromosomal markers! Zero shared alleles! The biological probability of kinship between Sofia and the Rossi family is exactly **zero point zero percent**!”

The words detonated through the cathedral with more force than the bomb in the crypt.

A stunned, paralyzed silence descended over the great nave.

The Capos of the Seven Families leaned forward, their eyes wide with disbelief. The Archbishop crossed himself in shock. Julian Bennett poked his sweating forehead out from behind the marble pulpit, his jaw hanging open in sheer bewilderment.

“She is not your sister, Dominic!” Vivian screamed, waving the genetic report in the air like a bloody banner, laughing hysterically. “She is a fraud! A gutter orphan who found a matching silver pendant in an antique shop or a dumpster, and used it to trick you into feeding her caviar, buying her diamonds, and putting a fifty-million-dollar trust in her name! You’ve spent two whole years worshiping an imposter!”

Vivian looked down at Dominic, waiting to see his empire crumble in humiliation. She waited to see him rage, weep, or collapse in the disgrace of being publicly deceived before the entire criminal underworld.

Sofia stood frozen at the top of the altar steps, her mind reeling in absolute, shattering shock.

*Not his sister.*

*No shared blood.*

*Zero kinship.*

Every memory of the past two years rushed through Sofia’s mind in a blinding flash—the tears she had wept, the sleepless nights, the suffocating guilt that had made her agree to marry a coward like Julian Bennett just to escape the torment of a love she believed was cursed by God.

It was all a lie. There was no curse. There was no taboo.

Sofia turned her eyes down toward the foot of the altar, looking at Dominic.

And what she saw made her heart stop beating entirely.

Dominic did not look humiliated. He did not look angry. He did not look broken.

Instead, every trace of sorrow, every shadow of restraint, and every ounce of moral agony that had haunted Dominic Rossi’s chiseled face for two agonizing years evaporated in a single, terrifying heartbeat.

His midnight-blue eyes ignited with a feral, predatory brilliance that burned like a supernova.

A slow, dark, breathtakingly dangerous smile spread across Dominic’s lips.

It was the smile of a demon who had just been handed the keys to paradise. It was the smile of a king who had spent two years chained in the fires of purgatory, only to realize that the chains were made of dust and his enemy had just blown them away.

“Zero percent,” Dominic murmured, his voice velvety, smooth, and laced with intoxicating power.

Vivian blinked, her triumphant laughter choking in her throat as she saw his expression. “What? Are you deaf, Dominic? I just proved she’s an imposter who made a fool of you!”

“No, Vivian,” Dominic said, stepping up onto the first marble step of the altar, his posture relaxing into pure, unadulterated dominance.

His eyes locked onto Sofia with a burning, possessive adoration that made Sofia’s knees tremble beneath her silk gown.

“You didn’t prove she’s an imposter,” Dominic said, his deep baritone filling every corner of the silent, awe-struck cathedral.

“You just removed the only thing in this universe that was keeping me from making her my wife.”
