Chapter 3: Shadows Behind the Silk Veil

Forbidden Vows: The Mafia King’s True Bride 3 of 6

The Atelier d’Ivoire sat discreetly within Port Sterling’s elite diamond quarter, a private three-story sanctuary of mirrored walls, gilded molding, and whisper-soft velvet carpets where the city’s oldest dynasties ordered their bridal haute couture. Today, the entire establishment had been closed to the public by order of the Rossi Syndicate.

Sofia stood on the raised circular podium of the grand viewing salon.

Four seamstresses in pristine white gloves hovered around her, pinning layers of Chantilly lace, silk chiffon, and delicate seed pearls. The wedding gown was a masterpiece of European craftsmanship—an off-the-shoulder bodice of translucent floral embroidery with long, tapered sleeves and a sweeping, cathedral-length train that cascaded down the tiered steps like a frozen river of snow.

Yet, as Sofia stared at her reflection in the triple gilded mirrors, she saw a stranger.

Her skin was pale, her hazel eyes shadowed with an emptiness that no dusting of cosmetic powder could conceal. Around her neck, the silver-and-sapphire serpent pendant lay nestled against the ivory lace, glowing like a drop of cold oceanic flame. The head seamstress had gently suggested removing the heavy pendant to make way for a traditional diamond choker, but Sofia had refused with such fierce, immediate conviction that the woman had hastily backed away.

The velvet curtain of the private lounge parted, and Julian Bennett entered.

He wore a bespoke charcoal morning suit, his light brown hair parted with aristocratic precision. On his wrist flashed a platinum Patek Philippe. He was classically handsome in the way men who had never seen a battlefield were handsome—unblemished, soft-spoken, and carefully polished.

“Sofia,” Julian said, stepping onto the plush carpet and offering a cultivated, admiring smile. “You look breathtaking. Truly. The entire city council will be talking about this ceremony for the next decade.”

“Thank you, Julian,” Sofia replied softly, turning slightly as the seamstresses adjusted the lace hem.

Julian approached the edge of the podium, his eyes sweeping over the intricate gown. There was admiration in his gaze, certainly, but beneath it lay a restless, calculating gleam that made Sofia’s intuition prickle. His fingers tapped nervously against his silk trouser pocket, where his smartphone gave a continuous, muted vibration every few seconds.

“Has Dominic finalized the registry trusts with our legal counsel?” Julian asked casually, though his tone was just a fraction too eager. “My father’s bankers called this morning. They mentioned that the fifty-million-dollar maritime trust requires Dominic’s co-signature before the vows are officially registered in the municipal records.”

Sofia looked at him through the mirror. “Is that what concerns you today, Julian? The trust co-signatures?”

Julian’s smile tightened for a split second before smoothly returning. “Of course not, darling. I only ask because I want to ensure your security. You know the syndicate world is unpredictable. Having your personal estate legally shielded under the Bennett Private Trust ensures that no rival cartel can touch what belongs to you.”

Before Sofia could reply, the heavy glass entrance doors of the atelier downstairs chimed.

A sudden, sharp tension rippled through the room. The seamstresses froze, exchanging uneasy glances as heavy, confident footsteps echoed up the marble staircase.

Dominic walked into the private viewing salon.

He had not bothered to change out of his dark bespoke three-piece suit, and his tailored coat billowed slightly as he moved. Two armed Rossi captains remained stationed outside the archway, their hands resting loosely near the lapels of their jackets.

Dominic’s presence immediately eclipsed everything else in the room. The opulent salon suddenly felt smaller, the air growing thick with authority and quiet menace.

His midnight-blue eyes swept across the room, ignoring Julian completely, and landed squarely on Sofia.

The moment he saw her in the white lace gown, Dominic stopped dead in his tracks.

Sofia watched his throat work as he swallowed, his jaw tightening into rigid stone. For five suffocating seconds, nobody in the atelier dared to breathe. Dominic’s gaze trailed from the veil crowning her hair, down the delicate curve of her bare shoulders, to the sapphire pendant resting against the ivory lace, before rising to lock onto her eyes.

In that single, unshielded look, Sofia saw the absolute ruin of a man. It was the look of a king watching his kingdom burn to the ground, helpless to stop the flames because he had struck the match himself.

“Don Rossi,” Julian said, stepping forward with an outstretched hand, breaking the agonizing silence. “We were just discussing the cathedral timeline.”

Dominic slowly turned his gaze toward Julian. He did not take the offered hand. His eyes were so cold and devoid of warmth that Julian’s hand awkwardly dropped back to his side.

“The cathedral is secured,” Dominic said, his baritone voice smooth, low, and terrifyingly flat. “Eight squads of Rossi enforcers will control every entrance and perimeter checkpoint. The guest list has been vetted. If anyone steps out of line, they will not leave the cathedral alive.”

Julian swallowed visibly, forcing a light chuckle. “A bit excessive for a society wedding, don’t you think? St. Jude’s is in the safe zone.”

“There are no safe zones in my city,” Dominic countered, his voice cutting like a razor. “Only places I permit to stand.”

Dominic walked toward the podium, stepping up onto the first tier. The seamstresses scurried back into the corners like frightened mice. He reached out with his right hand—his left remained cleanly bandaged in white—and lifted a fold of the translucent lace veil.

His fingers brushed Sofia’s cheek, the warmth of his skin sending a familiar, electric shudder straight to her core.

“Are you happy, Sofia?” he murmured, his voice so quiet it was intended only for her ears.

Sofia looked into those deep, tortured blue eyes, feeling her heart fracture into a thousand pieces. She wanted to scream. She wanted to tear off the veil, throw her arms around his neck, and beg him to take her away from this farce. But the specter of their shared bloodline stood between them like an iron guillotine.

“I am ready,” she whispered back, her voice barely audible.

Dominic stared at her for another heartbeat, his thumb tracing the sharp line of her jaw with infinite tenderness before he dropped the veil back into place.

“Good,” he said coldly, stepping down from the podium. “Then let us finish this.”

Without another word, Dominic turned and strode out of the salon, his dark coat sweeping behind him as his guards fell in step.

Across the cobblestone avenue, parked in the shadow of an ancient stone archway, sat a tinted black Bentley.

Inside the rear passenger cabin, Vivian Vance leaned back against the quilted red leather, a crystal glass of gin in one hand and a thick crimson envelope in the other. Her platinum blonde bob was styled to perfection, her crimson lips curled into a venomous, triumphant sneer.

Beside her sat Victor Vance, her older brother and the current operational commander of the Vance Cartel’s mercenary wings.

“Are the men in position?” Vivian asked, her voice dripping with malice.

“Eight tactical operators with suppressed rifles,” Victor replied, checking the digital feed on his encrypted tablet. “They will infiltrate St. Jude’s service tunnels through the crypt entrance twenty minutes before the ceremony begins. No one from Rossi’s perimeter will spot them.”

Vivian opened the crimson envelope and pulled out a four-page document stamped with the gold seal of the Geneva Institute of Forensic Genetics.

Her eyes gleamed with dark euphoria as she re-read the bold, capitalized conclusion:

**SAMPLE A (ROSSI LINEAGE REFERENCE) AND SAMPLE B (SOFIA UNKNOWN): 0.00% PROBABILITY OF MATERNAL OR PATERNAL KINSHIP. ZERO SHARED CHROMOSOMAL MARKERS. NO GENETIC RELATIONSHIP DETECTED.**

“For two years, Dominic cast me aside for this little orphan beggar,” Vivian hissed, her fingers gripping the paper so tightly it crumpled at the edges. “He broke our alliance. He disgraced the Vance name in front of the entire High Table, treating that pathetic girl like a sacred holy relic just because of an old trinket around her neck.”

Vivian took a sip of her gin, her cold gray eyes flashing with sadistic anticipation.

“Tomorrow, in front of four hundred guests, in front of the entire syndicate council and every cardinal in the diocese, I will tear her veil off. I will show the entire city that Don Dominic Rossi has been worshiping a fraud.”

Victor smirked. “And Julian Bennett?”

“Julian is a coward who only cares about clearing his gambling debts,” Vivian scoffed. “He knows his role. The moment the gunfire starts, he will back down. And Sofia… Sofia will leave that cathedral in a body bag, while Dominic Rossi watches his precious empire drown in disgrace.”

Vivian tapped the glass against the window, watching Sofia emerge from the salon across the street, surrounded by Rossi guards.

“Enjoy your white dress, Sofia,” Vivian whispered into the dark car. “It will make a wonderful shroud.”
