Chapter 6: The Road Beyond

Endless Desire on the Midnight Highway 6 of 6

Three weeks later.

The morning sunlight streamed through the tall mahogany windows of the King County Superior Courthouse in Seattle, illuminating the polished marble floors.

Elena sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in an elegant ivory pantsuit. Across the aisle, Harold’s high-priced legal defense team sat in grim silence. Harold himself was not present; he was currently being held without bail in a federal detention facility facing twenty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, attempted premeditated murder, and the reopened homicide investigation into his first wife’s fatal crash.

The judge adjusted his glasses, reviewing the thick stack of signed decrees before bringing the heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing strike.

“In light of uncontested evidence of fraudulent coercion, financial duress, and criminal conspiracy, the marriage between Harold Brooks and Elena Brooks is hereby declared null and void ab initio,” the judge pronounced. “Furthermore, under the terms of the federal restitution settlement, all unencumbered assets of the Brooks Family Real Estate Trust—totaling forty-two million dollars—are hereby transferred unconditionally to Ms. Elena Brooks.”

Elena let out a long, quiet breath that she felt like she had been holding for two lifetimes.

She picked up the silver fountain pen, signed her maiden name on the final line of the annulment decree, and walked out of the courtroom.

Outside, the Seattle sky was a flawless canopy of sapphire blue. The warm June breeze carried the scent of saltwater and cedar from Puget Sound. As Elena walked down the wide granite steps, camera flashes went off from reporters eager to cover the collapse of the Brooks empire, but Elena paid them no mind. She slipped into a waiting black town car, closed the door on her past, and headed south along the coastal highway.

An hour later, the town car pulled up to the scenic overlook near Cape Lookout.

Perched on the cliffside overlooking the endless, glittering expanse of the Pacific Ocean was a vintage cherry-red 1968 Ford Mustang convertible, its top down and chrome gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Leaning against the driver’s door, with his sunglasses pushed up into his dark hair, was Julian.

When he saw her approaching, a genuine, warm smile broke across his face—free of the anger, the tension, and the cynicism that had shadowed him for a decade.

“I hear congratulations are in order, Ms. Brooks,” Julian said, his slate-gray eyes sparkling with affectionate humor. “Or should I say… free woman?”

“Just Elena,” she replied with a laugh, stepping close to him.

Julian reached into his pocket and tossed a set of silver keys into her hand.

“What’s this?” Elena asked, looking down at the keys.

“The road trip we actually deserved,” Julian said softly. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them, and placed his hands gently on her waist. “No lies. No locked briefcases. No backseat secrets. Just you, me, and anywhere you want to go.”

Elena looked up into his handsome face, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against her palms. The dark highway of fear was behind them; only the infinite horizon lay ahead.

“Then what are we waiting for?” Elena smiled, stepping into the driver’s seat.

Julian climbed into the passenger side with a grin. As the V8 engine roared to life with a deep, throaty rumble, they pulled out onto the open coastal highway, leaving the shadows behind and driving straight into the golden sunlight.
