Chapter 3: The Dangerous Alliance
Elena’s heart surged into her throat. She instinctively shoved the insurance documents behind her back, her knuckles turning white as she pressed herself against the edge of the dresser.
The silhouette stepped forward out of the shadows. It wasn’t Harold.
It was Julian.
He stood in the doorway, barefoot and drenched from hauling the luggage, wearing a fitted black t-shirt that showed the taut muscles of his arms and chest. He reached behind him and clicked the adjoining door shut, turning the deadbolt with a soft, decisive snap.
“Don’t bother hiding them,” Julian said quietly, his deep voice cutting through the drumming rain on the window. “I already know what’s inside that briefcase.”
Elena stared at him, her eyes wide with shock and distrust. “You… you knew?”
Julian stepped closer, his heavy footsteps soundless on the faded carpet. He reached out and gently plucked the trembling papers from her hand. He didn’t even glance at them, tossing them casually onto the bed.
“Ten years ago, my mother died in a single-car rollover on Highway 26,” Julian said, his slate-gray eyes darkening with simmering fury. “Harold collected twelve million dollars in life insurance, paid off his early debts, and built the foundation of Brooks Holdings. When he pulled me out of the academy two weeks ago and insisted on this ‘family road trip’ through the mountain pass, I knew the monster was hungry again.”
Elena felt dizzy. “Then why did you get in the car? Why did you touch me in the backseat?”
Julian stopped mere inches from her. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating, filling the cramped motel room. He reached up, his rough, warm fingertips lightly brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“Because I needed to know whose side you were on,” Julian whispered, his gaze dropping to her parted lips before rising back to her eyes. “I thought you were his accomplice—another gold digger waiting for a payout. But the moment you touched my hand in the dark… I felt how terrified you were of him. You’re just another prisoner in his cage.”
Elena looked up into his fierce, unyielding gaze, the suffocating isolation of the last two years finally fracturing. “He’s going to kill us, Julian. The brakes on the Escalade… they’ve been tampered with.”
“Not if we take him down first,” Julian murmured.
He pulled a black encrypted smartphone from his pocket and unlocked the screen. Displayed on the display was a real-time tracking interface connected to the Oregon State Police Department.
“I’ve been working with Detective Marcus Vance for the past six months,” Julian said, his fingers lightly gripping Elena’s waist, grounding her trembling body. “The feds have an open racketeering and securities fraud case against Harold. But to nail him for attempted murder, we need him to commit to the act on Dead Man’s Curve. The state troopers will have a roadblock waiting at Mile Marker 42.”
“And if the brakes fail before we reach them?” Elena asked, her voice shaking.
“I’m driving once we hit the pass,” Julian promised, his hand sliding up to cup the back of her neck, pulling her forehead gently against his chest. “I swear on my mother’s grave, Elena, Harold will never lay a hand on you again. We walk out of this mountain together.”
For the first time in two years, Elena felt safe. She clutched the fabric of Julian’s shirt, nodding with fierce determination.
Suddenly, the front door handle jiggled violently from the outside. Heavy boots scraped against the porch timber.
Harold was back.
