Chapter 5: Unmasking the Patriarch

Endless Desire on the Midnight Highway 5 of 6

The black barrel of the revolver remained steady between Harold’s white-knuckled fingers. Through the haze of deployed airbag powder, Elena looked directly into the eyes of the man who had bought her life, controlled her body, and plotted her murder.

For two years, she had flinched at the sound of his footsteps. But now, staring down the barrel of his gun, Elena felt no fear—only cold, crystalline clarity.

“Shoot then, Harold,” Elena said softly, her voice steady and unyielding. “Because that’s the only way you’ll stop the truth from coming out.”

“Shut up!” Harold roared, his finger tightening on the trigger. “You were nothing before I found you! A penniless orphan begging for hospital charity! I gave you everything!”

“You gave me a cage,” Elena replied coldly. “And a funeral ticket.”

Before Harold could pull the trigger, a blinding array of two-million-candlepower halogen spotlights exploded through the morning fog, bathing the wrecked SUV in incandescent white light.

The deafening wail of police sirens echoed against the canyon walls as four heavy-duty State Police cruisers and two black tactical SUVs roared around the bend, boxing the Cadillac against the embankment.

“Harold Brooks! Drop the weapon and put your hands outside the vehicle immediately!” a booming voice bellowed through a loudspeaker.

Harold’s eyes darted frantically toward the flashing red and blue lights. In that split second of panic and hesitation, Julian struck.

With lightning speed, Julian’s palm hammered upward into Harold’s right wrist, forcing the revolver toward the shattered sunroof. The gun discharged with a sharp crack, blowing a hole through the panoramic glass. Julian twisted the weapon from Harold’s grip, tossed it out the broken window, and pinned Harold’s arms behind his back against the steering wheel.

Tactical officers in full body armor swarmed the vehicle, ripping the driver’s door open and hauling a screaming, thrashing Harold out onto the wet asphalt.

“Do you know who I am?!” Harold shrieked as he was forced to his knees in the mud. “I own the district attorney! I know the governor! You will all lose your badges for this!”

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped through the flashing lights. It was Detective Marcus Vance. He showed his federal task force badge, looking down at Harold with utter disgust.

“You’re not calling anyone, Brooks,” Detective Vance said. “We’ve had federal warrants on your shell corporations since yesterday. And thanks to your son, we have audio recordings of your mechanic confessing to brake sabotage for five hundred thousand dollars in cash.”

Elena stepped out of the rear door, stepping over the shattered safety glass. In her hands, she carried Harold’s opened leather briefcase.

She walked up to Harold, who was kneeling in the mud, his thousand-dollar suit ruined, his silver hair plastered to his bleeding forehead.

Elena dropped the two $25-million life insurance policies onto the wet asphalt right in front of his face.

“Your mother’s death was ruled an accident ten years ago, Harold,” Elena said, her voice carrying over the sound of the ocean wind. “Julian and I made sure ours never will be.”

Harold looked up at her, trembling with rage and humiliation. “Elena… please… think of our marriage… think of the estate…”

“There is no marriage, Harold,” Elena whispered, looking at him as if he were nothing more than dirt beneath her boots. “You’re not a patriarch. You’re just a cowardly murderer who ran out of luck.”

Detective Vance nodded to the state troopers. “Take him away.”

As Harold was shoved into the back of the police cruiser, screaming curses into the rain, Julian walked up beside Elena. He took off his dry jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Elena looked up at him, her eyes bright with tears of profound relief, and for the first time in years, she smiled.
