Volume 1 Chapter 2: The Dominant CEO in the Corner Office

The New CEO Turns Out to Be My Gynecologist 2 of 3

Monday morning arrived with the harsh, merciless glare of overcast city skies.

Inside the 14th-floor offices of Apex Design Studio, the atmosphere was thick with frantic energy. Telephones chimed relentlessly across open-plan workspaces, coffee machines hummed without pause, and groups of senior architects huddled around digital blueprints, their hushed whispers carrying an unmistakable note of panic.

Evelyn Thorne sat at her executive desk, dressed in her signature corporate armor—an immaculate ivory silk blouse, a high-waisted navy pencil skirt, and her dark chestnut hair pulled into a flawless, tight bun. On the surface, she was the picture of pristine professional composure. But beneath her desk, her hands were tightly clenched in her lap, and her abdomen ached with a dull, persistent tightness born of a weekend spent crying in a cramped boutique hotel room.

She had spent forty-eight hours trying to compartmentalize the destruction of her three-year marriage. She had scrubbed Richard’s parting sneers from her mind, focusing entirely on her upcoming architectural bid for the city’s coastal revitalization project. Her career was the only thing she had left—the sole pillar of her life that Richard couldn’t claim or corrupt.

A loud, double-chime echoed over the building’s public address system.

“All senior department heads and creative directors, report to the Main Auditorium on Level 3 immediately,” the automated voice announced. “All operations are temporarily suspended pending an urgent executive briefing.”

Across the open floor, Evelyn’s junior designer, Marcus, popped his head over the partition wall, his face pale. “Evelyn, did you hear? The board called an emergency assembly. Word on the wire is that a hostile takeover cleared over the weekend. Apex didn’t just get acquired—we were bought out entirely.”

Evelyn’s stomach plummeted. “Bought out? By whom?”

“No one knows,” Marcus whispered nervously. “Some mega-conglomerate out of the capital. They bought up eighty-five percent of our parent company’s voting shares before the market opened at eight this morning. Every contract in the building is under immediate audit.”

Evelyn stood up, smoothing down her navy skirt. A cold prickle of apprehension settled between her shoulders. An audit meant every pending design project, including her coastal bid, was frozen.

Suppressing the flare of abdominal pain that accompanied her anxiety, she gathered her encrypted digital pad and joined the stream of anxious executives heading down the glass elevators toward the Grand Auditorium.

***

The auditorium of Vance Global HQ—which connected to Apex’s office tower via a covered skybridge—was a masterpiece of clinical modernism. Tiered rows of dark oak seating sloped down toward a gleaming white marble stage, illuminated by harsh overhead spotlights. Hundreds of designers, project managers, and external subcontractors filled the auditorium, their overlapping voices creating a deafening hum of unrest.

Evelyn found a seat near the middle tier, smoothing her skirt as she sat down.

“I’m telling you, it’s a done deal!” a loud, arrogant voice boomed three rows ahead of her.

Evelyn stiffened. She recognized that voice instantly.

Richard Sterling was standing in the aisle, dressed in a flashy double-breasted designer suit, gesturing grandly to a group of nervous real estate investors. His slicked-back hair gleamed under the stage lights.

“Sterling Real Estate has already secured priority vetting for the new parent company’s commercial subcontracts,” Richard bragged, his voice carrying clearly over the crowd. “Whoever this new CEO is, he’s going to need local infrastructure partners. And once he sees our proposal, Sterling Developments will be holding the keys to the entire district. My ex-wife works here, you know—she’s just a senior grunt, but I know how these corporate buyouts work.”

Evelyn felt a surge of cold fury tighten her throat. Richard was already parlaying her workplace into his personal networking playground, oblivious to the fact that his presence turned her stomach. She forced her eyes away, staring straight ahead at the empty stage, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the side of the stage swung open.

Four armed private security guards in charcoal suits stepped out, taking positions along the perimeter of the stage. The murmuring in the auditorium died down instantly, replaced by a suffocating, expectant silence.

A single figure walked out from the wings and stepped up to the acrylic podium.

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her chest. Her heart slammed against her ribs with such violence it felt physical.

The incoming Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Conglomerate was broad-shouldered, standing six-foot-two in a bespoke Italian charcoal suit that accentuated his powerful, athletic frame. A dark silk tie was pulled tight against his crisp white collar. Under the sharp glare of the stage spotlights, his silver rimless glasses glinted with icy brilliance, framing dark steel-blue eyes that swept across the auditorium like a blade.

It was Dr. Ethan Vance.

*The specialist from Suite 701.*

The man who had held her trembling body against the exam table forty-eight hours ago. The man who had placed his warm, gloved hand over her bare abdomen, commanding her breathing while probing her most intimate physical vulnerabilities.

Evelyn felt the room tilt around her. Cold sweat broke out along her neck. Her fingers clutched her digital pad so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white.

*He isn’t just a physician,* her mind screamed in sheer, unadulterated panic. *He’s the sovereign head of Vance Global.*

Ethan adjusted his silver glasses with a single, deliberate movement of his forefinger. When he spoke, his low, resonant baritone filled the cavernous auditorium through the surround-sound speakers, commanding immediate, absolute submission.

“Good morning,” Ethan said, his tone icy, precise, and entirely devoid of warmth. “As of six o’clock this morning, Vance Global Conglomerate has acquired one hundred percent of Apex Design Studio and its subsidiary assets. Effective immediately, all previous executive board mandates are nullified.”

A collective gasp rippled through the audience, but Ethan didn’t pause for a fraction of a second.

“We do not tolerate inefficiency, incompetence, or structural rot,” Ethan continued, his steel-blue eyes cutting through the air. “Over the next seventy-two hours, every department, every project proposal, and every external subcontract will undergo rigorous evaluation under my direct supervision. Those who meet Vance Global’s standards will be retained. Those who do not will be purged.”

Three rows down, Richard Sterling’s arrogant smile froze. He cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his silk tie as if suddenly sensing the razor-thin margin of his ambitions.

“That is all,” Ethan concluded coldly.

He didn’t wait for applause. He turned away from the podium, his long strides taking him back toward the stage exit. But just before he stepped into the shadows of the wings, Ethan stopped.

Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head. Across the crowded, tiered auditorium—spanning hundreds of seated employees—his steel-blue gaze locked directly onto Evelyn.

The connection was absolute. For three agonizing, heavy seconds, Ethan held her locked in his sights. His eyes narrowed slightly, sweeping over her pale face, her trembling shoulders, and her tight navy skirt, before he turned and vanished behind the heavy stage doors.

Evelyn sat paralyzed, her chest heaving as if she had just run a marathon.

***

The auditorium erupted into chaotic noise as employees scrambled to reach the exits, terrified for their jobs.

Evelyn stood up on unsteady legs, her mind reeling, her lower abdomen pulsing with a fresh wave of stress-induced spasms. She needed to reach her desk, gather her personal belongings, and write her letter of resignation immediately. There was no way she could remain at Apex Design Studio. How could she work under a man who had seen her at her most physically vulnerable, who knew her medical secrets and her marital shame?

“Evelyn!”

A sharp hand grabbed her elbow in the crowded aisle. Evelyn spun around to find Richard standing over her, his expression a mix of frustration and frantic ambition.

“Did you see him?” Richard hissed, his eyes wide. “That was Ethan Vance! The heir to the Vance Conglomerate empire! Evelyn, you work in the creative department—you have to get me a face-to-face meeting with his executive team before the subcontract audit closes!”

Evelyn looked at her ex-husband, a sudden, incredulous laugh threatening to spill from her lips. “Touch me again, Richard, and I will have security remove you from the building.”

Richard’s face darkened, his grip tightening on her arm. “Don’t play high-and-mighty with me! You owe me, Evelyn. After the humiliation you put me through on Friday—”

“Mrs. Thorne.”

A smooth, emotionless voice interrupted them.

Standing in the aisle behind Richard was a middle-aged man in a severe black suit, holding a sleek silver tablet. It was Ethan Vance’s chief executive assistant.

Richard instantly let go of Evelyn’s arm, snapping into a wide, desperate smile. “Ah! Good morning, sir! I am Richard Sterling, Managing Partner at Sterling Developments. I was just—”

The assistant didn’t even acknowledge Richard’s existence. He stepped past him as if he were invisible, stopping directly in front of Evelyn.

“Mrs. Thorne,” the assistant said respectfully, presenting a heavy, dark-tinted glass security pass. “Mr. Vance requires your presence in the executive penthouse suite on the 80th floor immediately.”

Richard’s mouth dropped open in shock. “What? Why does Mr. Vance want to see *her*?”

The assistant turned a cold glance toward Richard. “Security has been instructed to clear Level 3 of non-cleared visitors. Mr. Sterling, if you do not vacate the premises within two minutes, your firm will be permanently blacklisted from all future bidding.”

Richard turned pale, stepping backward in frantic retreat. He shot Evelyn a look of bewildered, terrified envy before turning on his heel and hurrying toward the exit gates.

Evelyn looked down at the heavy glass security pass in her palm. The digital surface flickered with her encrypted employee ID and a single red directive: *[LEVEL 80 – MANDATORY APPOINTMENT]*.

Her pulse throbbed wildly against her wrist. She looked at the assistant. “Is this regarding the studio’s architectural bid?”

“Mr. Vance does not share his directives with me, Mrs. Thorne,” the assistant replied crisply. “The executive elevator is waiting.”

***

The private biometric elevator ascended the 80 floor tower in total, suffocating silence.

The digital floor indicator counted up rapidly—*40… 60… 75… 80.* With a soft, hydraulic hiss, the polished silver doors slid open, revealing the executive penthouse of Vance Global Conglomerate.

The suite was vast, sleek, and terrifyingly silent. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the storm-cloud-draped city skyline. Deep leather armchairs rested on dark marble floors, and at the far end of the room sat a massive executive desk crafted from solid, polished obsidian.

Ethan Vance stood by the panoramic window, his back to the entrance. He had already discarded his suit jacket, draped casually over the back of an armchair. His dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the dark fabric clinging tightly to his broad shoulders, and his dark silk tie was loosened slightly.

The heavy double obsidian doors behind Evelyn closed automatically, sealing shut with a sharp, electronic *chime* that sounded ominously like a lock engaging.

Evelyn stood frozen near the entrance, clutching her digital pad against her chest like a shield. “Mr. Vance.”

Ethan did not turn around immediately. He unbuttoned the silver cuffs of his dress shirt, folding the dark fabric twice up his forearms to reveal lean, corded muscle and a heavy luxury wristwatch.

“In my medical suite, you called me Dr. Vance,” Ethan said, his low baritone cutting through the quiet space. He slowly turned to face her, adjusting his silver rimless glasses. “In my corporate office, you call me Mr. Vance. Tell me, Evelyn… which authority are you more afraid of?”

Evelyn swallowed hard, forcing her spine straight despite the tremor in her knees. “I came to deliver my formal resignation, sir. Given the conflict of interest regarding my medical care and your acquisition of Apex Design, I believe it is best if I vacate my position immediately.”

Ethan pushed off the glass window. He began to walk toward her, his movements slow, deliberate, and possessing a terrifying, predatory grace.

“Resignation?” Ethan murmured, stopping three feet in front of her. The sheer physical height of the man forced Evelyn to tilt her head up to meet his gaze. “You think you can resign from me?”

“I am an employee of Apex, Mr. Vance,” Evelyn said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts. “I have the right to terminate my contract—”

“Your contract with Apex belongs to Vance Global now,” Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into that quiet, dangerous register she recognized from the exam room. “And your body belongs under my care until your pelvic hypertonia is fully rehabilitated.”

Before she could step back, Ethan advanced. He stepped into her personal space, forcing her to retreat until the back of her legs struck the solid, cool edge of his obsidian desk.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. She was trapped. Ethan leaned forward, placing his broad hands on the edge of the desk on either side of her hips, effectively boxing her in within his personal perimeter.

The heat radiating from his body was suffocating. Up close, she could smell the clean, intoxicating scent of cedarwood, amber, and skin. His steel-blue eyes locked onto hers with a possessive intensity that rendered her completely breathless.

“Do you really think I spent forty-eight hours reviewing your design patents and medical records just to let you walk away to another firm?” Ethan whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear.

Evelyn’s pulse throbbed violently against her collarbone. She clutched the edge of the desk behind her. “Ethan… please. This is highly unprofessional—”

“Unprofessional?” Ethan let out a low, raspy chuckle that sent a shiver straight down her spine.

Slowly, deliberately, he lifted his right hand. He didn’t touch her skin directly, but his long, calloused forefinger hovered a millimeter above the pulse point at her left wrist, feeling the feverish heat radiating from her skin.

“Your heart rate is one hundred and twelve beats per minute, Ms. Thorne,” Ethan murmured, his breath brushing against the shell of her ear. “Your abdominal muscles are locked in a acute stress spasm right now. You are terrified, mortified, and physically overwhelmed.”

Evelyn closed her eyes, her lower lip trembling. “Then let me go.”

“Never,” Ethan declared, his voice dropping into an unyielding, possessive command that left no room for resistance. He leaned closer, his broad chest almost touching her shoulder. “You will not resign. You will lead the coastal architectural project under my direct command. And tonight at seven-thirty, when the office clears, you will report to my private suite for your second therapy session.”

Evelyn snapped her eyes open, staring into his steel-blue gaze. “And if I refuse?”

Ethan’s thumb finally made contact with her skin, pressing lightly, deliberately over her hammering radial pulse. The touch was warm, precise, and searing.

“You won’t refuse,” Ethan whispered, his silver glasses catching the light. “Because if you walk out that door, I will crush Richard Sterling’s firm into bankruptcy before sunset… and I will take absolute control of your life anyway.”
