Chapter 6: The True Mistress of Round Hill
The heavy mahogany double doors of the Grand Drawing Room were closed tight against the chaotic aftermath of the gala. Outside, the violent storm clouds were finally breaking apart, revealing a deep indigo pre-dawn sky over Round Hill.
A warm fire crackled steadily in the massive French marble hearth, casting soft amber embers across the intricate patterns of the Persian wool rug.
Ethan led Sarah to the deep velvet sofa, sitting intimately beside her. For the first time since Claire’s death, his unyielding corporate armor was completely gone. His tuxedo bow tie hung unknotted around his neck, his collar was open, and his slate-blue eyes were filled with raw, overwhelming vulnerability.
Ethan gently took Sarah’s left hand. With trembling, reverent care, he unbuttoned her linen cuff and slowly unwrapped the layers of medical gauze.
The raw, healing triangular imprint of the Rowenta steam iron lay exposed against her pale skin.
Ethan’s breath hitched sharply. His throat tightened with an agonizing mixture of overwhelming grief, awe, and deep remorse. “You stood in the fire for my son while I was blind,” he whispered, his deep voice breaking. “You took the blow meant to destroy my life, and you carried the pain alone so you wouldn’t be taken from him.”
Ethan reached for a fresh jar of soothing calendula burn salve resting on the side table. With infinite gentleness, he applied the cool ointment across her scar with his fingertips, his touch feather-light.
He lowered his head, pressing a warm, lingering, and exquisitely tender kiss directly to the unburned edge of the skin near her wrist.
Sarah felt a warm tear drop against her arm. She reached out with her right hand, gently stroking the silver-frosted hair at his temple. Beneath her fingertips, she felt the last icy barricades around Ethan’s heart dissolve into pure, unconditional trust.
Ethan rose slowly and walked to his massive mahogany desk. He returned carrying a heavy, leather-bound legal folio, placing it gently into Sarah’s lap.
The folio contained the Vance Family Trust Charter & Guardianship Decree, drafted and executed overnight by Ethan’s senior legal counsel.
Ethan knelt before her, looking up into her eyes. “These clauses appoint you as the permanent legal co-guardian of Leo Vance, with irrevocable parental rights and executive veto authority over the estate. It also names you President of the newly endowed Vance-Jenkins Pediatric Foundation, with an initial one-hundred-million-dollar allocation.”
Sarah stared at the embossed gold seal, her hazel eyes wide with disbelief. “Ethan… I never asked for money or legal power. I came here to work, and I stayed because I love Leo with all my heart.”
Ethan smiled—a radiant, genuine smile that entirely transformed the hard lines of his face. “I know, Sarah. That is exactly why you are the only person in the world I trust with my son, and with my life. You are not an employee in this house. You never will be again. You are our family.”
Together, Ethan and Sarah walked up the grand staircase to the second-floor nursery.
Glorious, golden autumn sunlight flooded through the tall bay windows, banishing every lingering shadow of Victoria’s deceit. In his hand-carved white oak crib, baby Leo woke up, kicking his chubby legs happily in his soft sleep sack. Seeing Sarah and Ethan standing side-by-side, Leo let out a bright, gurgling coo and reached out his arms.
Sarah lifted Leo into her embrace, pressing her cheek against his soft, dark baby curls. Leo giggled joyfully, his small hand instantly tangling in Sarah’s hair. Ethan wrapped his strong arms around both Sarah and Leo, burying his face against Sarah’s temple as Leo babbles happily, reaching out to touch his father’s cheek.
Ethan opened the tall French doors, and the three of them stepped out onto the expansive limestone terrace atop Round Hill.
The crisp morning air carried the scent of pine, damp earth, and distant coastal salt. Below them, the sprawling eighteen-acre estate glowed in rich shades of gold, amber, and crimson. On the horizon, the waters of Long Island Sound shimmered like liquid gold beneath the rising sun.
Leo, cradled securely between them, reached his little hands out—grasping Sarah’s index finger with his left hand and Ethan’s index finger with his right. With baby strength, he pulled their hands together until Ethan’s warm, strong fingers interlocked completely with Sarah’s.
Ethan turned to Sarah, his slate-blue eyes shining with absolute, profound devotion. “Vance Manor was a gilded tomb when you walked through the gates. You gave my son his life, and you gave me back my soul. Stay with us, Sarah. Be Leo’s mother, and be my wife.”
Sarah smiled through happy, shining tears. She tightened her grip on Ethan’s hand, leaning her head against his broad shoulder as the golden New England sunrise enveloped them. “I’m never leaving, Ethan. We’re home.”
Three hands locked together over the horizon—a family born not from pedigree, but from love, sacrifice, and unyielding truth.
