Chapter 2: Poison in the Nursery

The Maid Who Saved the Billionaire’s Heir 2 of 6

Sarah locked the frosted glass door of the lower-ground staff dispensary, the heavy deadbolt sliding home with a reassuring metallic click. Outside the high basement transom windows, autumn rain began to patter against the limestone foundation of Vance Manor.

She peeled off her charcoal linen jacket. The fabric stuck agonizingly to the raw, fluid-filled blisters across her left forearm, tracing the exact triangular shape of the Rowenta soleplate. The tearing sensation sent a searing, throbbing ache radiating all the way to her shoulder. It was a severe second-degree burn. Sarah bit her lower lip until she tasted the sharp metallic tang of copper, refusing to make a sound that might alert the other house staff walking the corridors.

Moving with steady, clinical precision honed from years of pediatric certifications, Sarah opened the stainless-steel medical cabinet. She irrigated the raw wound with a cold stream of sterile saline, gritting her teeth against the violent sting. Using a tongue depressor, she applied a thick, cooling layer of silver sulfadiazine ointment across the ruined skin. She wrapped the arm tightly in a sterile non-stick pad and tubular gauze, pinning it snugly so it sat flush and undetectable under her long linen sleeve.

She pulled her late father’s silver pocket watch from her apron pocket, her thumb tracing the engraved words: Truth and Time. The cool metal grounded her pulse. She reminded herself why she came to Connecticut: to protect the vulnerable, earn an honest living, and stand strong. She buttoned her cream cuff securely over the bandage, smoothing the fabric.

Sarah returned to the second floor, her rubber soles quiet on the runner. In the west-wing nursery, baby Leo was awake in his crib, clutching his soft cashmere giraffe. Sarah checked his breathing rhythm and pupil dilation, scanning for any lingering physical trauma from the morning’s violent incident. He cooed softly, reaching for her.

The heavy oak nursery door swung open. Victoria Sterling glided inside, dressed in a crisp emerald green silk blouse and tailored white trousers. In her right hand, she held a glass eight-ounce baby bottle filled with warm formula.

Victoria smiled, an artificial stretching of her lips. Her tone dripped with venomous, honeyed condescension. “You look remarkably pale, Sarah. I thought I would relieve you of Leo’s midday feeding. In fact, I’ve already spoken with the estate agency—I expect you packed and off Round Hill before dusk.”

Victoria set the warm bottle sharply on the marble preparation counter.

Before Sarah could respond, Victoria’s diamond-encrusted iPhone buzzed violently against the console glass. The caller ID displayed a Cayman Island area code (+1-345) and the stark contact tag: “ORION / L.V.”

Victoria’s face instantly drained of color. Her jaw clenched with panicked fury. She snatched the phone, shot Sarah a lethal glare, and stepped abruptly out onto the stone balcony, slamming the French doors behind her. Through the thick glass, Sarah watched Victoria muttering in panicked, frantic whispers, pacing the wet stone, her hands gesturing sharply as she mouthed the words, “wire transfers… liquidation riders… give me forty-eight hours.”

With Victoria distracted in the rain, Sarah moved immediately to the marble prep counter and lifted the glass bottle.

Her pediatric training instantly flagged the anomalies. The formula possessed an abnormal viscosity, coating the glass too thickly. There was a faint, unnatural pinkish stratification near the base. Sarah unscrewed the silicone nipple and lifted the rim to her nose. A distinct sweet-almond chemical aroma rose from the liquid—concentrated pediatric diphenhydramine and promethazine sedative drops.

Her stomach turned to ice. In an infant of Leo’s weight, this dosage would induce catastrophic respiratory depression within thirty minutes. It would trigger an emergency 911 call, a frantic rush to Greenwich Hospital, and a scenario Victoria could easily blame on Sarah’s “careless overdose.”

Working with silent, lightning speed, Sarah opened the nursery mini-fridge beneath the counter. She retrieved a pre-measured sterile bottle of safe, freshly prepared organic formula and dropped it into the rapid-bath warming unit.

Reaching into the deep pocket of her apron, she pulled out a sterile 50mL screw-top specimen container she had taken from the dispensary kit. She poured the tainted pinkish formula into the plastic vial, twisted the blue cap tight, and slid the evidence deep into her inner uniform pocket. She swiftly rinsed the tainted glass bottle in the sink, filled it with the fresh warm formula, and placed it neatly back on the warmer just as Victoria shoved forcefully through the balcony drapes.

Victoria snapped her phone shut with shaking fingers, her chest heaving. She noticed Sarah standing solidly between the prep counter and the crib.

Victoria extended an open palm, her voice cold and imperious. “Give me the biometric master keycard to the nursery suite. As the future Mrs. Vance, I will determine who enters this room.”

Sarah did not move. Her gaze remained calm, resolute, and completely immovable. “Mr. Vance issued my security credentials under estate protocol. Under his standing written orders, only the CEO can alter nursery clearance. If you wish to revoke my access, Miss Sterling, we will present the matter directly to Mr. Vance when he finishes his afternoon executive review.”

Victoria’s sapphire eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated malice. “You will regret every second you spent in this house.” She spun on her four-inch Louboutin heels and stormed out, her emerald silk rustling furiously down the hallway.

Sarah exhaled a long, shaky breath, cradling her throbbing left forearm against her ribs. She stepped out into the colonnade to ensure the heavy oak door locked securely behind her.

As she turned back toward the stairs, a tall, broad shadow detached itself from behind a fluted limestone archway.

Director of Physical Security Marcus Reed stood before her in his tailored dark suit. The decorated former NYPD Major Case detective scanned her with razor-sharp, veteran intensity, his dark brown eyes missing nothing.

Marcus stepped forward, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that carried the weight of absolute authority. “You’re favoring that left arm, Miss Jenkins. And there’s fresh blood seeping through your cuff. We need to talk about what happened at eleven-fifteen this morning—down in my security room. Now.”

Sarah looked up at the towering security chief, realizing her secret war was no longer hers alone.
