Chapter 1: The Luxury Gala Disgrace

The Hidden Queen: My Husband’s Mistress Ruined My Empire 1 of 12

The Grand Ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was a cathedral of blinding light and hollow opulence.

Heavy crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the gilded ceiling, casting fractured beams of amber across three thousand guests clad in silk and tuxedos. High-society heiresses clinked crystal flutes of vintage champagne, corporate titans traded whispered deals, and press photographers snapped flashes toward the main stage.

Tonight belonged to Carter Luxury Group.

It was the company’s fifth anniversary—a milestone marking its meteoric rise from a bankrupt textile workshop into an international luxury powerhouse valued at over eight hundred million dollars. At the dead center of the ballroom, surrounded by eager journalists and fawning investors, stood Ethan Carter.

Ethan was thirty-two, sharply handsome in a bespoke midnight-blue velvet tuxedo. He held court with the easy arrogance of a man who believed he had conquered the world through sheer genius.

“Ethan, your growth rate over the last three years is unprecedented!” a senior fashion editor purred, leaning forward with her microphone. “To pull off exclusive distribution rights with European silk houses and secure forty billion in capital guarantees… how did a young entrepreneur like you accomplish such a miracle?”

Ethan chuckled smoothly, adjusting his platinum cufflink. “Vision, pure and simple. In business, most people settle for mediocrity. I built Carter Luxury from nothing but grit, foresight, and unyielding ambition.”

Standing twenty feet away, in the shadowed perimeter of the ballroom where the waiters stacked empty trays, Natalie Lin watched him with quiet, unblinking eyes.

*From nothing but grit.*

Natalie’s lips twitched with a ghost of a bitter smile. Ethan had forgotten. Or perhaps he had lied to himself for so long that he genuinely believed his own fairytale.

Five years ago, Ethan Carter was a drowning man. His small leather workshop was weeks away from liquidation, hunted by creditors, sleeping on a cot in a damp basement. It was Natalie—living under the unassuming name Natalie Lin—who had saved him.

To the world, Natalie was an uneducated girl from a provincial family who had married Ethan out of desperate luck. But behind her quiet smile lay a secret that could shake global finance: she was Natalie Sinclair, sole heiress of the Sinclair Financial Group, a banking dynasty whose total assets dwarfed entire sovereign nations.

Out of deep love for Ethan, Natalie had hidden her true identity. She knew his fragile pride could never handle being overshadowed by a woman whose family owned half the commercial ports in Europe. So, she chose to stay in the dark.

For five years, while Ethan slept, Natalie spent her nights secretly authorizing billions in low-interest Sinclair capital injections. She orchestrated secret supply-chain agreements, quietly instructed Sinclair-owned European fashion houses to grant Carter Luxury exclusive brand licenses, and personally edited Ethan’s executive proposals before he presented them to boards.

And during the day? She played the dutiful, humble wife. She cooked three meals a day, ironed his suits, swept the floor of their apartment, and endured the sneers of his wealthy friends who viewed her as a tasteless country bumpkin.

She had given him everything—her wealth, her network, her youth, and her heart.

“Ethan!” a sweet, intoxicating voice cut through the murmur of the crowd.

The circle of reporters parted as Chloe Vance stepped into the spotlight.

Chloe was breathtaking in a custom ruby-red silk gown that clung to every curve of her body like liquid fire. Around her neck sparkled a teardrop diamond necklace worth three million dollars—a necklace Natalie recognized instantly, as it had been charged to Ethan’s corporate card three days prior under *Executive Marketing Expenses*.

Chloe walked straight up to Ethan, wrapping her slender arms around his waist with intimate familiarity. She rested her cheek against his shoulder, looking at the cameras with the radiant confidence of a queen taking her throne.

“You’re far too modest, darling,” Chloe gushed. “Ethan worked eighty hours a week to build this empire. As Vice President of Brand Aesthetics, I’ve seen his dedication firsthand.”

The press flashed their cameras wildly. Whispers swept through the room like wildfire.

Everyone in high society knew the open secret: Ethan Carter had been parading Chloe Vance as his official consort for the past six months. He brought her to international galas, bought her luxury penthouses, and transferred equity shares into her name.

And where was his legal wife?

Natalie stood in her pale beige, off-the-rack dress—a plain outfit she had bought three years ago for eighty dollars. Her long dark hair was tied back in a simple low ponytail. She wore no makeup, no diamonds, no gold. Against the backdrop of glittering socialites, she looked less like the CEO’s wife and more like an underpaid cleaning lady.

A junior reporter, recognizing Natalie from an old wedding photo leaked online years ago, raised his hand hesitantly. “Mr. Carter… tonight is a celebration of family and success. Isn’t Mrs. Natalie Carter here tonight? How does she feel about Carter Luxury’s immense triumph?”

The room fell abruptly silent.

Ethan’s smile faltered before hardening into cold contempt. He cast a careless glance toward the corner where Natalie stood, his eyes filled with naked annoyance.

“Natalie?” Ethan scoffed loudly, not bothering to lower his voice. “She is here, yes. But let’s be realistic. Natalie is a simple, uneducated woman. Her world begins and ends in the kitchen.”

A chorus of muffled titters broke out among the socialites. Chloe smirked, tightening her grip on Ethan’s arm.

“My wife lacks the education, sophistication, and vision required for high society,” Ethan continued, his tone dripping with patronizing disdain. “While Chloe manages our international branding, Natalie spends her days making stew and watching soap operas. She has contributed zero to Carter Luxury. Frankly, her presence here tonight is merely a formality out of my own charity. She is a useless housewife who simply got lucky by marrying me before I hit my stride.”

Reporters chuckled, writing down the quote. Investors nodded in agreement, eyeing Natalie with pity and amusement.

“Look at her dress… is that synthetic polyester?” a woman in emeralds whispered.

“She looks so out of place. If I were Ethan, I would have divorced her years ago.”

Natalie stood rooted to the spot. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t cry. But deep within her chest, the last lingering embers of her five-year love turned into cold, grey ash.

*Useless housewife.*
*Zero contribution.*
*Charity.*

She had poured the blood of the Sinclair dynasty into his veins, and he believed he had grown strong on his own merit.

Seeing Natalie’s silence, Chloe’s eyes gleamed with malicious delight. To Chloe, Natalie was a rat blocking her path to officially becoming Mrs. Carter.

“Darling, let me go say hello to Natalie,” Chloe whispered to Ethan with a false, sweet smile. “After all, she must feel so lonely standing all by herself in the dark.”

“Don’t waste your breath on her, Chloe,” Ethan muttered. “She doesn’t understand our world anyway.”

Chloe picked up a highball glass filled to the brim with 1982 Château Margaux—a rare red wine worth five thousand dollars a bottle—and strolled gracefully toward Natalie.

The crowd instinctively parted, sensing blood in the water. Cameras subtly shifted focus, capturing every step of the confrontation.

Chloe stopped two feet from Natalie. She looked Natalie up and down, her gaze lingering on Natalie’s worn leather pumps.

“Oh, Natalie,” Chloe cooed softly. “You poor thing. Look at you. You look like a maid who stumbled into an opera house by mistake.”

“Chloe,” Natalie replied, her voice smooth and devoid of emotion. “Congratulations on the gala.”

“Congratulations?” Chloe laughed, a sharp, ringing sound. “You should be thanking me! If I hadn’t taken over Ethan’s social schedule, Carter Luxury would still be a pathetic small-town brand. While you were busy scrubbing toilets, I was standing beside Ethan at international summits.”

Natalie looked at Chloe calmly. “The luxury license agreements with the European silk consortium were signed three years ago, Chloe. You joined Ethan six months ago.”

Chloe’s expression darkened instantly. Her eyes flashed with venom.

“Shut your mouth!” Chloe hissed, stepping closer so only Natalie could hear. “Do you really think Ethan cares about facts? He hates you, Natalie. He’s disgusted by your plain face, your cheap clothes, and your boring life. Tonight, after this party, Ethan is announcing our engagement publicly. You are getting thrown out onto the street with nothing.”

Natalie didn’t reply. She merely raised her eyes, looking at Chloe with a terrifying, serene indifference—the look of an empress observing a noisy insect.

That look infuriated Chloe beyond sanity. She wanted tears! She wanted desperation!

“You arrogant little bitch!” Chloe snapped under her breath.

With a sudden movement, Chloe pretended to trip on her high heels. She let out a dramatic gasp: “Oh! My balance!”

As she fell forward slightly, she tilted her glass with full force.

*Splash!*

The deep, dark crimson red wine erupted from the glass, splashing heavily across Natalie’s beige dress, soaking through her cotton bodice, and pouring down onto her light suede pumps. The smell of fermented grapes filled the air.

Natalie didn’t move. The cold, sticky wine seeped through her clothes, staining her chest in a blood-red blotch.

Chloe caught her balance, holding her empty glass. Immediately, she clutched her own chest and burst into loud, theatrical tears.

“My gown! Oh my god, my dress!” Chloe cried out, her voice echoing across the entire ballroom. “Natalie, why did you push me?! This is a one-of-a-kind French haute couture gown! It’s ruined!”

Within seconds, heavy footsteps thundered across the marble floor.

Ethan pushed his way through the crowd, his face pale with rage. He saw Chloe weeping softly, holding a tiny red stain on the hem of her sleeve, and then he saw Natalie standing drenched in wine.

Without asking a single question, Ethan whipped around and pointed a trembling finger directly at Natalie’s face.

“Natalie! Have you lost your mind?!” Ethan roared. “How dare you act out in jealousy on my company’s fifth anniversary?!”

“Ethan…” Natalie started quietly.

“Silence!” Ethan cut her off savagely. “Look at what you’ve done! Chloe spent months organizing this event! She is the face of Carter Luxury, and you attack her out of petty, bitter envy because she is everything you will never be!”

The surrounding guests began to murmur in agreement.

Chloe buried her face in Ethan’s chest, sobbing loudly. “Ethan… she bumped into me on purpose! She said I was a mistress who didn’t deserve to be here… She ruined my night!”

Ethan’s eyes turned cold as ice. He looked at Natalie as if she were a worm beneath his boot. He felt the eyes of three hundred powerful investors and media reporters on him. He needed to show his absolute authority.

“Ethan,” Natalie said, her voice dropping into a deep, icy pitch. “She tripped on her own feet and poured the wine on me. Check the security cameras.”

“Security cameras?!” Ethan spat, laughing harshly. “I don’t need cameras to know your character, Natalie! You’re bitter, pathetic, and desperate for attention! You’ve embarrassed me for the last time.”

Ethan stepped closer, looming over her. “Here is how this ends. You will fix this right now.”

Chloe peeked out from Ethan’s shoulder, a cruel, triumphant smirk gleaming in her eyes. “Ethan is right. Natalie, if you want Ethan to forgive you, you need to show real remorse.”

Chloe stepped forward, pointing down at the floor directly in front of her feet, where a pool of dark red wine lay spattered across the white marble.

“Drop to your knees, Natalie,” Chloe ordered loudly, ensuring every camera and reporter heard her words. “Get down on your knees right now. Use your dress sleeves to wipe this wine off the floor, and apologize to me on your knees in front of everyone! If you do that, maybe I’ll convince Ethan not to throw you out of his house tonight!”

A heavy hush fell over the room. Demanding a legal wife to kneel before her husband’s mistress in front of the city’s elite was the ultimate, irredeemable disgrace.

Reporters held their breath, their fingers hovering over camera shutters.

Ethan took a step forward, glaring down at Natalie with ruthless authority. “You heard her, Natalie. Kneel down. Wipe the floor and beg Chloe for forgiveness. Do it now, or I swear to God, you will leave this hotel tonight with nothing but the clothes on your back!”

Natalie stood completely still amidst the circle of glaring eyes, flashing cameras, and mocking smiles.

She looked at Ethan’s arrogant face. She looked at Chloe’s gloating, triumphant grin.

And then, for the first time in five years, Natalie Sinclair smiled.

It was not a smile of surrender. It was a cold, sharp, terrifying smile that chilled the blood of anyone who caught her eye. The meek, humble housewife was gone. In her place stood a queen who had finally decided to break her silence.

“You want me to kneel?” Natalie murmured softly.

“Yes! Kneel!” Ethan snapped impatiently.

Before Natalie could speak another word, a sudden, violent commotion erupted near the main stage at the front of the ballroom.

*CLANG! BANG!*

A loud metallic crash shattered the atmosphere, followed by screaming attendants and the frantic rushing of security guards. High above the stage, beneath a black silk curtain that had just been pulled back for the night’s exotic luxury demonstration, stood a massive, custom-built three-thousand-gallon glass aquarium—illuminated by glowing blue LED lights.

Inside the shimmering tank, several thick, dark, serpent-like creatures thrashed violently against the glass, their bodies crackling with visible bio-electric arcs.

It was the main spectacle Ethan had imported from South America to impress his billionaire investors: a tank of wild electric eels.

And as the crowd turned in shock toward the stage, Natalie looked back at Ethan and Chloe, her eyes gleaming with dark, absolute vengeance.

“Ethan Carter,” Natalie whispered, her voice cutting through the rising chaos like a honed blade. “Tonight, you will learn the true cost of what you have destroyed.”
