Chapter 5: The Fall of the Vanguard
The sound that emanated from the throat of the Scythe Hive Mother was not sound at all.
It was a psychic-biological shockwave of pure electromagnetic agony, broadcast on an ultra-wide spectrum that tore through physical matter, digital firewalls, and biological nervous tissue alike.
*SKRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEECH!*
The invisible shockwave rippled across the burning skyline of Megacity Aegis-7 in a visible distortion of purple ion haze. As it struck the golden towers of Spire-01, every digital display in the Citadel shattered in a flash of blue sparks. Power grids tripped, holographic banners dissolved into static, and the city’s zero-point geothermal containment shields collapsed in a cascade of blinding power surges.
For the unaugmented Naturals in the lower sectors, the pulse was merely a deafening, disorienting roar that set teeth chattering and rattled inner ears.
But for the Modified elite—whose brains were directly wired into cortical implants, sub-dermal coprocessors, and neural interfaces—the Hive Mother’s scream was an extinction event.
Inside the cockpit of the *Aegis-Paladin Mark-IV Alpha*, Kassius Solari felt as though a white-hot iron spike had been driven directly through the base of his skull into his brainstem.
“AARRRRGGHH!”
Kassius convulsed violently in his pilot harness, blood erupting from his nostrils and spilling down the front of his gold-trimmed tunic. His right cybernetic eye exploded in a tiny shower of internal sparks and boiling glass, blinding him in that socket instantly. The thirty-two neural needle-electrodes plugged into his vertebrae surged with millions of volts of corrupted bio-electric feedback, locking his muscles into rigid, agonizing spasms.
Across the entire battlefield, the scene was identical.
All twelve of the elite Mark-IV Paladin mechs—the invincible pride of the Solari Vanguard—stiffened in mid-stride. Their pearlescent armor plates ceased their elegant harmonic hum. Their glowing golden optical visors flickered once, twice, and died into pitch darkness.
The mechs collapsed forward into the burning rubble of the amphitheater like hollow, lifeless statues of white clay.
**SYSTEM INTEGRITY: CRITICAL FAILURE.**
**AEGIS-MIND LINK: DESTROYED.**
**NEURAL COPROCESSOR: OFFLINE.**
**MANUAL CONTROLS: UNRESPONSIVE.**
Inside the dead cockpits, the cybernetically enhanced pilots lay paralyzed, trapped inside their multi-million-credit machines. Because their mechs were designed entirely around digital neural synchronization, there were no mechanical levers, no manual hydraulic bypasses, and no physical emergency release handles.
Their high-tech cockpits had become high-tech iron coffins.
In the high command redoubt, High Commander Valerius was clutching his black-armored chest as his artificial cardiac regulator sputtered and short-circuited. His mechanical voice synthesizer was locked in a horrifying, looped screech of white noise as he collapsed onto the command console, staring helplessly at the security monitors that were turning to ash.
Down on the floor of the arena, the alien horde surged over the barricades.
Unchecked by plasma fire or missile defenses, thousands of razor-limbed scythe beasts poured across the fallen Paladins. With bone-chilling, methodical brutality, their diamond-hard mandibles began peeling open the pearlescent armor plating of the downed mechs, dragging the screaming, helpless pilots out into the toxic rain.
Kassius clawed desperately at the sealed canopy of the Alpha Paladin, his remaining natural eye wide with sheer, unadulterated terror.
Through the reinforced viewport glass, he could see three massive Hive Vanguard beasts approaching his machine. Each was twice the size of the standard swarm soldiers, their carapaces covered in jagged obsidian spikes and dripping with smoking acid that sizzled against the marble pavement.
The lead beast climbed atop the Alpha Paladin’s chest chassis. Its massive, four-bladed mantis scythe raised high into the air, reflecting the burning ruins of the city in its glossy black edge.
Kassius watched the razor blade descend toward his face, his breath trapped in his throat.
*This is it,* Kassius thought, the icy realization of total, absolute helplessness crashing over him like a tidal wave. *Our perfect algorithms. Our superior modifications. Our invincible technology. It was all a lie.*
He closed his eye, waiting for the cold steel of the alien scythe to punch through the glass and sever his skull.
Then, from five miles away in the deep, dark underbelly of Sector 9, a sound rose above the roar of the burning city.
It was not the sterile, high-pitched electronic hum of a modern plasma turbine.
It was the deep, thunderous, bone-rattling roar of an ancient, unshielded twin-chemical combustion turbine—the sound of forty tons of raw forged iron and brute mechanical horsepower being pushed beyond every safety limit known to man.
*CLANG-THUMP! CLANG-THUMP! CLANG-THUMP!*
The rhythmic, heavy impact of steel-plated footfalls shook the asphalt so hard that pebbles bounced on the pavement around the fallen Paladins.
The Hive Vanguard beast paused its descending strike, its sensory antennae twitching as it turned its eyeless head toward the southern transit perimeter.
A shadow fell over the burning ruins of Spire-01.
From the dark, toxic smoke of the scrap sectors, a giant was coming.
