Chapter 6

If You’re So Smart, Translate It: The Mafia Boss and the Waitress 5 of 5

The cold circular rim of the Tokarev TT-33 muzzle bit hard into Lydia’s left temple. Fifty feet above Berth 3 of the Red Hook Terminals, the catwalk of Gantry Crane 4 swayed in the forty-knot gale. Freezing rain whipped sideways off the black East River, plastering Lydia’s hair to her face. Viktor Volkov held her in an iron Spetsnaz headlock. Her wrists strained against the heavy industrial zip-ties securing her arms behind her back.

Looking straight down through the diamond mesh grating, the black waves of the harbor foamed against the hull of an empty barge. The dizzying swirl of black water and salt spray promised a lethal drop.

Twenty paces away on the wet steel grating, Damon Cross stood with his SIG Sauer lowered at his side. Blood soaked the torn wool of his right thigh. Anton flanked Volkov, covering the gantry walkway with a suppressed submachine gun.

Volkov barked his terms through the wind. Damon must transmit the biometric cryptographic master keys to Red Hook Berths 1 through 6 and sign over Cross Maritime’s deep-water terminal leases, or watch Lydia’s skull perforated and dumped into the bay.

Damon did not hesitate. His untouchable arrogance vanished, replaced by a quiet, terrifying baritone that carried over the storm.

“You take the berths, Viktor. You take the customs codes, the terminals, and every crane from here to Bayonne. Let the girl walk down the ladder.”

Hearing Damon offer his life’s legacy for her life broke the final constraint of Lydia’s paralysis. She refused to be a passive coin traded between kings.

Her bound hands mapped the industrial metal housing mounted to the railing behind her lower back. The rough, flaking rust scraped under her fingernails. Her fingertips recognized the heavy, spring-loaded steel bar: the emergency magnetic manual bypass box for the high-intensity container floodlights. Her father had diagrammed the exact mechanism on his maritime blueprints twenty years ago.

Lydia braced her heels against the steel grating. She threw her entire body weight downward, wrenching her zip-tied wrists upward against the lever with violent leverage.

The heavy magnetic contacts slammed together with a deafening, electric CRACK.

Four 2,500-watt high-pressure sodium industrial arc-lamps mounted directly above the catwalk ignited in an instant. A blinding, sun-white wall of ten thousand lumens flooded the pitch-black catwalk. The buzzing electric heat radiated through the freezing rain.

Having spent an hour with his retinas adjusted to pitch blackness, Volkov screamed. His pupils scorched. He involuntarily threw his right arm up to cover his eyes, his grip on Lydia’s collar slipping.

Anton stumbled backward, firing his automatic weapon blindly into the searing glare.

Damon did not seek cover or raise his weapon. He launched his entire 6’3″ frame through the air, throwing his body completely over Lydia’s. A high-velocity 7.62 round punched directly through his left shoulder blade with a sickening, wet thud.

The kinetic force of the bullet and the tackle slammed them violently into the heavy steel safety net on the catwalk edge. The wind knocked from Damon’s lungs in a wet, ragged gasp. He rolled instantly, pinning Lydia safely beneath his torso.

Drawing his backup subcompact weapon with his uninjured right hand, Damon fired three rapid, point-blank double-taps into Anton’s chest. The kinetic energy snapped Anton backward over the perimeter rail. His body plummeted fifty feet, hitting the black harbor water with a heavy, muffled splash.

Bleeding from a shrapnel tear across his forehead and half-blinded, Volkov heard the screaming sirens of New York Harbor Patrol cutters and a six-SUV Cross tactical convoy sweeping through the terminal gate. He kicked open the emergency maintenance chute and slid down to a waiting 1,200-horsepower offshore speedboat, vanishing into the fog.

The hot, heavy gush of Damon’s arterial blood soaked instantly through his shredded shirt, spreading across Lydia’s bare skin.

Inside the Pier 42 Terminal Control Office, pale gray and cold pink dawn crept over the Lower Manhattan skyline through heavy industrial steel-framed windows.

Lydia knelt on the scuffed linoleum, her emerald dress torn and blood-soaked, her hair wild. She sliced through her plastic zip-ties using a heavy utility knife from the desk, tearing open an Israeli combat dressing.

Damon sat propped against the steel wall, gray-faced from blood loss, his left arm immobilized. His charcoal suit hung in bloody shreds. His skin was clammy, beaded with cold sweat. The warm, thick pulse of dark venous and arterial blood oozed through the sterile gauze. Lydia packed the entry wound with the cotton, pressing down with the full weight of her palms. The excruciating pressure forced a grunt from Damon’s chest, a tendon bulging in his clenched jaw. His obsidian eyes remained fixed on her face.

He raised his right hand, stained with powder residue, rain, and his own blood, and closed his fingers gently around Lydia’s wrist. The touch held zero violence or ownership. It was pure, vulnerable reverence.

“You should have stayed down behind the container, Ms. Hart.”

Lydia met his gaze, wiping a streak of rain and black soot from her cheek with her shoulder.

“And let you bleed out on my watch? That wasn’t in the contract, Mr. Cross.”

A faint shadow of a smile touched Damon’s pale lips. The bitter smell of industrial drip coffee brewing in the office corner clashed with the antiseptic and metallic blood.

The heavy office door groaned open. Arthur Vance limped in, leaning heavily on a carbon-fiber crutch. His right knee was bound in tourniquets. He held up a heavy, ruggedized military satellite phone recovered from Gregory Ward’s impounded vehicle.

“Mr. Cross. Ward is locked in the holding cell downstairs. But we recovered this from his console. It’s an incoming priority override.”

Arthur Vance extends the satellite phone, its military-grade display flickering into focus between Lydia and Damon.

The screen reveals the quiet, dimly lit corridor of the 7th-floor oncology wing at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Standing directly outside Room 714, framed against the frosted observation window, is Viktor Volkov. His cashmere coat is drenched with rain, a dark streak of blood crusted along his temple, his steel-gray hair disheveled. Through the glass behind him, Martha Hart sleeps peacefully beneath her thin hospital blanket, her lavender knit beanie resting on the pillow, completely unaware.

Volkov steps forward until his face fills the camera lens. He raises his right hand, resting his thick, scarred thumb directly against the yellow plastic valve of the wall-mounted medical oxygen regulator feeding Martha’s room.

His razor-thin lips curl into a cold, venomous smile, his voice crackling through the phone’s speaker with icy delight:

“Round one to you, Damon. Let us see how fast your bullet-riddled body can cross the bridge before I disconnect the old woman’s oxygen.”
