Chapter 4

If You’re So Smart, Translate It: The Mafia Boss and the Waitress 3 of 5

Lydia stepped across the polished Carrara marble of the Metropolitan Club on East 60th Street, her stilettos clicking sharply beneath the soaring gilded ceilings. Massive Austrian crystal chandeliers refracted light into thousands of gold facets over three hundred guests in black tie. On an elevated riser, a string quartet played a somber Shostakovich waltz. The low, resonant vibration of the cello hummed up through the soles of her shoes.

She wore a bespoke emerald green backless silk gown. The fabric draped like liquid water, offering zero ballistic protection. Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, exposing her neck. At the base of her spine, just above the curve of her hips, the stiff, prickly bite of medical adhesive tape pulled at the peach fuzz, holding a flat, dime-sized RF transmitter firmly against her skin.

Damon stepped beside her. He wore a bespoke black tuxedo with matte satin lapels, moving with predatory grace. He slid his right hand onto the small of her back. His palm was calloused, broad, and scorching hot against her bare skin above the silk line. His thumb rested less than two inches above the hidden microphone.

Whispers rippled across the ballroom. Wall Street oligarchs and city commissioners froze mid-drink. Damon Cross had not attended a public social function in four years. He arrived with an unknown young woman whose posture held the effortless, sovereign poise of royalty. The intoxicating aroma of vintage gardenia perfume, Cuban cigar smoke, and Damon’s bay rum and cedarwood aftershave enveloped her.

Damon leaned down until his lips brushed the shell of Lydia’s ear. He presented the image of a possessive lover to the observing crowd.

“Port Authority Commissioner Henderson at two o’clock. Port Police Chief at nine. Breathe through your nose, Ms. Hart. If your pulse jumps, they’ll know you’re hunting.”

Lydia tilted her head back slightly, her lips inches from Damon’s jaw, speaking in a quiet, dry murmur.

“Henderson has shifted his weight to his heels four times in thirty seconds, Mr. Cross. His collar is too tight and he hasn’t taken a sip of his Macallan. He isn’t enjoying the music. He’s waiting for a signal.”

Gregory Ward stood across the room, nervously nursing a tumbler of bourbon. Lydia excused herself from Damon’s arm, taking an untouched flute of Dom Pérignon from a passing tray. She slipped toward the grand marble staircase. Her months of carrying trays past hostile tables at The Obsidian took over. She moved with soft, zero-friction steps, blending into the peripheral shadows of the second-floor mezzanine library.

The library swallowed the ballroom noise. Deep Persian wool rugs muffled her footsteps. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves held Gilded Age historical volumes beneath heavy burgundy velvet drapery. She stopped ten paces from a six-foot antique terrestrial brass globe standing in the corner, resting her free hand on the cold brass meridian ring. The icy chill of the metal pressed into her palm. The dry, dusty smell of aged paper and leather bindings mixed with sour tobacco stench.

Behind the globe, Gregory Ward met Anton. Volkov’s scarred chief lieutenant wore an ill-fitting tuxedo that failed to conceal his heavy paramilitary chest. A small banker’s lamp illuminated the jagged shrapnel scar splitting Anton’s right cheek from temple to jawline.

Lydia lowered her eyelashes, filtering out the background laughter and the swelling cello waltz. The crescendo of Shostakovich’s violins reached a sharp, dissonant chord through the floorboards. She focused her auditory cortex on the low, resonant frequencies of Ward’s wheezing voice.

Ward reached inside his tuxedo pocket and passed Anton a heavy, matte-black titanium thumb drive.

“The bypass codes for Crane 4 and the gate relay relays. The Port Authority police units have been rerouted to Bayonne until zero-two-hundred.”

Anton pocketed the drive and stepped closer to Ward. Ward sealed the treason with a command spoken in clipped, gutter-Polish underworld slang.

“Żurawie śpią o północy. Weź dziewczynę, jeśli z nim jest.”

Lydia’s academic training instantly translated the idiom: The cranes sleep at midnight; take the girl if she is with him. Volkov didn’t just want the military cargo at Red Hook. He wanted her.

She turned to re-enter the ballroom. A wide shadow stepped out from behind an arched marble colonnade pillar, cutting off her path. Anton stood in front of her. His dead gray eyes dropped to her throat, clocking her recognition from Table Four.

“Well, look at that. The clever little tea-girl in emerald silk.”

Anton reached a heavy, scarred hand toward Lydia’s bare shoulder. Before his fingers could brush her skin, Damon emerged from the darkness behind the pillar.

Damon stepped between Anton and Lydia, his massive frame blocking Anton’s vision entirely. He did not draw a weapon. He stood in immovable stillness, his voice dropping into a subterranean whisper.

“Touch the fabric of that dress, Anton, and you won’t leave this club in an ambulance. You’ll leave in four separate Hefty bags.”

Anton clocked two Cross tactical guards flanking the terrace exit. He raised his hands slowly, stepping backward into the ballroom crowd. Damon gripped Lydia’s elbow, firm and urgent, guiding her down the private service fire stairs.

They burst into the freezing November night air on 60th Street. The freezing slap of the damp November wind struck Lydia’s exposed back. Arthur idled the matte-black armored Suburban at the curb, tires hissing on wet asphalt. Damon shoved Lydia inside, diving in after her. He slammed the door. The heavy, pneumatic seal locked with an audible thud. Arthur hit the gas, accelerating south toward the Brooklyn waterfront. The violent G-force pressed Lydia back against the leather seat.

Inside the armored SUV roaring across the metal expansion joints of the Manhattan Bridge toward the dark, industrial shoreline of Brooklyn, the blue glow of Lydia’s tablet paints her high cheekbones in cold light.

Her fingers swipe across the screen, parsing the decoded coordinates against Cross Maritime’s real-time harbor telemetry. The hexadecimals blink, then clear into an overhead infrared satellite schematic of Pier 42.

The air leaves her lungs. Her fingers reach out, gripping the thick wool of Damon’s forearm with white-knuckled force. She looks up, her face completely drained of color:

“Damon, they aren’t planning to steal Container 8891. They already moved it yesterday. The coordinates Ward just handed them… it’s an ambush zone set for your arrival at Pier 42.”
